- Animal Adaptations by: Teach to Enrich NGSS 3-LS4-3: For any particular environment, some kinds of organisms survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all CASS 3.3a: Students know plants and animals have structures that serve different functions in growth, survival, and reproduction.
- Slide 2
- What is an Adaptation? A physical trait that helps in the survival of the species. A slow process that occurs over time so that a species survives in its environment. Plants and animals must adapt to survive!
- Slide 3
- Adaptations: armor camouflage Flight speed insulation (keep heat) radiation (release heat) Webbed feet Sharp teeth Sharp claws
- Slide 4
- Armor Protection against other predators. Protection from the environment.
- Slide 5
- Camouflage Helps animals blend in with their surroundings Predators can sneak up on prey Prey can better hide from Predators
- Slide 6
- Flight Used to fly away or perch away from predators Some predators fly at high speeds to catch prey (raptors)
- Slide 7
- Speed Used to take down prey Used to escape other predators
- Slide 8
- Hibernation Animals store up large amounts of fat during harsh winter condition. Animals burn the stored fat and stay warm at the same time
- Slide 9
- Radiation Animals are able to let off heat during hot summer months. These animals typically have a body part (usually the ears) that are thin and contain a lot of blood veins. Blood releases heat
- Slide 10
- Webbed Feet Land/Water animals have adapted to be able to both walk and have an advantage while swimming. Webbed feet allows animals to swim faster.
- Slide 11
- Sharp Teeth Typically used for hunting and killing prey, carnivores use their teeth to cut and tear flesh.
- Slide 12
- Sharp Claws Used to attack and take down prey Can be used as a tool to dig for food or shelter. Used for climbing Can be used as defense, ward off predators
