WEEKLY REMINDERSWeek 3 Term 3 2020

PLEASE AVOID COVID COMPLACENCY ...Dear FamiliesWhile life has returned a little closer to normality here in the West, continuing to practise good hygiene and physical distancing is essential during this time. All West Australians are being urged to remain vigilant and cooperative.

Until a vaccine is developed, which is still in all likelihood, many months or more away, the best way to remain safe is to keep observing the simple safety messages around personal hygiene and physical distancing.

If you or your children have any symptoms of a fever or a respiratory tract infection, no matter how mild, please stay at home, contact your GP, arrange to be tested, and keep us all here at school, well informed.

ST EMILIE’S SCHOOL and COVID -THINGS STILL NEED TO BE DIFFERENT

While some events have returned to the school calendar this term, we continue to be challenged by trying to ensure social distancing is observed between parents onsite.

Unfortunately at the recent House Cross Country, many parents failed to observe appropriate social distancing guidelines. We understand that it is easy to temporarily forget and it can be frustrating not being able to connect with others in a way that is familiar and comfortable, however the government directive to observe two square metres distance is our current reality at this point in time, and it is a situation that calls for whole school cooperation and a shared sense of responsibility and care for ‘the other’.

While we all want things to ‘go back to normal’, unfortunately this is not possible at the moment. No-one has a crystal ball and the future is still unclear in terms of what may or may not play out in coming months. It is really important however, that each of us plays our part in making the events we attend here at school as safe as possible. As these are offered, we all need to be thinking about how we are individually and collectively observing social distancing expectations.

Your cooperation and understanding is, as always, very much expected and appreciated.

RegardsTania ThuijsPrincipal

Friday 14th August - School Disco (in large hall)

Kindy – Year 2 Disco Drop off 4.00pm to your child’s classroom

Pick Up 5.00pm sharp from your classroom

Year 3 – 6 DiscoDrop off 5:00pm to your child’s classroomPick Up 6:15pm to your child’s classroom

While we are looking forward to offering children the opportunity for fun and friendship at the disco, our biggest challenge has been considering managing the movement and congregation of parents, while maintaining social distancing requirements of 2 square metres.

After much discussion as a P&F Executive, we have settled on the following arrangements:

1. An disco admission price of $8.00 per child will include admission and a novelty bag containing:

- A bottle of water- A small packet of chips- A glow stick - and a freddo frog

These bags will be prepaid and handed to the child in the classroom, to take to the disco.

2. Kindy-Year 2 parents are invited to collect their children (and siblings) from the classroom door 2.20- 2.30pm if you wish, as this allows you to take children home to have some afternoon tea, have a shower, get dressed and have a rest before the disco. You will however, need to make sure you are offsite by 2.50pm before drive through begins, thank you.

3. At disco time, parents are to please drop their child to the classroom (see times above). Teachers and EA’s will escort children to the disco and at the end of the disco, return them to the classroom. Parents are to please collect children from the classroom, on time (see times above).

4. Drinks and nibbles - this will unfortunately not be offered this year as it is too difficult to ensure the social distancing. All things going well, we have decided to offer a Sundowner for parents in Term 4 when we hope there will be less restrictions and lovely weather!

5. The theme this year is ‘Dazzle Us’ - your child can dazzle our disco with colour, with creativity, with a dress up, with a sparkly top, or just your own disco outfit - in other words, they can wear anything :)

Helping Your Child Resolve Conflict and being a Good Friend

As much as we try to avoid it, conflict is a normal part of life. Helping children learn to manage conflict effectively will help them to experience more fulfilling friendships and enjoy better social experiences, both at school and outside of it. Of course, how well children are able to resolve conflict is directly related to their age, stage of development and life experiences – for example, a young child may not know how to compromise without assistance, or have the emotional capacity to empathise with the needs of others. Equipping children of all ages with the strategies below will help them become more effective at resolving conflict and being a good friend.

Tip #1: Learn to Manage Strong EmotionsWhile children have the right to feel strong emotions such as anger and frustration, it is important that they learn that yelling or being physically hurtful or intimidating does not help to resolve conflict. Helping children learn simple strategies for remaining calm, such as taking a deep breath or stopping and counting to ten is an important part of the process of effective conflict resolution.

Tip #2: Talk & ListenHelp your child to recognise the value of using words and speaking calmly to resolve conflict. Work together to develop a phrase that they can say to a friend to help start the resolution process, for example, “Let’s talk about this and find a way to work together.” Learning to say how they feel and what they wish would happen, rather than attributing blame and overly focusing on the cause of the conflict, are also great skills to have.

Being a good listener is also important. Helping children learn to listen to each other can be difficult, especially when they are very young or emotionally upset, and often when they are tired or upset, trying to talk it through will not work well. In these instances, it is often best to wait until your child is calm before proceeding with any positive conflict resolution strategies.

Tip #3: Problem Solve Initially children will need help to navigate the process of brainstorming potential solutions together, with the aim being to find a solution that makes everyone happy. For younger children, keep the options limited and simple. For older children, remind them that everyone has the right to be heard and that no idea is a silly idea.

Tip #4: Encourage FairnessTalk regularly with children about the benefits of being kind, being fair and sharing with others, and catch them doing the right thing as often as you can – rewarding positive examples with lots of verbal encouragement. While young children find it difficult to understand why they need to ‘take turns,’ they will often be more willing to share when encouraged to let the other child have a turn once they are done – this gives them a sense of control over the situation and the act of sharing, rather then it being something they are being directed to do by an adult or peer.

Tip #5: When Nothing Else WorksTeach your child that it is okay to walk away when nothing else works, and that they should feel safe to come to you, the teacher or another trusted adult to seek assistance resolving difficult situations.

Tip #6: Role Play Use role play to help your child feel more comfortable employing the strategies outlined above. Taking time to actually talk through and act out potential scenarios that might develop in the playground or on a playdate will help your child feel more confident to use these conflict resolution strategies as needed.

Tip #7: Encourage Imaginative PlayImaginative play provides a powerful safe haven for children to work through overwhelming emotions, to make sense of things they have seen, heard or learned from others, and for processing social interactions, including conflicts. Having the space, time and freedom to play imaginatively, provides children with a sense of power – they feel in control, capable of figuring things out, of thinking things through and solving problems. My girls both love playing with figurines and I regularly see elements of their real life experiences re-enacted in imaginative play.

Tip #8: Host Play DatesRegular play dates provide your child with real life opportunities to develop friendships and to use the strategies included above with your support, away from the stress of the school playground or other larger group setting.
