About the 50 states / 50

songs project

Shawn#s Mission Statement: .

Being prolific is an artist!s dream,

although we all know that being

productive never lasts. Eventually, we

hit an enormous wall and our creativity

and ambition flies right out the window.

During the summer of 2009, I was on

one of the countless mini-tours across

the country, sitting in the van bummed

out and spacing out. I was kind of

miserable and truly contemplating the

idea of spending most of my young life

on tour. I mean, I understand touring is

crucial for a musician and sometimes

it!s really fun, but why does it have to

feel so unproductive? Wake up, drive,

wait outside the venue, play, drink,

sleep, etc... Why am I wasting all this

time on the road, when I should be at

home recording and writing new

music? That!s when it hit me like a ton

of bricks!! Why don!t I bring the writing

and recording on the road with me? I

usually have a ton of free time on the

road where I am usually being

unproductive. Why don!t I push myself

and finally strive to become that prolific

artist that I dreamed of as kid?

So here is what I!ve got: Give myself a deadline of one

year (starting April 1st 2010) to play a show and write

and record a song in each state in the USA. 50 songs in

50 states in one year. The songs will have to be longer

that two minutes and I can!t start writing the song until I

cross the state line (no cheating.) Yes, I know you people

will call me a wannabe (Sufjan) but seriously! This

project is actually not a joke, plus I will accomplish it.

Moholt from The Armchairs played guitar, keys, and bass for

me for April. I met Andy through the internet. I think he

contacted me about playing a show once and our two bands

played The Note in West Chester together which is Bam Margera!s venue and played to no one!”

ON THE ROAD

Tour Diaries of Shawn Rosenblatt .

Pre!tour: .

I decided to start my year long project in the state where I was born and raised. I figured I would have a ton of friend!s couches to crash on in Philly and I could spend time with my family. My mom was getting re"married to a man named Stan in March and I brought my girlfriend at the time Sarah along for the ride out there. .

I didn!t play any shows going out to Pennsylvania because my mom insisted that she wanted us there two days in advance. I don!t blame her, last time I drove out east with Sarah, my van broke down four times. Also, Jewish moms worry a bunch! It was really nice to spend time with Sarah because I wouldn!t see her for 2 months. Really sad shit, kinda clich#, and very frightening. This was the start of a new chapter in my life as a college graduate with the goal to make music a career. I would be without a home for the first time ever. No really plan for the future except to record 50 songs in 50 states. A silly little project that would distract me from the real bullshit of life. Something that would make me feel important/special as a prolific musician..

April 10, 2010

The Ox ! Philadelphia, PA . .

First state out of the way! 49 to go! First show of the 50 states tour was at a co"ed $punk rock% fraternity at University of Pennsylvania called Pilam. They have a festival that we played called Human BBQ. There were 30 kegs of a bunch of really nice beer that were located in each student!s room. They were technically not aloud to have alcohol at their shows, so they disguised it by using used $clean% soda cans as cups to fill with the keg beer. GENIUS. No wonder they are ivy league. .

Recording went smooth although didn!t get as much recorded as I want to. Luckily, I will be in PA for another week in May to work on the song. Thanks to Bernie, Vince, Chadwick, and Dan from the Ox for letting me record at their warehouse and crash on their couch.

April 15, 2010. Mojo 13 ! Wilmington, DE

. .

.

AWFUL! Played to two kids we met at the bar.

April 17, 2010 . House ! Rehoboth Beach, DE

. .

We played a house show in Rehoboth beach at these 16 year old kid!s parent!s house. It made Mark feel really old. I enjoyed myself! There were some kids talking shit on our equipment before we started playing. They called us flower core because of the flower in my guitar and couldn!t understand how we could play without a bass, but as soon as we finished our set they seemed to be blown away. Sold way too much merch for one show. Recorded the DE song in their garage. .

An

May 1, 2010 Columbia Heights ! Washington, D.C.

. .

Did you really think I was only going to do 50 songs on this tour? No way! Bonus song. Played a house show with State Department and Natives. Fun times.
