The Volkswagen Group with its headquarters in Wolfsburg is one of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers and the largest carmaker in Europe. In 2007, the Group increased the number of vehicles delivered to customers to 6.189 million (2006: 5.734 million), corresponding to a 9.8 percent share of the world passenger car market.

In Western Europe, the largest car market in the world, almost one in every five new cars (19.5 percent) comes from the Volkswagen Group. Group sales rose in 2007 to 108.9 billion euros (2006: 104.9 billion). Profit after tax in the 2007 financial year amounted to 4.12 billion euros (2006: 2.75 billion)

The Group is made up of eight brands from six European countries: Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, SEAT, Skoda and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

Each brand has its own character and operates as an in­dependent entity on the market. The product range extends from low­consumption small cars to luxury class vehicles. In the commercial vehicle sector, the product offering spans pick ups, busses and heavy trucks.

The Group operates 48 production plants in thirteen European countries and a further six countries in the Americas, Asia and Africa. Around the world, more than 329,000 employees produce almost 25,400 vehicles or are involved in vehicle­related services each working day. The Volkswagen Group sells its vehicles in more than 150 countries.

It is the goal of the Group to offer attractive, safe and environmentally sound vehicles which are competitive on an increasingly tough market and which set world standards in their respective classes.

Ferdinand Porsche’s blue­print turned the dream of automotive mobility for the masses into a “people’s car”. The automobile laid the foundation for a com­pany which rapidly acquired international significance after the Second World War.

The motor of the “Wirtschafts­wunder“ was air­cooled and fitted at the rear of a car whose distinctive silhouette made Volkswagen a household name all over the world, just as the Transporter launched in 1950 became a much­loved work­horse and camper.

Numerous production facilities outside Europe were already being set up in the 1950s to bring the automaker closer to the customer.

Having evolved into a German automotive group with the acquisition of “Auto Union GmbH” and “NSU Motoren­werke AG” in the 1960s, the dynamic market success of the Passat, Golf and Polo post­1973 triggered further corporate growth towards a multi­brand group: SEAT and Skoda were added in 1985 and 1991, Bentley and Bugatti in 1998.

May 28, 1937“Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH” is established in Berlin.

Early 1938 Construction of the Volkswagen plant east of Fallersleben be­gins.

September 16, 1938 The company name is changed to “Volkswagenwerk GmbH”.

Between 1939 and 1945, the Volkswagen plant is re­organized for the production of armaments rather than the production of civilian vehicles. The expanding armaments out­put of the plant after summer 1940 leads the company to meet most of its labour needs by using forced labour from abroad. In late summer 1944, almost two thirds of the 18,000­strong workforce is made up of foreign forced labourers.

April 11, 1945 The American troops who enter the town put an end to the pro­duction of military equipment and liberate the forced labourers.

July 4, 1995The “Volkswagen Nutzfahr­zeuge” (Commercial Vehicles) brand is introduced.

November 17, 1995Volkswagen Argentina S.A. commissions its new production plant, which initially builds the Golf and Polo models, in Pacheco near Buenos Aires.

September 3, 1996Skoda commissions a new assembly hall for the efficient production of the Octavia in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic.

September 1996The fifth generation of the Passat sedan with a rounded roof line goes into production in Emden. The Zwickau plant follows suit in October. Production of the Variant, in which Volkswagen introduces the newly developed 2.3 liter VR5 engine with 150 horsepower, begins in March 1997.

August 1997At the Wolfsburg site the fourth Golf generation goes into production: the body design with a long roof, sharp drop­off tail and robust C­pillar is reminiscent of the Golf 1. Immaculate in appearance, with reduced gap widths, flush assembly and harmonious joining lines, the new Golf sets the highest quality standards.

January 1, 2001“Volkswagen Group Australia Pty. Ltd.”, the import company established in Alexandria, begins operating as an in­dependent company to develop the Australian market. In 2007, sales increase by over 26 percent, rising to more than 34,900 vehicles.

Summer 2001The new engine development center in Györ, Hungary, opens.

August 16, 2001 “Auto 5000 GmbH” with its new wage system is established at the Wolfsburg site to build the “Touran” under competitive conditions.

September 2001The Skoda Superb debuts at the IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt.

August 2002 Series production of the New Beetle Convertible begins at the Puebla plant in Mexico.

September 21, 2005Production of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ new “Constellation” truck family begins in Resende, Brazil. The seven­ to forty­tonne trucks hold a 33 percent share of the market in Brazil.

October 10, 2005The Supervisory Board welcomes the decision by Dr.­Ing h. c. F. Porsche Aktiengesellschaft to acquire an initial approx. 20% of the ordinary shares of Volks­wagen AG: the stake in voting capital is raised to more than 25% on November 13, 2006.

May 19, 2006The Volkswagen Eos, the new convertible­coupé, is launched on the German market.

October 3, 2006Volkswagen acquires an initial 15.06 % stake in MAN Aktien­gesellschaft.

November 1, 2006The collective bargaining agree­ment between Volkswagen AG and IG Metall providing for a working time corridor with a ceiling of 34 hours comes into force. At the same time, produc­tion volumes are agreed for the six traditional plants in order to improve capacity utilization and safeguard jobs.
