A journey of learning at Andiappan Yoga Ashram Intense yet calming. Exhausting yet energising. Exhilarating, and enjoyable. This is how Malaysian yoga instructor Tiara Tse described the 18 days of her Yoga Teacher Training, conducted at the Andiappan Yoga Ashram in Chennai, South India. “I have learned to be more self-aware of my body, mind and inner self,” she said. “[And] I have decided to further my journey in yoga by enrolling in the 200hrs Intensive Yoga Therapy Teacher Training Course to gain more knowledge in all aspects of yoga.” Tiara hopes to run her own yoga studio when she migrates to South Korea. The Andiappan Yoga Ashram is home to yoga teacher trainings attended by yogis all over the world. It is also a major research Centre with significant contributions to the field of yoga therapy and research, recognized by both the State and central government. Led by Guruji Asana Andiappan, the trainings feature the unique Andiappan Yoga System, developed based on over six decades of research on the seminal yogic text, Thirumandiram by Thirumoolar. The unique system is largely therapeutic, helping balance the thridhosa in the body. Guruji Andiappan and his family are renowned yoga masters in India. His son, Yogananth Andiappan is the founder and director of Anahata Studio in Hong Kong, pioneering the practice of yoga therapy in the city and started yoga studio in chennai. His daughter, Dr. Lakshmi Andiappan is a well-known yoga therapist in India, recognized for her research in various areas of yoga including yoga for pregnancy, obesity and women’s diseases. Since the centre’s inception, it has hosted over 50 batches of training programs, with over 800 students successfully completing a course. Graduates of the Ashram’s teacher trainings often move on to teach yoga, with some of them starting and running yoga studios of their own. Sylvie Tremblay, who has just completed the intensive Hatha Yoga Teacher Training India under both Guruji Asana Andiappan and Yogananth Andiappan, is one of the many. She runs the Sangha Yoga Studio in Montreal, Canada. “Everyone [in the teacher training] is sincerely and deeply devoted to the real purpose of yoga,” she said. “In this Indian style of teacher training, all aspects of the real practice is covered, and most of the principles of Hatha Yoga are involved. I specially thank Yogananth and Guruji for keeping the path of self-realisation alive.” The Ashram has now opened admissions to its 51st Batch of Yoga Teacher Trainings. Courses are effectively structured, with admission count limited to 15 students per batch. Modern accommodation including a full yogic diet is provided for students.
