PARENT SCHOOL SUPPORT
COMMITTEE
The 2019-2020 AES Parent School Support
Committee (PSSC) has been formed and
consists of the following: Michelle
Hornbrook, Jennifer Miller, Misty Gervais,
Amanda-Rose Dubroy, Vicki Kierstead, Jodi
Totton-Cummings. Our staff members are:
Principal Jayne Bettle and Staff
Representative Christy Hoyt.
The role of the PSSC is to advise the
Principal on education and policy issues, as
well as to work with the Principal on the
development and evolution of the School
Improvement Plan (SIP). The committee
also communicates with the District
Education Council on PSSC matters. The
main objectives of the PSSC are to promote
communication between the student families
and the school, to encourage parental
involvement within the school, and to focus
on the collective needs of all students.

Home & School Update: We are excited to get our year kicked off with our first meeting which was held in September, where we voted on our new Executive. Positions were filled as follows: President: Jodi Totton-Cummings Vice President: Jenn Miller Secretary: Misty Humble-Gervais Treasurer: Vicki MacLean Kierstead Hot Lunch: Chelsea Edwards , Michelle Hornbrook & Amanda-Rose Dubroy Congratulations to the new executive, looking forward to a great year! A note was sent home earlier in the year about a $5 Home & School fee. This fee is a membership fee which we pay to the Provincial Home & School Association to allow us to vote on matters that arise, attend the annual general meeting and be kept in the loop of what Home & School Associations are doing across the province. This is not a mandatory fee to be part of our Home & School but by paying the fee it gives you a position to be a collective voice with others who are invested in the well-being of our schools.
Our Hot Lunch program will be kicking off in October with some fresh new flavors and some old traditions. Researching healthy options for the program can be a task all on its own. We try to stay within the guidelines of the Districts Healthy Eating Policy, Policy 711, which you can find online. We are excited to have started planning of our first activity for AES! Our annual Halloween Festivities will take place on Thursday Oct 31st. More details will follow but we will be looking for parent volunteers to join us that day for decorating, help supervise stations and clean up. This is an event that the students (and staff) look forward to and love! If you can devote sometime we will be discussing it further at our next meeting on Monday, October 21st @ 7PM. Please mark on your calendars that we will be meeting the 3rd Monday of each month and new faces are always welcome! A month into our school year and exciting things are happening already! Remember to Like & Follow us on Facebook @ Apohaqui Elementary Home & School Association
Hot Lunch Quick Tips: ~ Fill In & Return Form Provided! We strive to stay organized and serving many students can get crazy. The form provided includes all the information we need to ensure your child gets exactly what they order. Our memories are good - but we are unable to remember every time what your child "got last month"; please help us by filling in ALL the information. ~ Payments: Please send correct change, we are unable to make & return change regardless of the amount. ~ Return on Time! Due to our program being out-sourced we must adhere to our vendors deadlines. We cannot accept late orders for any reason.
Battery Recycling Program
We will once again be running the Battery Recycling
Program. For every 5 batteries that are brought in,
the student will receive one ballot. At the end of the
school year, at least one name will be drawn from all
entries over the year and will be presented with a
prize.

Literacy Minute
Reading Aloud – Family Fun! Interaction with
a book can be a lot of fun. One of the best ways
to ensure that kids are having a good time
reading is to have fun with it yourself. There are
many ways to help this happen.
Funny Voices: You can do it; squeaky voice for
mouse and a deep voice for dad. The kids love
it.
Chorus Read: Read the text together.
Echo Read: you read a phrase, and the child
echoes it back
Gesture Broadly
Skype Read: if you have and use Skype, have a
loved one Skype read so you can see each other.
Happy Reading Everyone!
‘The Pumpkin Man’
will be visiting AES on Tuesday, October 29th. Each student will receive a pumpkin ($1.25 each please) to take home. Some classes may have special Art projects planned around/with the pumpkins as well. A special thank you to Ken Reicker who will bring us our pumpkins.
October 31st Halloween Party
A dance and other special activities will be held on the afternoon of October 31st. Students are encouraged to
bring costumes to school and to put them on after lunch. Healthy snacks will be provided to the students so there
will be no need to send in extra treats. We all look forward to this special event!
Thanks again to the AES Home & School and parent volunteers for their support.
Thank you for your generous contributions
toward ‘Toonies for Terry. Apohaqui
Elementary students donated $111 which
will be turned over to the Terry Fox
Foundation.
It is always so important for children to
learn to be global citizens.
Apohaqui Elementary School Chess Club
Chess is a popular worldwide activity that
enhances math skills by using higher cognitive
(thinking) skills such as critical thinking and
problem solving skills. It is also a social
activity that encourages patience, good
sportsmanship and self-esteem.
Our AES Chess Club has started for those
who want to learn how to play and for those
who already know how to play.
There are some resources in our school
library and on the internet should you wish to
help your child with their chess playing skills.
The internet site below give elementary level
chess tutorials to help teach and explain the
game from the simplest moves to the more
complicated plays.

Attendance Matters! * Attendance matters as early as kindergarten.
Studies show many children who miss too
many days in kindergarten and first grade
can struggle academically in later years.
They often have trouble mastering reading
by the end of third grade.
* Too many absent students can affect the
whole classroom by slowing down
instruction.
Please be aware of school start times (the first
bell goes at 8:00 am) and completion times
(Primary at 2:05 and Upper Elementary 2:15).
Tardy students usually don’t enter the classroom
quietly – instruction can be disrupted; and
leaving early is often difficult on the students and
teacher.
Checking in at the office helps us to ensure that
we know when students are coming and going.
It also allows teachers to better maintain student attention and keep more uninterrupted
learning time for all. To highlight the importance of attendance, we
will acknowledge student Perfect Attendance
each month of the year.
Congratulations to the students and to you, the parents, as well! We recognize your efforts in getting your child to school every day.
