They’re ouand they don’t
First in ared-hot paranormal
romantic trilogy
Kings of Le on / “Crawl”
Angel Burn opens with Alex
driving into town in his Porsche
Carrera — handsome, aloof, and
totally cool. This song kicks off the
soundtrack with something mascu-
line, edgy, and fast-paced.
Laura Marling / “Rambling Man”
As the perspective in the novel
switches to Willow, so does
the contrast between her and
Alex with a soft, feminine song.
However, just like Willow, this
track also has a strong, fearless
quality.
Biffy Clyro / “Many of Horror”
This song starts off tentatively butbuilds to a dramatic crescendo, like
the blossoming romance between
Alex and Willow.
Kasabian / “Fire”
A great driving track; you can
imagine Alex and Willow cruising
through the desert in their bat-
tered old Mustang listening to this
languid but rocking tune.
The Pretty Reckless / “Make Me
Wanna Die”
This song is about the lengths that
a girl would go to for the guy she
loves — a great t for the scenes in
the book where Willow uses her
strength and determination to saveAlex’s life.
Florence + the Machine / “Cosmic
Love”
An epic, theatrical love song,
chosen to show the depth of
feeling between Alex and Willow
as they begin to realize how much
they mean to each other.
Jade Gallagher / “Iris”
This is a gentle love song to accom-pany the quiet time that Alex and
Willow spend together at Al ex’s
camp, gradually getting to know
each other.
Muse / “Time Is Running Out”
As Alex races against time to reach
the Church of Angels Cathedral in
Denver, time is literally running out
for Willow.
Jimmy Eat World / “Hear You
Me”
In this song, the lyrics are from
the point of view of a guy who is
losing the love of his life.
Fireight / “Forever”This song is about a girl who is
struggling to survive. She feels like
she’s drowning, choking, and then
the person she loves is reaching
out to help her.
Queens of the Stone Age / “Go
With The Flow”
Despite everything they’ve been
through, Alex and Willow can’t
rest. The Church of Angels is still
after them, and this is a great,fast-paced song to nish on as they
race off into the sunset.

Your depiction of angels is interesting and unusual. Where did the idea come from?
I was standing in a bookstore one day, looking at all the nonction books aboutangels, and I suddenly thought, whatif angels aren’t what they seem? Whatif they have their own agenda, and areactually beings to be feared instead of admired? Angel Burn happened very quickly after that!
Can you introduce us to your main characters, Alex and Willow, and tell us a little about what happens to them in the book?
The premise of the book is that angels,
far from being benign and compassionatebeings, are actually alien creatures who arepreying on humanity. Alex is a seventeen- year-old Angel Killer, part of a covert CIA group and one of the few people who knowsthe truth about angels in our world. He’sbeen trained from childhood to hunt downand kill angels.
Willow is a sixteen-year-old psychicmist, thought of as “Queen Weird” by her peers in the small New York town where she’s from. Unbeknownst to her, she’s actually half angel, and she might be
the key to destroying the angels once andfor all.
When Alex is ordered to kill Willow,he realizes that all is not what it seems. An epic road trip follows, where they mustsomehow avoid being killed while they try to work out why the angels want Willow dead. Along the way, the hunter and thehunted nd themselves falling in love.
Can you tell us more about Alex and Willow’sroad trip? Is it inspired by a personal experi-ence? Which stop was your favorite?
When the story rst came to me, I justsort of knew, instantly, that Willow was
from upstate New York and that Alex wasfrom New Mexico, and that a lot of thebook was going to be a journey from oneplace to the other. Although I’ve traveled afair amount in the United States, that par-ticular journey wasn’t one that I had donebefore I wrote Angel Burn— though I diddo it last year, retracing Alex and Willow’sroute as part of my research. I LOVEDthe panhandle of Texas, which they passthrough. I didn’t expect to — all I had ever heard about it was t hat it’s hot and at —but it turned out to be the most amazing
A Conversation with L. A. Weatherly
About L. A. WeatherlyL. A. Weatherly is the author of several books for young adults, including Child X. About Angel Burn, she says, “I’ve known Alex for a long time. He rst came to me as a character almost twenty yearsago, when he was a thief in a fantasy setting — an expert with knivesrather than guns. Nothing came of that particular novel, but Alexalways stayed with me. He refused to go away, in fact! And over the years, I began to wonder about redoing his story completely andplacing him in a contemporary setting.”
Willow knows she’s different fromother girls, and not just because sheloves tinkering with cars. Willow hasa gift. She can look into the future andknow people’s dreams and hopes, their sorrows and regrets, just by touching
them. She has no idea where this power comes from. But the assassin, Alex, does.Gorgeous, mysterious Alex knows moreabout Willow than she does about herself. He knows that her powers link to darkand dangerous forces, and that he’s one of the few humans left who can g ht them.
But when Alex nds himself falling inlove with his sworn enemy, he discov-ers that nothing is as it seems, leastof all good and evil. In the rst bookin an action-packed romantic trilogy,
L. A. Weatherly sends readers on a thrill-ride of a road trip — and depicts the
human race at the brink of a future as catastrophic as it is deceptively beautiful.
