Anette Balestrand Architecture Portfolio 2012
About Me:My name is Anette Balestrand and I am a senior Architecture stu-dent at Wentworth Institute of Technology. I moved to the United States at the age of thirteen. I still speak Norwegian and I visit my family in Norway every year. My heritage is very important to me, and something that will never leave my life.
My designs are definitely influenced from my childhood in Norway. I have a passion for sustainable design and I have an awkward draw towards wood as a material. Nature has always played a large role in every one of my designs. Growing up with a clean forest to play in has made me truly appreciate the wonders of nature.
With a concentration in Built Environment, my designs are based on the understanding of the existing social and physical context of a site. These ideas are explored in different medias, from sketching to models to final digital drawings. Every project begins with an in-depth site analysis, which drives the design through to the finish.
PROCESS is what my designs are all about. To have a meaningful finished project, there has to have been a process. That is what drives every design. I will work through an entire roll of trace for a project, every idea; every challenge is always worked through either in drawing or model. Every idea is tested to ensure it is consistent with the original intent of the design. This is something I believe in, and will always stay true to.

The design is about a narrative of temporary and permanent, a pushing and pulling relationship. The design explores ways for nature and people to work together to enhance a persons understanding of nature and create a learning environment and experience unlike any other place.
