Animal Health Awareness and Chick Distribution Programme organized at Khejuri-II
block of Purba Medinipur in West Bengal under Scheduled Caste Sub Plan
Under Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) scheme, Eastern Regional Station (ERS) of ICAR-
Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Kolkata and Block Livestock Development
Office, Khejuri-II, Purba Medinipur district jointly organized an Animal Health Awareness and
Chick Distribution Programme at the Shyampur village on 3rd
February, 2020.
A total of 55 beneficiaries belonging to scheduled caste community, preferably holding a BPL
card participated in the programme from Shyampur village. Dr. B. Mondal, Principal Scientist,
Dr. G. K. Das, Principal Scientist and Dr. Arun Kumar Das, Senior Scientist from IVRI-ERS
and Dr. Debashis Pramanik, Block Livestock Development Officer and Dr. Parimal Mandal,
Veterinary Officer from Khejuri II block co-ordinated the programme.
The main theme of the awareness programme was to brief about the purpose of SCSP and also
to add the knowledge of scientific rearing of goats, pigs, chicks and quail to the beneficiaries
attended the programme. Awareness programme was initiated with the registration of the
beneficiaries, distribution of folder and medicine kits followed by lectures by the panel of

experts present in the programme. Each folder consisting of 6 leaflets highlighting tips on
scientific goat rearing practices, reproduction, diseases, duck and fish farming etc., 1 booklet
on backyard poultry farming, 4 hand bills narrating vaccination and deworming schedule of
poultry and goats, 2 handbills describing improved variety i.e. Kaveri and Gramapriya, of
poultry birds and 2 hand bills on antimicrobial resistance etc. in Bengali language.
Dr B. Mondal briefed about the Institute, the Indian Veterinary Research Institute and the
scopes of animal husbandry specially backyard poultry rearing and goat farming for income
generation. He also highlighted the importance of hygienic rearing to prevent the diseases. Dr.
G. K. Das delivered his talk on the reasons for selection of the block Khejuri II, activities to be
undertaken and types of inputs given through the SC SP programme. Dr. Arun Kumar Das
delivered his talk on need of hygienic practices of poultry housing to reduce the chick and adult
mortality. Dr. Debasis Pramanik appraised the beneficiaries about the scopes of various
schemes launched by the Animal Resource Department, Govt. of West Bengal as well as
Central Govt time to time. Dr. Parimal Mondal also reminded the beneficiaries to avail the
above said schemes.
Following the awareness programme, animal seed like RIR chicks (n=1020), chick
transportation cages (n=55) and poultry feeds (550 Kg) were distributed among the
beneficiaries. Besides, each beneficiary also received a kit bag consisting feed supplements like
vitamins and minerals and also liver extract, dewormer and anti-stress formulation etc.
