The Indiana University Libraries' web site envisions the Scholars' Commons as:

a vibrant, attractive central-campus space dedicated to technologies and services that support scholarship and scholarly community. This facility features cutting-edge technologies, timely seminars, and consultation opportunities with experts on tools, collections, and innovative approaches that further research in the humanities, arts, sciences, and social sciences. In addition to a cohesive set of technologies and services, the IU Scholars’ Commons will be a flexible space for building community and sparking interdisciplinary inquiry.

RESEARCH NOW: WHY?

The first-year frontline Scholars' Commons staff will work to develop a comprehensive overview of methods, techniques, and tools leveraged for digital scholarship, and how those methods, techniques and tools rely on broader research practices, cultivating a vibrant research community on the first floor of the East tower.

technologies.

RESEARCH NOW: WHAT?

Praxis-based, 12-18 month professional development initiative that began in November 2013 in which we will:

• gain core experience with and basic knowledge of concepts, issues, tools, and technologies associated with most, if not all, the main Scholars' Commons service areas

• cultivate our own research interests in the context of building a digital archive (see next slide) in order to effectively partner in future digital scholarship projects with faculty & grad students

• emerge from this experience ready to advance training with the next round of Scholars' Commons staff

To do this, we needed to create a comprehensive training program.

The History of the Indiana University Libraries project is conceived as a comprehensive, multimedia digital archive documenting the earliest days of the IU Libraries through present times.

The project will serve as an engaged learning opportunity as we enhance our skills and knowledge in preparation for the opening of the Scholars’ Commons

The project will:• consolidate two web sites that cover the history of the IU Libraries by

migrating the existing content into services such as Archives Online, Image Collections Online, and other services for long-term digital preservation and access

• digitize and describe existing content (35 mm slides, photographs, manuscripts, newspaper clippings and other ephemeral materials and objects) held by Lou Malcomb

• cross-reference existing digital content about the libraries’ history from related resources and repositories

• identify, digitize, and describe additional materials in existing repositories across campus

• create and compile original primary and secondary source contextual information by way of oral histories, essays, timelines and chronologies, biographical sketches, bibliographies, and other related information

Above all, this is a learning project for frontline Scholars' Commons staff with three broad goals:

• to understand the multi-faceted dimensions, iterations and phases involved in designing and developing a curated digital archive• to contribute to this project as researchers and

develop our research skills• to promote and encourage continuing education
