HOW WE WORK The Archbishop of Sydney’s Anglican Aid is an aid and ministry support agency of Sydney Anglicans in partnership with the global church. We aim to see the grace of God overflowing to a world in need, in order to strengthen churches and help transform communities in Australia and overseas.

Anglican AidAnglican Aid is a charity registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), and is accredited by the Christian Management Australia’s Standards Council. As a Public Benevolent Institution (PBI), Anglican Aid supports activities in Australia and overseas. All donations to Anglican Aid are tax deductible.

In Australia, Anglican Aid’s Community Care projects support local churches to provide activities which meet the needs of their communities in addressing social disadvantage.

Internationally, Anglican Aid often works with low-capacity partners, supporting small projects that the local community has identified as necessary and urgent. We are involved with a wide range of health, education, income generation, and other capacity building initiatives. Anglican Aid works with Christian churches and organisations, often within the GAFCON or Global South networks, and where we have a personal, trusted connection. This reduces the overhead costs of establishing local delivery agencies, as faithful churches exist in most geographic areas of the work we support.

ANGLICAN AID IS ALSO THE TRUSTEE OF TWO FUNDS:

The Overseas Relief and Aid FundThe Overseas Relief and Aid Fund (ORAF) supports longer term development projects which meet the Overseas Aid Gift Deduction Scheme criteria. These projects assist in empowering and building the capacity of local communities to create sustainable change. ORAF is a registered charity with the ACNC.

The Overseas Ministry FundThe Overseas Ministry Fund supports ministries in places where strong Bible training is limited and under-resourced, by providing financial support for evangelistic activities and theological training. In doing so, we support the next generation of gospel workers so that the grace of Jesus Christ will be known more widely in the developing world. As a registered charity with the ACNC, donations to the Overseas Ministry Fund are not tax-deductible. During the last year, the OMF was approved by the Australian Taxation Office to operate an approved “School Building Fund” (SBF). This fund is eligible to receive tax deductible donations to support capital works at theological colleges.

Thank you for supporting Anglican Aid. We are your aid and ministry support agency and with your help we have worked tirelessly around the globe to strengthen churches and help transform communities.

This last financial year has been a year of growth and change for Anglican Aid. You will all be aware that we have a new Archbishop, but Anglican Aid has also gained a new CEO (Rev Tim Swan), a new Chair and a large turnover in the Board. This has given us the opportunity to carefully review Anglican Aid governance, work on a new strategic plan for the next 5 years, and initiate new programs.

As a result of our governance review, we have made changes to our compliance obligations. The Overseas Relief and Aid Fund was previously a signatory member of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), before voluntarily withdrawing in April 2021. ORAF has not sought government funding through DFAT since 2014, and our obligations to the External Conduct Standards, the Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission and CMA Standards Council will ensure we continue to meet high standards in corporate governance, public accountability and financial management.

One of Anglican Aid’s new strategic directions is to build more holistic partnerships. This means that our preference is to strengthen the church through the training of its current and future leaders by providing scholarships to study at Bible College. At the same time, we will work to transform the community through the local church by delivering aid and development programs to the community.

Our partnership with the Diocese of Toliara in southern Madagascar is an example of this holistic approach. Through the new Bible College Student Sponsorship program, Anglican Aid is sponsoring students at St Patrick’s Bible College from Toliara and other dioceses. At the same time the provision of clean water via the church through the Water and Resilience development program will revolutionise the lives of many in this region. Not only will health outcomes improve through the reduction of serious waterborne diseases, but it will save many girls and women hours per day in search of water.

Toliara has also been in the grip of a devastating drought. Lifesaving emergency aid has been delivered through the local churches with the result that people have flocked to join churches. Over one thousand new families have joined local churches meaning that a new problem has arisen - how to disciple thousands of new Christians!

The work of Anglican Aid is vital. Thank you once again for your support. Can I urge you to continue your support of churches and communities around the world through prayer and sacrificial giving.

I rejoice at God’s kindness to Anglican Aid and the vulnerable communities we serve. Over the last financial year, Anglican Aid has made enormous progress in key areas of our mission and organisation.

One of the most significant areas was the launch of our Bible College Student Sponsorships, which encourage churches and individual believers in Australia to sponsor a Christian leader in a developing country to train at an evangelical Bible college we know and trust.

At the launch of this program, Bishop Peter Jensen urged us, “Support good theological education”. With your help, Anglican Aid has increased our support for theological education in the developing world by around 175% this year, helping see new churches planted, and established churches strengthened, churches which in turn are leading holistic transformation in their communities.

Our Bible College Student Sponsorships were launched just 8 months ago, and are already bearing fruit (see page 10). Going forward, I would love for Anglican Aid to facilitate even more sponsorships from more churches in Australia, to train leaders for more churches around the world.

2020-21 was of course a year of Covid, with extended lockdowns disproportionately impacting the poorest of the poor. With your support, Anglican Aid was able to send over $580,000 in emergency funds to 20 partners, helping tens of thousands through local Christian ministries.

Anglican Aid welcomed 5 more team members during the year, including for the newly created positions of Stakeholder Relations (Mike Southon), Theological Education Director (Chris Cooper), and Salesforce Administrator (Karen William), to serve the needs of our growing organisation. Long-serving Finance Manager Warren Richards retired in May 2021 with our well-earned gratitude.

This growth phase has also seen the professionalisation of Anglican Aid’s internal processes, including moves to modern accounting and HR systems to support excellent reporting and record keeping. It also saw the unveiling of Anglican Aid’s mobile-first website, bringing our web presence in step with contemporary supporter expectations.

This year, Anglican Aid worked on the administrative consolidation of our different Education and Bible Training projects, into a holistic Developing Countries Education Program. I was amazed to learn that this year, Anglican Aid had contributed to the education of over 4,000 people across the globe through schooling, adult education, and Bible training. We also established a tax deductible School Building Fund, through which we will be developing facilities for Bible colleges overseas.

Education continues to play a significant role in breaking cycles of poverty and opening up opportunities for vulnerable people like those living in refugee camps and slums. The Developing Countries Education Program will enable us to aid such people more effectively, especially as all our programs are delivered by local Christians, showing the love of Christ in action.

It is with joyful thanksgiving to God and the faithful supporters of Anglican Aid, who make all this work possible, that I share the stories in these pages with you. I pray you will be uplifted by this evidence of God working through Anglican Aid.

Let Grace Flow,

Canon Tim Swan

FROM FA MINE TO FAITH - EMERGENCY RELIEF LE ADS TO CHURCH GROW TH IN M ADAGASC ARWhen a terrible famine struck southern Madagascar in 2020, hundreds of people in the area perished from starvation. Through Anglican Aid, Christians in Sydney raised over $20,000 for rice, beans, and water which was distributed by the church.

“The place is totally dry, no water or food. People die every day. It is an urgent situation.” - Rev. Berthier Lainirina, Secretary of the Province of the Indian Ocean

This act of gospel-inspired love has had a dramatic impact on the region, with many saying “what religion is this that cares?”

As a result, church leaders baptised well over one thousand new believers. 13 village leaders asked for new churches to be started in their villages.

One of the new converts is over 100 years old, and was a respected witch-doctor in his village. He turned to Christ and burned all his charms and books, overflowing with joy.

“We want to thank Anglican Aid for providing this food. Thank you for your support. May God bless you. And we also thank God that we now have rain, by God’s grace and blessing. Praise the Lord!” - Berthier Lainirina

With your support, Anglican Aid has supplied the villages with seedlings for food crops. Together we are working with the church to build water-security infrastructure (like rainwater tanks) to provide our brothers and sisters with life-saving water for the long term in Jesus’ name.

Most people in this region are illiterate. To help new believers grow in Christ, Anglican Aid sent 325 audio-Bibles through our Overseas Ministry Fund, in partnership with Wycliffe and Megavoice, so the people can hear the Word of God in their own language.

We are thankful to God that Anglican Aid has a longstanding relationship with the Christians in Madagascar, going back decades. Over the years, the partnership has involved translating the Moore College PTC course into Malagasy, the local language, so that pastors could be trained to teach the Bible; and sponsoring Bible College students from Madagascar to do full-time study at St Patrick’s Bible College in Toliara.

This is a truly holistic partnership. We are helping the local church to meet the needs of their community with emergency relief, share the gospel with villagers, resource new believers with the Word of God, be trained to teach the Bible faithfully, and help the community to thrive with development projects like boreholes and rainwater tanks.

ANGLIC AN AID’S BIBLE COLLEGE STUDENT SPONSORSHIP PROGR A M: EQUIPPING THE NE X T GENER ATION OF CHRISTIAN LE ADERS IN DEVELOPING NATIONSOn Reformation Day, 31 October 2020, Anglican Aid launched its new Bible College Student Sponsorship Program. This exciting and unique initiative is now giving Australian Christians the opportunity to directly sponsor a future pastor from a developing country to study at a culturally relevant and trusted Bible College.

Since the 1990s, Anglican Aid has funded the theological education of hundreds of students through theological colleges across the globe. Through Anglican Aid’s international links, more and more bishops in the developing world have been asking the Diocese of Sydney for help in training their clergy. This was the catalyst for Anglican Aid to adopt an individual Bible College Student Sponsorship program.

Churches, Bible study groups, and individuals from around Australia are now supporting more than 100 Bible College students through Anglican Aid’s Bible College Student Sponsorship program. This is in addition to another 400 students Anglican Aid sponsors through other programs. The sponsored students are studying towards certificate, diploma, bachelor or higher awards, so that when they complete their course they will be fully prepared to defend and share the truth of the saving gospel of our Lord Jesus in their home country.

These emerging Christian leaders have been recommended by their local church pastor and the bishop of their diocese as being renowned in their community for their godly character and leadership ability. They come from many nations across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific.

More than 100 Australian Christians are already sponsoring students and building long-term relationships with them through committed prayer, regular correspondence and financial support as they complete their studies at Anglican Aid’s partner Bible Colleges.

In the time of the Reformation, the training of clergy and laity in the Bible was the key activity of the church, so that people might know the true and living God and his salvation through Christ alone. Anglican Aid’s Bible College Student Sponsorship Program aims to continue that legacy in our time, transforming communities and strengthening God’s church in the developing world, where it’s growing most rapidly - helping to fill the urgent need for biblically faithful pastors across the globe who are equipped in the Word of God according to our Reformation heritage.

RE: LETTER OF APPRECIATION

Our dearest sponsors of Anglican-Aid-Organisation and the spiritual teachers, we (the students) would like to express our deepest gratitude to you for your support on our studies and families. You have held unto the teaching of the scriptures, which we can paraphrase as follows: “We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.” (Romans 15:1.) During this pandemic (Covid-19) it will be a few strong Christians, the keepers of the Golden Rule: (love your neighbour as yourself) who can continue for the responsibility of kindness to assist others.

We are blessed to have you as a part of our life and your buttress will persist in the stories of South Sudanese. We heard that it is not only us who this organisation supports, but we can appreciate more as we are South Sudanese we left-back academically and especially our women. Please, let this letter serve as for your gratuity for which you received nothing material in return except the blessings of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanks once more for your generous support. We look forward to seeing some of your organisation members in person one day to express our sincerest gratitude face to face.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A STUDENT AT BUNDA BIBLE COLLEGE IN TANZANIABunda Bible College, in the Mara Diocese of Tanzania, is home to 24 students who are being sponsored through Anglican Aid’s Bible College Student Sponsorship Program (the largest number of students currently supported through Anglican Aid at any one college).

Men and women come to the college from different dioceses across Tanzania, bringing together students from different tribes, backgrounds, and church traditions, which greatly enriches their spiritual growth and fellowship. This is how they spend their days:

BIBLE TRAINING:

STUDENT LIFE - BUT NOT (QUITE) AS WE KNOW IT!As well as individual sponsorships for students to attend Bible colleges, Anglican Aid supports wider Bible Training initiatives encompassing building classrooms in rural Bible colleges, translating course materials into local languages, and vocational support for university ministry apprentices in the developing world.

Monday to Friday

SUNRISE The college day begins with a cup of black tea with sugar.

7.00AM Morning service in the chapel, which is in Swahili, except for once a week when it is conducted in English by Diploma students. Staff preach one day a week, with students doing the preaching and leading of services held on the other days.Student choirs are joyfully evident in all college activities.

After chapel, it is time to head to the first lectures of the day. These could be for subjects like Old Testament, Church History, Systematic Theology, and English.

10.00A M Time for a tea break with chapatis and then back to the classroom for more lectures on subjects like New Testament, Pastoral Theology, Church and Society, and Computer Studies.

1.30 PM It’s lunchtime! Six days a week will be a serving of rice or ugali, with beans and vegetables, but once a week there’s a meal of meat or fish!

AFTER LUNCH This is the programmed time for individual study. The college library is one of the best in Tanzania with 7,000 books and also computers. However, there is no stable internet connection.

LATE AFTERNOON Depending on the day of the week it could be student fellowship meetings or ministry in the local area, with one afternoon being set aside for the weekly college service of Holy Communion.

7.00 PM The evening meal, followed by getting ready for bed. The college has water and electricity connected, although both of these supplies can be problematic at times.

BEDTIME Night watchmen are employed by the college to be on guard.

SaturdayFirstly, there’s outside jobs, general cleaning, and washing to be done. Followed by private study and preparation time for Sunday ministry.

Bunda Bible College is located on the same Diocesan site outside of Bunda Town as Bunda Girls Secondary School and the Boys Brigade Mara Training Centre. Sometimes there’ll be a football match between the institutions with spectators from all three greatly enjoying the competitive events!

Sunday Following the college’s service at 7.00am, students go out in groups to local Bunda churches and other nearby villages to join in ministry. Some are within walking distance, and the college has a number of bicycles and also a car with a driver for those needing to go further afield.

At Bunda Bible College, supporters of Anglican Aid have helped to provide for operating expenses, capital works, and sponsorships for some students.

COMMUNIT Y LE ADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: LOVING IN AC TION AND TRUTH

In many developing countries, governments are slow to provide much-needed social services, emergency relief, and community development, especially in rural areas. The local church plays an essential role in filling this gap. Anglican Aid’s Community Leadership Development programs exist because the training of Biblically trained community leaders is vital for the ongoing development and wellbeing of vulnerable communities.

In the Diocese of Beni (Democratic Republic of Congo), families live in constant fear of being killed, raped, or kidnapped. When conflict intensified in 2020, church leaders came to Anglican Aid, requesting help to provide food and shelter to over 900 needy people.

It is the Church’s deep commitment to needs like this that encourages Anglican Aid to invest in the development of training that faithfully teaches gospel truth. Our desire is to see graduates equipped to holistically care for their poverty-stricken communities in word and deed.

2021 saw the completion of the Beni Bible Institute building project, where a current cohort of 30 students are training to become future church and community leaders.

DISABILITY INCLUSION: MADE IN GOD’S IMAGEAs Christ has welcomed and loved us, Anglican Aid seeks to strengthen communities to welcome and include people with disabilities. We work with projects that support families, provide healthcare and rehabilitation, and promote community advocacy.

The Karagwe Disability Program (also known as CBIDO) is run by the Anglican Diocese of Kagera. The program shows the love of God to people with disabilities in Tanzania by improving access to medical care, rehabilitation, education, and employment.

In Tanzania, people living with a disability suffer from discrimination and social isolation, and lack opportunities to break out of the poverty cycle.

One boy who the Karagwe Disability Program supported in the past year is 17 year old Justine, who lives with epilepsy.

‘Despite my child being bright and the love of school he has, he never had a chance to attend school due to his condition,’ said Justine’s mother.

Justine was identified by Karagwe Disabilities when a worker visited their village. He was treated with anti-epileptics medicine by a doctor. After several months he began to get better.

Karagwe Disabilities helped him begin training as a carpenter, and it was a joy to receive these words from Justine (at right).

Hope and Faith School Ngombe is a slum in Zambia’s capital city, Lusaka. Families live in close quarters and government provision of health, water, or education services is sorely lacking.

Hope and Faith Community School has a vision to provide holistic Christian education to vulnerable children in this community. Most of the 439 students are orphans or from very poor families, and would otherwise be spending their days on the street. Only 1% of students come from families where there is regular income.

February 2021 saw pupils arrive back at school after eleven months of COVID-19 lockdown, and students were brimming with excitement.

A holistic Christian curriculum and daily Bible devotions mean students can learn about God and grow in a relationship with him.

A feeding program guarantees students a daily hot meal, so they’re not distracted by hunger pangs during class.

After graduation from Grade 12, a number of students are sponsored through tertiary studies. For students who can’t access tertiary education, Hope and Faith School helps them with job-readiness by teaching courses in food production, marketing, tailoring, and computer studies.

EDUC ATION: BRE AKING CYCLES OF POVERT Y

Over the past year, Anglican Aid has supported 16 schools or other education projects around Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. These projects provide impoverished children with safe spaces to learn and grow so they can have a chance at a better future.

Good news for Good Shepherd School

Anglican Aid has been supporting the Good Shepherd School in Lebanon since 2016. With his wife Reem, Rev. Emil Bourizk established the school to care for impoverished Syrian children living in Lebanon. He had witnessed refugee children as young as 4 being forced to work as slave labourers in the fields.

Lebanon’s strict COVID-19 lockdowns were unimaginably difficult, with schools closing and many families losing their income. Teachers were able to stay in contact with students via WhatsApp and continue basic teaching in Arabic and Maths - although many children lack access to technology.

But since the lifting of restrictions, God has been abundantly gracious to the Good Shepherd School, with the school seeing great growth in recent months.

In 2018, the school had 80 students, many only able to attend for a few months per year. Now there are over 200 children attending daily classes!

“It seems that all of a sudden, everything that we have been praying for is finally being answered,” said Emil.

“Most importantly, for the first time ever, I can see that our teachers are becoming real disciples to our great Lord and master.”

“The lockdown was also an opportunity to concentrate on discipling some families who are more open to hearing the Word of God and help them to trust that God is in control.”

In 2021 the school moved from its original location - a converted garage - to a nearby two-storey

building, where classrooms are more spacious.

As well as hosting the Good Shepherd school, the building will also be used for a ‘Faith Space’: a place for Christian fellowship and teaching. Emil and Reem Bourizk have gathered a community of Syrian refugees and Lebanese locals who are all exploring faith and are at different places on their journey towards faith in Jesus.

Anglican Aid provides emergency relief to communities devastated by drought, flood, famine and war. We work with trusted Christian organisations and local churches who are deeply involved in these communities. This creates meaningful and ongoing relationships.

India’s Covid emergencyAt the height of India’s pandemic crisis in April 2021, news reports showed that over 3,300 people were dying daily from the virus. Our partners on the ground described the situation as ‘a national emergency’.

Robert Kumar, Project Director for Community Health & Development, Herbertpur Christian Hospital, said, “We are facing big challenges due to overload. Hospitals are full and people are left with no choice except to put beds on the road and wait for admission.”

By God’s providence, Anglican Aid had an existing partnership with a hospital in India, who run the Anugrah project, a long-term development program for people with disabilities. When they were rapidly designated as a Covid hospital by the Indian government as a response to the Covid crisis, they reached out to Anglican Aid for help.

Thanks to your gifts to Anglican Aid’s India COVID-19 Emergency Appeal, we were able to send more than $250,000 for ventilators, an oxygen machine, personal protective equipment, and other essential medical supplies to Herbertpur Christian Hospital, and Nav Jivan Hospital in northern India, and our other partners in the region who needed support.

“We are profoundly grateful that we have you standing with us.”

- Robert Kumar

Fiji: Cyclones Yasa and AnaIn December 2020, Cyclone Yasa struck Fiji’s second largest island, Vanua Levu, with 345km winds. It was soon followed by Cyclone Ana which triggered damaging floods and landslides.

Your support in the wake of Cyclones Yasa and Ana provided emergency food and water supplies, temporary accommodation, and helped rebuild homes. But ongoing access to clean water remained a significant issue. Water infrastructure was damaged by the cyclones, and remaining water sources were polluted by runoff.

Anglican Aid is working with the Anglican Diocese of Fiji’s North Division to establish 10 rainwater tanks for local schools and parishes. This will provide a steady supply of clean water in communal locations, protecting villagers from waterborne diseases.

In the months since the cyclones, church membership in the south of Fiji has doubled! The Christians used to worship in the hurricane relief shelter, which is now too small to house them because of the growth in attendance.

“All I can say is that God has incredibly used Anglican Aid to advance the gospel. Though there are still some needs, we are continuing to thank God for all that has happened.” - Rev Joseph Swamy, Taveuni Methodist Church.

“The money [that] has come from Anglican Aid.... is a great help in rebuilding lives and bringing relief to many we are able to help. Thank you.”

- Henry Raymond Bull, Bishop of Vanau Levu Taveuni Unit, Assistant Bishop in Polynesia.

Care for BeirutThanks to your support, Anglican Aid contributed over $50,000 to assist people affected by the Beirut Port explosion of August 2020. A massive explosion tore through Beirut’s shipping district, with the equivalent force of a 3.5 magnitude earthquake. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced. Some densely-populated residential districts were totally destroyed.

Together with our partner, the Lebanese Society for Educational and Social Development (LSESD), churches in Beirut distributed meals, essential supplies like clothes and toothbrushes to those who lost their homes, and care packages of toys and activities for children. Most importantly, all this assistance was distributed through the local church, ensuring pastoral care accompanied the donations.

“These ministries would not have been possible without you. From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you for your receptiveness and responsiveness to the Holy Spirit’s prompting toward generosity. Please continue to pray for us as we pray for you.” - Nabil Costa, CEO, LSESD

HEALTH: A HOSPITAL FOR THE POOR Anglican Aid works with trusted Christian partners to deliver quality and affordable health care to families who would otherwise have little or no access to medical services. We provide essential nutrition to children, support rehab programs, and partner with hospitals and medical clinics.

Victoria Memorial Hospital, PakistanIt has been 6 years since building work began on the Victoria Memorial Hospital in Multan, Pakistan, in partnership with One2Another. Generous donations via Anglican Aid assisted in land acquisition, while our friends at Microlend assisted to develop the hospital.

On 28 February 2021, the Victoria Memorial Hospital was officially opened!

The hospital intentionally cares for poor and marginalised women, children, and patients that are terminally ill. No other facility in Multan offers a service for terminally ill people.

Anglican Aid is supporting staffing costs for doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. The hospital employs Christian staff who pray and read the Bible together each morning. They hope the hospital will be a witness to Christ’s love to the people of Pakistan.

INCOME GENER ATION: PROVIDING FOR FA MILIES THROUGH BEEKEEPING

Anglican Aid’s work equips people in poor communities with skills that bring reliable income to meet their families’ needs. We support activities like agricultural training, apprenticeship workshops, and small business loans.

Honeyworld Zimbabwe Anglican Aid partners with Honeyworld Zimbabwe to give communities a sustainable means of earning income through beekeeping. The organisation gives free professional beekeeping training services, and a free beehive to any participants eager to set up their own business.

Since beginning in 2016, the project has received 3 tonnes of honey from outgrowers, connecting locals with the export market. 105 people have begun beekeeping business through Honeyworld’s outgrower scheme.

In Zimbabwe, where inflation is rampant and many lack job security, beekeeping is a sustainable means to help outgrowers support their families. Several of Honeyworld’s outgrowers are pastors, whose congregations aren’t in a financial position to fully support their pastors through a reliable offertory.

LOVING CHILDREN: ALL ARE PRECIOUS IN HIS SIGHTChildren often bear the brunt of poverty, but Anglican Aid’s projects seek to give them hope for a better future. We promote the wellbeing of every child and help them realise their rights to education, strong and healthy families, and essential life skills.

Projek Bali Families - A new family-based care approach that’s giving children a brighter future

‘Widhya Asih’ meaning ‘Knowledge with Love’ is connected to the Christian Protestant Church of Bali. Widhya Asih shows Christ’s love to children who have lost one or both parents, who are at risk of experiencing neglect, abuse, or exploitation, or who otherwise wouldn’t be able to easily access education.

Their centre in Singaraja was the first to implement an extended Family-Based Care Program, helping keep families together. Until recently, Bali had one of the world’s highest rates of children in orphanages - many were commercial businesses set up to exploit children from impoverished families.

The centre provides nourishing meals, comprehensive healthcare, school stationery, equipment, and uniforms. It also offers learning support, traditional Balinese dancing lessons, and life-skills training for both adults and children (COVID restrictions permitting).

Over the last year, the Family-Based Care Program has grown and is now transforming the lives of 44 children. Their hard-working parents are fishermen, scavengers and labourers. It empowers families living below the poverty line to care for and educate their children, instead of giving them up to institutional care.

VALUING WOMEN: STABILITY AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR VULNERABLE WOMEN

Anglican Aid demonstrates Christ’s love and affirmation by supporting holistic projects that value women. This work encompasses crisis accommodation, income-generation skills, girls’ education, support for families, and more.

At Bangalore Women’s Safe House in India, women are able to find refuge from seriously violent family members. The Safe House is run by Christian women who provide care to women and children regardless of race, caste, creed, or religion.

Diya* has lived at the Safe House since she was in Primary School, after fleeing her abusive and alcoholic father. This year, with the help of Anglican Aid supporters, Diya will be graduating high school and is seeking enrolment at a local college. She dreams of being a teacher.

In Diya’s hometown, it’s common for women’s work to be confined to the house. Many girls and women abandon any educational opportunities they are given due to the obligations they have in the home.

Without the support of the team at Bangalore, it’s likely that Diya would not have the chance to go to college. The Safe House provided Diya a stable environment to grow up in, and allowed her to access counselling as needed. They have also given her some valuable work experience, through offering her a part time job teaching little ones in their infants education program.

Diya hopes to one day teach at a government school in her hometown, to offer poor Dalit [low caste]children a chance at a better life. Having come from that background, this is very significant for her and her community.

WASH: WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENEWithout clean water, it is close to impossible to achieve any other outcomes – ministry or development. Anglican Aid’s projects bring clean, life-giving water, as well as hygiene education, to communities who desperately need it, all in the name of the one who gives living water: Jesus.

Niassa Water and SanitationAnglican Aid has provided $10,000 to fund three new boreholes in the Zambezia Province of Mozambique, improving the living standards of 5000 rural villagers. The work continues in nearby villages.

Collecting water should never put someone’s life at risk. But that’s what happened to Luisa’s three daughters when they shared a dirty water source with wild animals.

“I had five children, but my three daughters have already died. One was caught by a crocodile while trying to collect water from the river, and the others died from cholera, a waterborne disease. Before the borehole, we would travel long distances to fetch water from the river.”

“But things have changed, because now we can get pure water from the borehole. Today the only people who go to the river are fishermen. This borehole has changed my life. I have time to do other tasks instead of travelling long distances to collect water.”

Collecting water should never get in the way of kids going to school. But that’s what happened to countless children like Carla, before clean water arrived in her village.

“I am the only girl in our family so I help my mother with a lot of household chores. In past years I missed a lot of school because I was very busy with housework, mainly collecting water. I was always tired.”

“Today water is within our community, I am at school on time, and my classes are going well. God heard our lamentations. I’m very thankful.”

When the local church brings access to clean water, a flood of blessings follow: fewer waterborne illnesses, less deaths, better nutrition, more kids in school, and more time for parents to look after a farm or business.

Below left: Francisco, the Chief Community Leader of Morrumbala District, Mozambique opens the new borehole.

AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITY CARE Anglican Aid’s Community Care projects directly resource and empower churches in the Sydney Diocese to run their own ministry programs for vulnerable and disadvantaged people in their community.

The Jesus Club ministry has been running since 2006 with the aim of making Jesus Christ known amongst people with intellectual disabilities across Greater Sydney. Anglican Aid has partnered with Jesus Club since 2017 as they help churches establish Bible teaching and genuine friendship with people who have an intellectual disability.

William lives with autism and from a young age has struggled with controlling his emotions, and has experienced seizures and mental health difficulties.

Kate, William’s mother, longed for her son to grow in knowing and trusting God. William has been attending Jesus Club Newtown for the past two years. He is learning about Jesus and the Bible in a way he can understand.

The pandemic has been difficult for William and has caused him a lot of anxiety, with familiar routines turned upside down. One week on Zoom, William began vocalising. The leaders realised he wanted to ask God to end the pandemic.

Once his request was on the screen, William became calm. During prayer he joined the others in silence. It was a miracle for William to be so calm and focused, connecting with God in a way he couldn’t in his everyday life.

THE ARCHBISHOP OF SYDNEY’S ANGLICAN AID

ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT FOR YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2020

FINANCIAL SUMMARYAnglican Aid’s financial reports are presented differently this year following our voluntary withdrawal from ACFID. We have presented combined reports for the Overseas Relief and Aid Fund (“Overseas Development”) and Anglican Aid, reflecting that most funds go to partners overseas, while noting support to Australian projects. The Overseas Ministry Fund report is presented separately.

The aggregate income for all funds administered by Anglican Aid for the financial year ended June 2021 was $5,934,702, an increase of $5,000 on the previous year. Income included $410,000 in government grants (JobKeeper and Cashflow Boost) and the launch of the Bible College Student Sponsorship program also contributed significantly to revenue. A number of major donors also made significant donations in the last year.

Total funds sent to overseas and Australian partners were $4,806,473 against total expenses of $5,797,885 meaning that 76% of the total expenditure was received by our partners. Project related costs of 7% were applied to manage our vast range of programs well. Accountability, administration and fundraising accounted for 17% of costs. This highlights Anglican Aid’s careful use of our supporters’ gifts for which we are stewards.

Adequate financial reserves are retained for future commitments in each fund. The charts shown here have been provided on the basis of the combined figures in the three audited financial statements.

The full audited accounts for each fund may be accessed on the Anglican Aid website at https://anglicanaid.org.au/financials/ and viewed on the ACNC website after 30 November 2021 at https://www.acnc.gov.au/ by entering in the ABN for each fund in the ‘Search for a Charity’ section.
