Open Photoshop. Go to Edit>Preferences>Performance. Where issays "History && Cache" Change the history states to "1000".Chances are you will mess up A LOT and you want to be able to goas far back as you need to. Press OK.

Go to File>Open and locate your file.

enough to see the skin texture and it's at 72 pixels per inch. So eitherway… make what choice you feel is best.

Create a New Layer

Click on the background layer. Use the selectiontool to select the image on the backgroundlayer. Select Layer 1 and paste the image. Namethe Layer.

You should currently have two layers. ABackground Layer, and the Original Layer on top of it.

Eyes

, select one eye. You want a large portion of theeye and the face around it as seen below.

Click Ctrl+C andthen Ctrl+V(copy/paste) topaste the eye ontoanother layer.

After painstakingresearch, I havediscovered thecalculation for theeyes. I have testedthis method usingthe actors fromAvatar and theirNa'vied selvesand these stepsseem correct.

Still on that eyelayer, go to

Edit>Free Transform or Ctrl+T to open the FreeTransform tool.

Change the Width, Height, and Rotate numbersto that shown below. If you are working on theright eye (the one I'm working on) then you

rotate the eye -10. If you're working on the left eye, it's +10.

Select Eraser Tool . With the settings shown below, erase aroundthe eye just enough that it blends in. Try to erase as little as

possible.

Repeat for other Eye.

Select the Eyes Layer and the Original Copyand hit Ctrl+E. Duplicating and merging layersis necessary when working on something likethis. If you mess up, you need a back up copy. Ire-named the file as "manipulated".

Now you have the original image and the"manipulated" one. We will continue to workwith the Manipulated Layer.

Eye Brows

Select the Patch tool

Drag the selection to a large openarea of skin (such as the forehead

or cheek).

Select Eraser tooland erase the skinaround the eyebrow so that itlooks moreblended. TheOriginal imagewill show throughas you erase.

If You have Hairin the Way:

Change the opacity to 10%, hold Alt, and click on a large area ofplain skin (again I used the forehead). Use this tool on the eye browa couple times to make it look like there is more skin.

Skin Color

The Na'vi skin has blue-green skin withpurple-blue undertones. I tried to create thislook by making a couple layers of color. Createa new layer and fill it in blue. I'm using color#00407f. Change the Blending Mode to HardLight.

Create another Layer, color it Blue as well. I'musing #00819b. Change the Blending Mode toOverlay.

This will bring alight blue light to

the face. Of course you can adjust the colorlayers if you do not like the effect. I usually useHue/Saturation and play with it a bit.

Nose Shape

This is the hardest part because the Na'vi nosehas a very unique look. Creating it depends onthe angle of your picture.

The nose curvesat the top,creating a littlebulge if you arelooking at it fromthe front. I haveoutlined thecurves of the noseand how the eyebrow is a littledeeper than mosthumans. Thecircle is where thebulge is. Also,notice how thecurves of the nosemeet up with the

eye. The more youstudy this and

take the anatomy into mind, the more Na'vi-like the face and nosewill be!

Duplicate the Manipulated Layer. Create a new Layer and make sure

it's placed at the top of all the layers.

Select a color that is easy to see (I used Yellow)and mark the same parts of the nose and eyesas I did. The little dot under the nose is going tobe where the new nose ends, eye ball thisaccording to your references of the nose.

Click on the Manipulated Copy, go toFiler>Liquify. In the Liquify menu, locate andclick on "Show Backdrop". And Change thesetting to the following.

And carefully take the darkshadows of bridge of theeyes, and move them to meetup with the Yellow marks:

Do not worry about thesquished eyes.

Make the brush abit smaller. Takethe light from thecenter of the noseand moved it upto create a"bump". This

should also deepen the brow just a little bit.

Zoom into the bottom of the nose. Change the settings as shownbelow:

Stretch the bottom of the nosedown to the yellow dot.

Adjust the light from the tip of the nose so that it is down and spreadout a little bit more. Move the point of the nose lower.

Click Ok. Erase the squished eyes delicately sothat the eyes from the Manipulated Layer belowcome through. Be careful not to erase the creasewe just made from the Liquify. I find turning offthe blue helps.

Pupil Size

Select the Pen tool and outline the pupil

Right click in theselection andselect "MakeSelection…".

Select the Manipulated Layer and turn thePupils Layer off

Filter>Liquify. Uncheck "Show Backdrop" andadjust to the settings show below. The BrushSize should have a similar size relation to theeye as what I have. Select the Bloat Tool andslightly bloat the eye so that the bottom half is alittle fuller, trying not to affect the upper lid.

And lastly, select the Paint Brush tool and carefully paint in extralong lashes. This takes patience… alternatively; you can use the

pen tool if you don't have a tablet.

Lips

Select the Burn tool and slightly burn the side of the noseupwards to appear more cat-like

I also used the Clone toolwith Opacity set to 10% andlightened the bottom of thenose a bit by selecting thearea of skin right below thenose, and stroking along thedark areas.

Select the Burn tool onceagain and change thesetting that shown below.The dark streak on the noseis always right below thepointiest part of the tip.

If the lips have lip gloss orlipstick: I suggest taking some of

that shine away.

On the manipulatedBlueLayer, use the Eyedroppertool to select the color Blueused on the skin. Select thePaint Brush tool Lower theOpacity to 12% and swipesome blue over the lips.

Select the Burn tool andwith the following settings,

darken the darkest area of lips (where the lips meet) to put thecontrast back in.

darken some of the creases in the lips if youwant more contrast.

Use the Dodgetool at a lowopacity to make

littlehighlights on each side ofthe crease. I made moredetail with Clone Tool aswell.

Create a New Layer. Selectthe Paint Brush tool. Locatethe Skin Brushes you

loaded earlier and select theone that says "330". Lowerthe Opacity to 50%, Select adark blue color (I'm using #08213e) and click once oneach side of the nose.

Make a New Layer, select Paint Brush tool.Locate the Skin Brushes and select the fourthone. With a Light Blue color (I'm using #008fff)click once on the nose.

Face

There are several ways of handling this. I prefer contrast, and enjoyusing the shiny skin of the Na'vi in all my manipulations. Their skinis smooth and slick… reflecting a little more light than the humanface.

Duplicate the manipulatedBlue layer. Leave the rest of the layers asthey are in case you want to change them later.

Select the Dodge tool, and with the settingsbelow, put in highlights where the light touchesreflects off the face. Adjusting brush sizes forthe area your working on.

Eye Brows (Na'vi Style)

Remember that the Na'vihave very organic features.The eye brows taper at theends, so no matter whatyour original eye browshape is, try to keep inmind that the end shouldprobably be pointy.

Create a New Layer. Turnoff the "Blue" layers. Use thePen tool to trace the EyeBrows. When the paths areboth closed, right click andselect "Make Path". Accept

the default settings.

Following the contours of the face, and make the stripes slightlylonger than the hair line.

I put a guide in the middle of the face so I knewwhere to stop. To do this go to View>NewGuide. Click on Vertical. Click Ok. Look to theLEFT and drag the guide to the center of theface.

Repeat theprocess used forthe face stripes.The bodystripes arelarger andrequire a bit ofcreativity whendealing with thesize shape. Theone's I'mmaking are verybasic.

You need thecolor of the face stripes. Go to

the Stripes Layer,change theopacity to"Normal" and usethe Eye Dropperwhere the color isthe most opaqueor the darkest.

Neck

Na'vi have very long necks. You can change the length in a numberof ways. I used the Liquify tool to push the shoulders down in thisimage. Brush Density and Pressure should be 100% and make thebrush size relative to the figure as I have done. Pull straight down.

There are a coupleof tutorials on theinternet that tellyou how to turnyour own ear intoa Na'vi ear.Personally, Iprefer to use earsfrom officialimages.

Find a picture thatshows most of theear. You need avery large, highquality image.

showedthe flow of howthe ears areplaced. Where thelines taper offtowards the rightside of the face, iswhere the tip ofthe ear should be. Look at as manyNa'vi images asyou can anddecide where youfeel the ear wouldlook best.

Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation and adjust the color to matchthe skin tone.

Erase the edge so that it blends in with the hair.

Burn the ear toadjust the

amount of lightthat hits it.

Merge the two ear layers.

Hair

You can keep your naturalhair, find some braided hairon the internet, or integratesome braids and feathersinto your regular hair. Makeyour Na'vi unique!

Select the Clonetool, hold Alt andclick on an area ofhair. Use the toolto clone away anybits of the originalear.

Create a NewLayer and Changeits Blending Modeto Color. Selectthe Paint Brushtool, and with the

settings below, paint over the hairwith a foreground color of Black.
