COOPER HEWITT SMITHSONIAN DESIGN MUSEUM [WITH DS+R]

In close collaboration with the museum Diller Scofidio and Renfro devised a program for the museum’s master plan as well as for the first and second floor exhibits.

The public face of the mansion will be revitalized with the illumination of its historical piers on 5th Avenue, and for the first time visitors will be able to enter into the mansion gardens under a new entrance canopy on 90th Street. The former Carnegie art gallery is appropriated for the new museum shop, and the new admissions desk in the Great Hall is emblematic of the museum’s unique position to juxtapose contemporary design objects against the Mansion’s architectural fabric. With the third-floor gallery expansion, an opportunity was created to use the first- and second-floor galleries to showcase Cooper Hewitt’s vast and diverse permanent collection. After extensive, back and forth discussions with the curators and conservators about how the collections should be shown, we utilized new technologies and designed a variety of adaptable, modular display systems with a kit-of-parts infrastructure to highlight the collection within the challenging confines of its historic context.

TOWER D HUDSON YARDS [WITH DS+R]

The 70-story residential tower, comprising half rental and half condominium units, anchors the southeast corner of Hudson Yards East at 30th Street and 11th Avenue. While the characteristic feature of many tall buildings is an iconic top, D Tower is defined by its distinctive middle. A network of crisscrossing straps cinches the tower at its mid-section, squeezing the rectilinear lower half of the building into a curvaceous upper half. tThe tower is designed to LEED gold standards.

Page 6: Andreas Buettner

MERCEDES BENZ MUSEUM OF THE FUTURE [COMPETITION WITH DS+R]

In April 2012 Mercedes Benz invited DS+R amongst 8 high profile international design firms to participate in a competition for a new future brand complex. The client’s program included the need for interactive presentations, experiential spaces and an art collection open to the public. The new program also needs to be in dialogue with the Mercedes Benz Museum (UN Studio) and the Mercedes Benz Center. The visitor experiences an elevated conscience for distance travelled, speed reached, time passed and energy used. The theme of the parti addresses urban order

and infrastructure, landscape and architecture, sustainability and individual mobility.A new campus piazza forms the center between the four parts of the campus. The existing museum and the Future Center make a pair at the campus entrance. The identity of the Future Center develops from three elements: the public piazza connected to the amphitheatre and the top of the building, spaces for education and learning, and the future center with a coreographed procession from the near future to the far future.

BOSTON WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT [WITH DS+R]

DS+R engaged with a premier developer in the concept design of a 10 5 unit residential development on the Boston Harbor waterfront. Expansive views and the adjacency to the Institute for Contemporary Art made this project attractive to the DS+R studio. The team developed 2 schemes addressing the pro-forma of the developer whilst seizing the site opportunities.

ZLITEN UNIVERSITY, Libya [WITH RMJM]Located approximately 7 kilometers south of the coastal city of Zliten, the campus will serve as a living / learning environment focused on the study of Islamic religion and law. The 82-hectare cam-pus will be designed for an initial student enroll-ment of 2,800 that can grow to more than 4,000 with housing for 3,500 students and faculty.

While the site is bound on the east and west by roads, the campus is oriented along the Qibla line - towards Mecca. Core academic functions are organized in 4 quad-rants within a 220-meter square with a perimeter wall that contains faculty offices and academic support functions.

Page 9: Andreas Buettner

OZYEGIN UNIVERSITY, Istanbul, Tur-key [WITH RMJM]

Design for a new campus on 3 parcels in Istan-bul: the largest of the three parcels provides the location for the core campus functions: Student Services and Campus Life, the Library / Learning Center and Technology Hub, and core Adminis-trative functions. The design team developed a series of concepts for the three parcels that now form the core for the 5,000 student campus: a distinct organizing theme and response to the site, context, visual character and micro-climate were evaluated.

Three residential towers with 550 units; located at the South-east corner of Park Central in Inchon, Korea. Prescriptive placement of the towers re-lated to set backs and orientation. The client re-inforced his desire to plan for shallow units which would allow for cross ventilation.

MD-1 LAB BUILDING NUS, Singapore [WITH RMJM]

This new building for the National University of Singapore combines lab spaces and research-ers offices with large and small group instruction spaces on 130,000 SM over 25 floors. The next step after MD-6 in a multiphase devel-opment of the 40-year-old National University of Singapore campus, the project’s central scheme is a vertical atrium which provides natural ventila-tion and offers opportunities for a collaborative environment. The building will be connected on various floor to the adjacent Vivarium, to the Yoon Long Lin Medi-cal school building and to future developments. A spacious multi level lobby continues the lush landscaping into the heart of the building. The exterior of the lab tower required special attention to achieve a high quality brand image as well as to satisfy strict environmental perfor-mance parameters.

TIMUR APA OFFICE, Istanbul, Turkey [WITH RMJM]

APA OFFICE TOWER Concept Design Proposal for Timur Real Estate Development Building Investments, Inc.

Site Building Analysis SustainabilityThe new Timur office development is planned in the north-eastern section of Istanbul on the European side of the Bosporus. The site is located in east of the Buyukdere Caddesi adjacent to the Levent and Ortabayir development. This district consists of high-end residential, retail (most notably the Kanyon mall) and class-A office buildings.

The district and the site are easily accessible by car from Buyukdere Caddesi and by public transportation via the Levent Metro stop.

The diamond shaped site has 30m street frontage along Ali Kaya Street and is approximately 50m deep adjacent to another site. Setback lines are approximately 5M to adjacent sites and 10M to the street curb according to the information provided by Timur.

The Timur competition brief asks for a double height lobby with a mezzanine. Above the lobby 10 floors with mezzanines and 4-5 penthouses are planned. RMJM recommends to evaluate together with the client the commercial value of the mezzanine floors versus regular floors.

As the site slopes by 6M from East to West, the first 2 basement floors can make use of natural light and become additional office spaces and meeting rooms. Below that there will be 4 levels of parking, accessed by a ramp on the north side of the property.

The RMJM design team envisions this new office building as a development which fulfills the highest standards in regard to efficiency, sustainability and architectural quality.

Design features such as raised floor system, exposed concrete ceilings, smart light controls, high performance envelopes etc. should be considered.

The team evaluated different core options and recommends an elongated side core with 4+1 or 2+1 elevators on the north side of the building. The penthouse floors should be accessed by a dedicated elevator.

Two egress stairs with sufficient distance towards each other will be required. An option with a scissor stair is also shown; the Istanbul code should be reviewed to ensure whether a scissor stair is permissible or not.

The core will provide the necessary shear walls and will also accommodate bathrooms, kitchenettes and conference rooms. As the typical floor-to-floor height

is 7m the mezzanine floor should be a light weight, steel frame structure hung from the structural members of the floor above. This will reduce the overall weight of the structure and allows for column free spaces.

From the information given RMJM understands that the current FAR (Emsal) for the site is 2.5 and that the area for the ground floor is not to exceed 50% of the overall site area.

The following design proposals use the information given in the Timur design brief and most likely will require a variance.

is 7m the mezzanine floor should be a light weight, steel frame structure hung from the structural members of the floor above.

RMJM is committed to being a leader in Sustainable Design. We welcome the challenge of designing buildings that meet our modern needs for shelter and services, nourish our cultural and spiritual desires, and preserve to the greatest degree possible the finite resources of our planet.

Energy efficiency, passive solar design, environmental quality initiatives, and attention to materials selection are evident throughout the RMJM portfolio. Our focus on sustainable design issues and high-performance design strategies demonstrates our commitment to building better, building smarter and building more responsibly.

RMJM uses the LEEDT methodology and rating system. RMJM has forty four (44) LEEDT accredited professionals on staff and we are currently actively working on 12 projects that are registered and seeking LEED certification.

TIMUR HALIC RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT, Istanbul, Turkey [WITH RMJM]The design of the Haliç project, a complex urban site in Istanbul, requires a special set of skills and a deep understanding of how cities function. The site is situated in a manufacturing zone to the West of the old Eyup neighborhood. In the fu-ture, this neighborhood will transform to a new, dynamic, young district. The new development will be the first high-rise residential development in this industrial area. The design explores to use some of the available FAR for low-rise townhous-es by creating a garden atmosphere providing an opportunity for a courtyard for future residents. This study of the Haliç site was conducted in 2

parts: the analysis of the singular lot (#72) and the combined lots (#71 + #72) has led to 3+2 site and massing configurations. Each design approach has the potential to engage the specific site con-ditions and the development goals including easy site access, creation of public and private ameni-ties, achieving an iconographic design, financial viability, planning flexibility and sustainability.

HUAWEI R&D CAMPUS, Wuhan, China [WITH RMJM]

The design of the new Huawei R&D campus in Wuhan draws upon a unique sense of place by echoing the notion of a cultivated landscape and gathering it’s own community along a central landscaped valley form. A strong focus has been placed upon the sensi-tive integration of buildings within a landscaped campus environment. Echoing traditional Chi-nese building typologies, the blurring of inside and outside spaces through a series of court-yards and partially enclosed gardens will en-sure a harmony between architectural and land-scaped environments. The planning of the R&D facility at both a site

and building level has put the highest priority on operational issues. . The typical linear typology developed will allow research teams to adapt to the changing demands of the technology market and will ensure that the buildings adapt to the future. Efficiency has been core to the develop-ment of the architecture also, both in terms of reducing energy consumption through careful sustainable design and reducing cost through an understanding of simple, robust and practical building designs
