Stories of Origin

Moses, a descendent of Abraham, brought the Ten Commandments down from Mt. Sinai which are the laws Jews must live by.

Abraham, Father of all Jews, started the idea of monotheism.

David, was a powerful Jewish king, made the capital of Israel, Jerusalem.

King David defeats Goliath with a sling and stones.

Abraham preparesto sacrifice his son,Isaac.

Moses bringing TenCommandments tothe people.

Core BeliefsMezzuzah

• This Mezzuzah has a small prayer that says to only believe in one God

• Written in Hebrew• Put on doors of Jewish homes

• Jewish tombs are unique• Jews must bury the dead within 5

days or less• Olam Ha Ba is the afterlife which

means “The World to Come”.

Kosher lifestyle • Kashrut is a set of biblical dietary restrictions• Certain foods cannot be eaten• Certain foods must be separated• Certification makes it easier to identify kosher food•Cannot mix meat and dairy

• The Torah is written in Hebrew• It is Judaism’s most sacred text• Each one is specially made and ishandwritten and very expensive• Contains the first 5 Books of

• 3rd section of the Jewish Bible• It means “Writings”• Contains a lot of religious

expression like poetry and philosophy

• Carved in stone• Contains the rules God wants the

Jews to follow• Given to Moses on Mt. Sinai by

God

Symbols and Objects

• Worn on heads during prayer• Symbol of respect for God• Also known as Yarmulke• Signifies that you should depend

on God and he is above you

• Blown on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and other Holidays

• Made of a ram’s horn• Used to wake people up and

remind you to ask for forgiveness for your sins

• Also called, Shield of David• Symbol of Judaism• Named after King David because legend tells that he had the star on his shield- Relatively new symbol to Judaism- Popular for about the last 200 years

• Becoming a grown up and following the laws of Jewish faith.

• Age 13 for boys, Bar Mitzvah• Age 12 for girls, Bat Mitzvah• Means Son/daughter of the

Commandments• Ceremony includes reading from the Torah• Bride and groom sign contract or ketubah• before wedding promising to always care

for each other• Wedding ceremony held under a canopy or

Chupah representing the home that bride and groom will create together

• Gold ring put on bride’s finger, rabbi blessing and groom breaks wine glass under foot

• Body washed, wrapped in sheet, put in coffin and quickly buried in Jewish cemetery

• Family mourn at home for 1 week• Hebrew books and Torah sometimes buried • with dead person

• Celebrates the Jewish New Year• Shofar is blown 100 notes per day• You eat apples and honey because it’s

sweet and it grants you a “sweet year”

 •Means “Day of Atonement”•You ask God to forgive you for your sins (atone for sins)•Relax and is completely Shabbat•Probably most important holiday for Jews•You fast for 25 hours straight with no drinking or eating

• Means Festival of Lights• Light candles on menorah each night for 8 days

Hanukkah in Hebrew means dedication and celebrates the rededication of the Temple after the destruction by the Syrian Greeks

• Less important Holiday for Jews• Sometimes kids play the Dreidel game• Symbolizes the Eternal Light which comes from the legend

that the Temple light remained lit for 7 days with only enough oil for 1
