Christmas Services Christmas service times are included in a separate notice within your pew slip. There are also a large number of printed A5 flyers to take and distribute as you are able to. Please consider who you can invite to attend a service over Christmas with us this year.

Collection of Food and Toys Please see the notice elsewhere regarding the collection of food and toys for the Anglicare Victoria Christmas appeal. Non-perishable food and presents (unwrapped please) can be left in the church each Sunday during Advent and over the Christmas services.

December barbecue The December barbecue (provided) will take place at 6pm on the evening of Sunday 21st December, on the south lawn (weather permitting). The intention is that those leaving the Messy Church Christmas crafts, taking place in the Hall from 5pm that day, might then join the barbecue, along with those attending the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, who are welcome to join the barbecue in advance of the 7pm service.

Farewell to Professor Mel Waters There will be a parish and choir farewell for Professor Mel Waters and Nina following the service of Nine Lessons & Carols at 7pm on Sunday 21st December, over Christmas drinks and nibbles in the Buxton Hall. All parishioners are invited to make their way into the Buxton Hall at the conclusion of the service for the refreshments, and farewell. To assist with catering for this, we ask that as many as possible bring a plate of food to share and / or a bottle of wine or champagne, and that these be delivered to the Buxton Hall before the service commences at 7pm. Envelopes for the purpose of donations toward a gift for Mel are with this pewsheet.

New Director of Music & Organist The vicar is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Christopher Cook as Director of Music and Organist from 1st February 2015. Chris comes to the parish with several decades of experience as a Cathedral, parish and international concert organist, and replaces Professor Mel Waters, who is retiring at the end of January. A message from Chris follows. We look forward to welcoming Chris to the parish in the new year, and to the fine tradition of musical and choral excellence continuing at St John’s under his leadership.

It gives me great pleasure to accept the position of Director of Music at St John's Toorak, and I am humbled by the trust placed in me.

My first experience as a liturgical musician was playing for my local parish in 1976, and from then I've worked in Cathedrals, inner city parishes, taught and examined organ at tertiary level, piano at secondary level, and even worked as a building manager. I graduated in piano and organ and try to keep up the differing techniques for both instruments.

I have a strong vision for the Heritage Parishes, as I term them. With the resources with which we are entrusted: buildings, grounds, capital, staff, scholars, transient visitors and long-term families, we have a God-given opportunity to enhance the beauty of the liturgy, as well as being conduits to integrate the broader community. We need to connect outwards as much as we meditate inwards.

It is my hope that I am able to broaden the excellent base already here, and inspire more to join the parish community through the fine Arts program they experience.
