– New states allowed all white men to vote

• Patronage– He replaced more federal workers than

anyone before him

• Limited government– He believed that the federal gov’t should not

interfere with people’s liberty

Tariff of 1828

• Heavy taxes on imports– Benefited North; South paid higher taxes

• South Carolina nullified the tariffs– Defying federal law

• Pres. Jackson– Would send in troops to enforce tax collection

The Bank War

• Jackson vetoed bill to recharter the Bank of the United States– Viewed bank as controlled by small group of

wealthy eastern elite

• Jackson removed federal money – Deposited in banks around the U.S.

• Led to overprinting of paper money– Led to depressions in 1837 and 1839
