Angling in South-West DenmarkWelcome to best fishing locations in Denmark

Without a doubt you are familiar with the term “An angler´s Par-adise”. Throughout the years lots of fishing locations have beendescribed with this uncompromising term and for most of themprobably with good reason. Just to point out that in the whole ofEurope it will be difficult to find better locations for angling thanin the South-west Jutland. In the southwestern part of Denmark you´ll find angling locationsof very high standard and every stream has a fine population offish. Contrary to lots of our neighbouring Countries you´ll neverfind streams or lakes with no fish, and if you get familiar with the con-ditions you´ll hardlyever return emptyhanded from a day offishing.Nowhere in Europecan compete with thequantity in the waters ofSouth Jutland, and you´ll also find it difficult to find numerous lo-cations that can compete with the quantity of salmon, and we´vegot a lot more to offer. The great variation of potential fishing activities can satisfy everyangler. Whether you are passionate about coarse fishing, activespinner fishing, or the art of fly-fishing, you´ll be able to find yourown little paradise. This guide is especially for anglers, who can easily identify withthe quotation above, but others with an interest in fishing mightalso benefit from reading this, and the beginners will definitelyfind lots of good advice and guidance for a nice day of fishing.

A bad day of fishingis always better thana god day at work

Salmon and Sea trout You probably already know what ittakes to be successful when fishing forsalmon and sea trout: the correct waterlevel and flow, the weather, the time ofyear and the time of day. There is always a chance of catching asalmon or a sea trout but a reasonablewater level and flow definitely increasesyour chances a lot.If heavy rain has raised the water levelin the stream significantly and the watergets brownish like coffee, more salmonand sea trout will swim up the streamand the chances of catching one will in-crease. When the water level rises it isalso harder for the fish to see you onthe bank. When the water level rises there willnot only be more fish in the stream,

there will also be a struggle among thefish that have just reached the streamand the ones that are already struggleto get the best spots make the fish agi-tated and aggressive but it will only in-crease your chances of a nice catch. The time of day is not as importantwhen the water level is high as whenthe water level is low, but generally fish-ing from sunset to sunrise is more ef-fective than fishing during the daytime, when fishing for migratory fish.Generally the water level is lower dur-ing summertime which makes anglingduring daytime less effective when fish-ing for salmon and sea trout. The fish hide under the bank, in theaquatic plants and in the deep poolsand not until sunset or at least an hourprior to sunset, you will see some activ-ity among the fish in the stream. The fish get out from their hideouts to

defend their spots and chase possiblerivals away.If you are lucky you can actually see thedark shadows under the waterline be-tween the sand banks in the curves ofthe stream.Angling in the summertime equals an-gling in the nighttime if you want thebest chances of catching a salmon or asea trout.A good idea is to get there early to geta good view of the entire surroundings, where to fish and where to be carefulfor holes on the bank, trees, bushes andelectric fences as it will be very difficultto see when night falls. Use ordinary - not too heavy - gear forfishing.

Facts

Fly-fishingIf you choose fly-fishing, a one-hand rodclass 8 and 10 feet, will be suitable formost streams. In bigger and widerstreams you might want to use a two-hand fly-fishing rod.In the early spring or in the closingstages of the season where the waterlevel and the flow is high, it might be agood idea to use a fast sinking fly line. When fishing during summertime orwhen the water level is low you canbenefit from using a floating line withsinking leader, you can get the leaderswith different sinking time. Sinkingleader number 5 is adequate and is ac-tually only used when the water leveland flow is very high. You will often benefit from fishing withyour fly close to the bottom but duringnighttime a high fishing fly that floats onthe surface can be surprisingly effective. The choice of fly is yours but a brownand bushy fly is definitely worth a shotas your first choice. The pattern of the fly is also a very in-dividual choice as it hasn´t been scien-tifically proven that one certain patternis better than the other, although itmight be a good idea to contact a localtackle dealer for tips on what tochoose for a certain stream. For fishing in the evening and at nighthere are some tips on how to get thebest results.Cast the fly diagonally across thestream landing on the surface approxi-mately 20-40 cm. from the oppositebank, then let the flow lead the flyacross the stream to where you standand you might want to give it a fewjerks on the way. When it’s time for another cast thenpick up the fly and repeat your cast. When casting the fly do it without theback cast because of the risk of the linegetting caught in something behind you.In the dark it is very hard to free yourline. It also makes the fishing easier withoutusing the back cast. It´s a good idea to let the fly brieflytouch the water a few meters in frontof your actual target, then pick up the

fly and repeat your cast to place the flyon the spot chosen by you. By using thistechnique you´ll get a better look at theactual length of your first cast and thenit is easier to determine exactly howmuch longer your final cast should be. Furthermore you´ll see that the firstcast provokes the fish and at your finalcast it will rise aggressively to take thefly. Most of the fish snatch where the flyhits the surface close to the oppositebank and within the first few meters. This may be a consequence of the fly´sactivity from the moment it hits thesurface and till it´s grabbed by the flowand accelerates to the middle of thestream. When the fly reaches the mid-dle the speed will decrease and as itgets closer to where you stand it willbe completely still, but it doesn´t haveto be this way.

Day fishingWhen fishing during day time in the sum-mer, these rules have to be followed:•Fish deep, close to the aquatic plants andbank and be careful when moving alongthe bank.•Keep a larger distance to the fish so youdon’t scare them away, so the cast willhave to be longer than when fishing atnight.

It is definitely worth trying to activatethe fly from the middle of the streameither by tightening or loosening yourline, or by raising and lowering yourrod. When the fly gets closer to whereyou stand then give the line a few long aquick jerks till it gets close enough foranother cast.Remember - no back cast.

Spinner-fishingSpinner-fishing is also best in the eve-ning or at night time and like fly-fishingyou have to go deep during daytime andin the evening or at night you can trywhich depths are suitable on the day.The choice of gear is a matter of opin-ion as there is no scientific proof thatone would be better than the other.Spinner fishing is more relaxing than flyfishing as the lure creates its own life-like movements. If the flow is powerfulyou might have the possibility of letting

ANGLING IN SOUTH WEST DENMARK4

Fly-fishing and Spinner-fishing

Page 5: Angling in Southwest Jutland

the spinner do the work, you just haveto find the right spots where you canbenefit from this e.g. the curves in thestream or where the stream narrowscreating a faster flow.Otherwise the rules are the same asfor fly-fishing.

Worm-fishingFishing with worms is different from flyand spinner fishing, a lot of placeswhere spinner or fly fishing is difficult itis possible to use worms e.g. if the wa-ter is clear and the level is low or ifthere are a lot of aquatic plants, andyou do it without scaring the fish away. You´ve got lots of choices when wormfishing, here are some of them:

Up and down stream without a float:You cast up stream away from the spotand then very slowly roll it in. At theend of your line you put a piece of leadand 30-50 cm. above you place yourhook length.

Drifting with a float:This type of angling is only possible inbigger and wider streams, as in thesmaller ones you´ll scare the fish awaybefore the worm gets to where the fishis. When choosing this technique you castyour tackle up stream and let it floatback and through the spot a few timesand finally let the worm float furtherdown the stream through the aquaticplants. Remember to walk in front ofthe worm as it makes it easier to hookthe fish or free yourself from the aquatic plants if you get caught in them.

Drifting with a float - standing still:This technique is very useful in smallstreams and where there are lots ofaquatic plants. You place yourself upstream from thespot with the correct distance so youdon´t scare the fish away. Then youslowly sink the worm and just let it trotdownstream to the spot.It can be difficult to hook the fish pro-perly since you might have a lot slack to

role in before you can strike the hook, the fish has turned upstream with it´shead towards you so if you strike toohard there is a big possibility that you´llpull the hook right out of the fish´smouth.

Brown trout

Brown trout - find the right spot

Several of our streams contain a goodhead of grayling, in some streams theyare still completely protected. Some anglers say that the grayling is by far thegreatest challenge as it is very hard tomake it take, others say that it is easyto get a take from the grayling but it ismore difficult to get a good hookhold. The grayling can be caught day andnight but at sunset the activity declines.

To catch the grayling, fly-fishing is thebest if not the only way to succeed al-though small lures or worms can alsotempt the grayling. It is definitely notnecessary to see rising grayling to fishfor them. If you are at a stream that youknow contains a lot of grayling, justreach for the fly and go for it, and if youdon´t succeed at the surface then godeep, maybe to the bottom.

Grayling without flowThat fishing for grayling requires astream with areas of strong flow is athing of the past. It is possible to catchlarge grayling where the flow is veryslow, it just requires a more activetechnique with lots of small quickjerks when taking in the fly.

Grayling - the true fly fish

Fly-fishingWithout a doubt fly-fishing is the bestway to catch a brown trout.Wet fly fishing can be done throughoutthe season, but a dry fly is best when itis spawning time.It is hard to beat the feeling you getwhen using a dry fly and you see a bigbrown trout rise to catch it - it´s al-most like your heart stops. The chance of catching brown troutvaries from every stream and differentfishing spots in the stream.

Here are some tips to improve yourchances:•If there are no signs of rising fish, youhave to go deep almost to the bottom.•If you use two flies you might want touse a small Red Tag at the end of yourline, and a Red Tag Planner on the drop-per.•If you´re still out of luck, you could tryto switch the dropper fly with a smallerfly or a nymph. •The choice of wet or dry fly dependson what the fish are eating on the dayso you have to pay attention to what ishatching and what is flying in the air.

•To make it simple: Try different thingsuntil the fish start taking. It is also possible to catch a browntrout using small spinners and lures, when you find the right spots it is onlya matter of time and patience beforethe fish start snatching.

Worm-fishingIs another successful technique to catcha brown trout, but you have to be verycareful as the brown trout, no matterthe size, have a tendency to swalloweverything both hook and worm, andonly a few survive that. Therefore youhave to be alert and ready to strike be-fore the fish swallows everything. Agood idea, when using worms to catchbrown trout, is to remove the barbfrom the hook. Please be very gentle when releasingthe fish.

The vulnerable brown trout

Angling for brown trout has to be donewith consideration. For the following 3reasons we advise you not to take morethan 2 home per season.

•The brown trout grows very slowly and just a small amount of Overfishing canhave serious consequences for the stock.

•The brown trout feeds in the stream which makes it an easier target for the anglers bait than salmon and sea trout.

•The brown trout is like a reserve for the sea trout as some of the spawn swim out the sea and return later as a sea trout.

Rainbow trout

Rainbow trout - a fighter without comparison

The outstanding nature is a definite rewardSouthern Jutland is one of the areas in Denmark with the smallest amount of empty handed fishing trips butwith an unpredictable hobby as angling you can never be sure. So if you have had a bad day of fishing consideryourself lucky anyway, as you´ve had the chance of enjoying the fantastic fauna and wildlife in the area, andyou´ve just got to try your luck another time - the fish are out there. Tight lines!

Places to go before yourfishing tripMost of the local angling associa-tions have great websites with up-dates on the latest catches, you´llfind the addresses in the back of thisguide.

When you receive this guide you canalso get a complete map over thestreams you plan to visit.Remember that the local distributersof fishing gear are always supportivewhen it concerns information aboutthe best fishing according to season, what gear to use and where to go.

On www.visitsydvestjylland.comyou´ll find information about accom-modations and restaurants and what-ever is useful when you´re not fish-ing.

Lots of the streams contain a smallstock of rainbow trout. They´ve all es-caped from fish farms and are thereforenot a part of the streams natural ecolo-gy. Consequently there is no minimumsize or closed season for the rainbowtrout. If you´ve ever tried to catch a rainbowtrout above the size of 40 cm. you´llknow what a magnificent fighter it is.You can catch a rainbow trout using fly, spinners or worms. It is not particular

about its food but the longer it hasbeen in the stream, the harder it is tocatch. If you are lucky enough to catch a rain-bow trout that has been to sea, a so-called Steelhead, you have to be pre-pared for a fight out of the ordinary. The smaller rainbow trout stay near theponds and the slightly bigger ones arescattered through the whole streamsystem. Generally they stay in the samebiotopes as the brown trout.

Fishing rights: From the bridge of Emmerske to the bridge at HostrupPræstegård Slogså and UgebækIn the area around Bylderup Bov thesestreams offer you a fine opportunity forfishing for brown trout and grayling. Especially grayling stocks have increasedas grayling over 40 cm are frequentlycaught.

Fishing rights:In Slogså from the bridge west of Bre-devad to the merge in Grønå at Saks-borg (small parts are not included)In Ugebæk from Vøvlebro til Karlsvrå.

SønderåIn Sønderå that runs near the borderbetween Denmark and Germany you´llfind a fine amount of brown trout. Inthe autumn you´ll also have good chan-ces of catching salmon or sea trout. Asseen in Arnå the amount of graylinghave increased year-by-year and further-more you´ll have a chance of catchingrainbow trout which have escaped fromfish farms nearby. Naturally they do notbelong in the river and should there-fore, no matter the size, not be re-turned to the water so as to preservethe natural environment in the stream.

Fishing rights:Sønderå from Rens to Bejerskro (someparts are not included).

Terkelsbøl ÅAll types of fishing are possible, al-though masses of aquatic plants and aslow water flow can make it difficultduring summer time. Here lots of finebrown trout are caught using worm asbait. Use the bait without float and leadof any kind, so it can go into every nookand cranny, where the big fish are. Many are caught on spinners, fly orsmall wobblers.Fishing rights: In Terkelsbølå fromSøllingvrå mill to Karlsvrå and a smallpart east of the bridge at Søllingvrå mill.

VidåVidå, which is also the name of the as-sociation, is a result of Arnå and Hvirlåuniting at Emmerske app. 3 km east ofTønder. Vidå is surrounded by a dike onthe part from Emmerske to Tønder andfurther on to Rudbøl. Vidå offers youlots of different possibilities for coarsefishing and angling for eel, salmon andsea trout. In some areas the flow is al-most immobile but from the merging ofGrønå south of Tønder it gets more ac-

tive. From the small harbour in Læganand further to the west the stream isalmost river like and fishing in this areais only possible using a boat.

Coarse fishing:Vidå is a true paradise for the coarseangler. The stream contains one of thelargest amounts of different speciessuch as eel, perch, roach, bream, tenchand ide - you´ll never know whatyou´re going to catch. It is the calm partdown stream to Tønder and aroundLægan that appeals to the coarse fish, ifit is possible for you to get a boat thereare good possibilities in Magisterkogenfrom Lægan to the lake in Rudbøl.

Sea trout/salmon: The largest amount of sea trout arecaught from April to October. Mainlyusing spinners and wobblers but fly fish-ing and fishing using live bait (worm/shrimps) is used. The stream is influ-enced by an increasing amount of sal-mon which is probably due to the re-lease of salmon fry during the last 5-6years.

Pike and zander:Vidå has a fair amount of large pike;

Gels ÅThe best water in Denmark for seatrout and the population is in a leagueof it´s own. Each year some of thelargest sea trout in Denmark are caughtin the Ribe Å area and a sea trout of 10kg. is not unusual. The population of seatrout has gradually grown so much thatthere is no need for stocking fish any-more.Therefore the stocking in the Ribe Åarea has been focused on the salmonduring the last couple of years.

Grindsted Å and Ansager ÅFrom the merging of Grindsted Å andAnsager Å youre allowed to go app. 1 km.up streams in both. Just follow the signs.

Varde Å- probably the best place in Denmark for salmon fishing.

Whether Varde Å is the bestplace in Denmark for fishingsalmon or not is still in question, but with several catches be-tween 15 and 20 kg. it is definitelyin the running to become the bestplace in Denmark.

Varde Å is large and deep - after Danishconditions. It is app. 100 km. long andthe average depth is app. 2 m.From its source and to the where itruns unhindered into Ho Bugt, you´llexperience beautiful natural surround-ings and an extraordinary wildlife. Thestream contains a large head of salmonand sea trout, and the possibilities forcatching a pike, perch, bream, grayling, eel and brown trout are also good. Previously the stream has suffered frompollution and the dams in connectionwith the many fish farms has been a

Infohuge obstacle for the fish to reach theirspawning ground. Furthermore a lot ofthe streams natural curves werestraightened and the water was lead in-to artificial canals and lakes to gain elec-tricity from the water.

Especially the fish that uses the streamsas spawning ground suffered from this. Things are changing for the better, forVarde Å and its many species.

The water is no longer polluted and, aswe speak, a lot of the natural curves arebeing restored so the river runsthrough it´s natural path and there areno more obstacles for salmon, sea troutand houting. Now we´ll guide you through all thepossibilities of fishing in the river and inall it´s side-streams:

Fishing rights:Varde Sportsfiskerforening (VSF (VardeAngling Association)) holds the fishingrights in a large part of the fishing areaaround Varde Å and each year app. 1200day ticket anglers visits the area. If you would like to try your luck oncatching a sea trout or maybe a nicesalmon then join the association (VSF)or buy a day ticket - the price(in 2011)is 200 dkr. Remember also to get thenational fishing license before you gofishing.

Like other river areas the area roundVarde Å also is a mixture of severalmerging streams where VSF holds thefishing rights in the main part. If you area member of VSF you can also go fishingin lots of other places than just Varde Å.

Varde Sportsfisker Forening (VSF) Varde Sportsfiskerforening with morethan 700 members have since 1926 beenfishing in Varde Å and they still hold thefishing rights. Through the years VSF hasdone a great job to take care of the streamand have made it one of the best streamsin Denmark for salmon and sea trout. Thehigh quality is the outcome of extraordi-nary work on increasing the geneticallycorrect population of salmon and sea troutin the area of Varde Å. Furthermore a lot ofeffort has been put into the restoration ofthe streams and the laying out and takingcare of the spawning grounds. These ini-tiatives have made the area around VardeÅ into some of the best and most variedfishing waters in Denmark.

Mølby-Eg-partThe Mølby-Eg-part of Varde Å is furtherupsteam close to Grindsted. The waterin this part is very clear and all freshwater fish are represented here. When the restoration of Varde Å iscompleted, the Mølby-Eng part is ex-pected to be the future spawningground for the salmon, and this willtake Varde Å even further towards be-ing the best salmon stream in Denmark. If you enjoy beautiful nature with a fastflowing and clear stream visit the Møl-by-Eng-part and don´t forget your fly-fishing rod, if you want to challenge thelarge population of brown trout andgrayling in this area. Varde Sportsfiskerforenings (VSF) daytickets can be bought in lots of places inthe local area and at The Danish AnglingAssociation.

Holme ÅHolme Å runs into Varde Å, but in thelast part it runs through an artificialcanal and into Karlsgårde Sø. The out-come is that the fish that swim up fromthe sea to spawn e.g. salmon, sea troutand houting have great difficulties inpassing the dams. Luckily Holme Å holds a large andstrong population of brown trout andgrayling, which you can challenge by fly-fishing. If you enjoy this kind of fishing don´tdeny your self a fishing trip to Holme Å,where bend after bend reveals numer-ous great spots. Brown trout are re-leased into Holme Å and the stock ofrainbow trout is good.

Fishing rights:The fishing rights to Holme Å includesthe part from Tofterup and down to themerging with Karlsgårde Sø - keep aneye out for the signs. There are several possible access roadsand parking sites by the bridges atTofterup, Puglund, Hostrup and thegravel pit. Fishing is prohibited around fish farmsand fish ladders. Some stretches are notincluded in the lease, signs indicatewhere. Day tickets can be bought atTofterup-Starup Fiskeriforening (Anglingassociation).

Linding ÅLinding Å is a small stream which runsinto Varde Å from the north. Thestream is small but it´s got a strongflow and lots of bends. It hasn´t beenchanged since the Ice Age and hasn´tbeen exposed to straightening or pollu-

This stretch offers you some of thebest fishing for brown trout andgrayling in Denmark and almost allspecies of fresh water fish are repre-sented in this clean and beautifulstream. Ansager Å is untouched by human handand still runs its natural path as it hasdone since the ice age. One curve leadsto another in this beautiful and un-touched natural environ where you canget lost in your own thoughts. East of the town Ansager the stream isvery easy to access and there is plentyof room on both sides witch makes itsuitable for all kinds of fishing. Thestretch west of Ansager is on the otherhand very challenging as you have lotsof old oak trees and European elder al-most in the middle of the stream. Onthis part you can definitely put yourfishing skills to the test, but it is worththe trouble as many large fish have beencaught in the deep pools below the oaktrees. Ansager Å and the sidestream of Kær-bæk Bæk is expected to become one ofthe major spawning grounds for salmon, sea trout and houting when the nature-restoration project is finished
