For Young Learners Frog Street Animals Week 2: Zoo Animals Day 4 Literacy Reading with your child: Welcome to Zippity Zoo (Available in Early Literacy Digital Library Books) 1. Open the book and follow: Before you Read on the inside front cover of the book. 2. Read the book with your child. 3. Talk with your child about the story. eStories LIteracy Collection: Hippo Hop Read and sing the online story with your child. Listen and Write: Zebra begins with Z. 1. Say the sentence and have your child repeat with you. 2. Write the sentence. 3. Write Z under the sentence. 4. Have your child look for the letter Z in the sentence. 5. Have your child write the letter Z. 6. Ask him to circle and name any other letters he knows in the sentence. Math Zebra Patterns - Read Welcome to Zippity Zoo. (Available in Early Literacy Digital Library Books) Review pages 6 and 7 that display the giraffes and ze- bras. Discuss the black and white stripes on the zebra. Tell your child that this is a pattern. Encourage him to recreate the zebra using two colors to make a pattern like the one he sees in the book. Invite him to choose any colors he prefers to make the pattern. Moving and Learning Zoo Animal Shadows - Place plastic or wooden zoo animals on the sidewalk next to a piece of white paper positioned so the sun casts a shadow on the paper. Show your child how to trace the shadow of the animal. Help your child label the picture with the zoo animal’s name. If you don’t have animal shapes, draw the outline of your child’s shadow directly on the concrete with chalk. Then let her color in the figure.
