Be a Good Neighbor ! I get calls and emails everyday that are complaints about junk at a house, or long grass, or tree limbs so low people can not walk on the sidewalk, or junk cars in a driveway for months on end, or fences falling down — about all kinds of things that make a street look bad, and the neighborhood look bad. Some of the complaints are about conditions that are deed restrictions, and we send a letter to the owner asking that it be cleaned up—over 80% of the time this letter works, and the problem is fixed. I am always pleasantly surprised at how often someone I sent a letter to, asking them to fix a problem, calls me and thanks me for reminding them, for giving them a gentle nudge. I think many of us get caught up in life: work, kids, school, any of a million things going on, and we just forget to be a good neighbor. Yes, most people are willing to improve the neighborhood, if they get that gentle nudge to remind them. Let’s all take a look around our homes—a real hard look. Is there something that you’ve been meaning to do, but just haven’t gotten to yet? I have some old wood that I need to cut into shorter lengths and bundle so Allied Waste will take it on the next bulky pickup day. Is your lawn cut? What is that pile of stuff in the driveway, or on the side of the house? Are you ever going to do something with that old car or truck? Can you do anything that will im-prove your neighborhood? Do you have an elderly neighbor who may need help taking out trash? Are you being the best neighbor that you can? I have lived here for over 28 years, and Anderson Mill has not just been a subdivision, it has been a neighborhood, a Community. We say “Community Matters,” join in keeping Anderson Mill a Community — be a good neighbor.

— Mark Maxwell, District Manager -

It’s Time for Pool Passes Again If you have already purchased your pool pass from last year, don’t forget that they are now good for a year from the date of purchase. In order to renew your pass or purchase one you must go to the District office located in the Com-munity Center at the end of the El Salido parking lot instead of the pools. As always, if claiming residency status, you will be asked for two forms of current identification, one being a photo I.D. and the other a current bill or document connect-ing your name with the residence. Everyone in the household getting a pass, is required to have their picture taken and have their own pool passes– see image.

What are the reasons behind pool passes?

There are three main reasons for the changes. The first is customer service. Patrons no longer have to stand in the sun waiting to reach the pool window to pay entrance fees and obtain their pool tags. All pass sales (annual pool pass & fitness center) are at the Community Center in the A/C. If you are already in our system from last year, renewing will be very easy. Your information is still in the system and all you will need is your proof of residency and payment. Why prove your residency again? It is surprising the number of people who have moved out of Anderson Mill in the past year who still come back and want to use our facilities at the resident rates. It is a real good

deal— great facilities at a low price. When you enter the pool with your pool pass you proceed to the window and scan your cards. It takes ap-proximately 3 seconds between card scans. No more waiting to sign in and shorter entry lines into the pools.

The second reason pool passes have been imple-mented is security. In the past our system did not ensure that Anderson Mill Residents were the one’s getting the price breaks at the pools as in-tended. Also, it was very challenging for staff to manage the tag thefts and tag “sharing” that was occurring. Swim tags have always been non- trans-ferable.

The third reason is that the new system is a man-agement and data collection tool. All class regis-trations, tennis keys, fitness center passes, and annual swim passes are in the system. The various scans will enable us to run reports that show

bather loads at various times of the day at each pool and actual use of the fitness center. This information will permit staff to substantiate switching guard coverage as needed and to possi-bly expand fitness center hours if use is docu-mented in such a way that warrants it. If an emer-gency happens at the facility we will be able to identify the patron simply by checking the facility entry reports or the visitor sign-in log.

In summary, these improvements will allow us to make sure we are charging everyone fairly, and provides new conveniences like quicker registra-tion and computerized data collection. The new system will collect valuable information for man-agement, allowing us to better serve the commu-nity in an efficient manner and disseminate parks and recreation program information to all in an effort to promote our programming, enabling us to keep our fees low for the residents of Anderson Mill.

Tornado Siren Reminder

Now that tornado season is starting, it may be a good idea to explain when our Tornado Siren is set off. It does NOT necessarily mean a tornado has been sighted. It means that a Tornado Warning has been issued for our area, and you should listen to the radio or TV for current information — AND TO BE AWARE OF THE POSSIBLE DANGER !

What’s Going On!

What do you do with all the stuff that needs to be thrown out from your Spring Cleaning? Some of it may be branches, leaves, weeds, junk, or even household hazardous materials—like old paint, gardening chemicals, cleaners, etc. Well, here is some information on what is available to Anderson Mill residents: Bulky Pickup by Allied Waste—part of our trash collection service is a bulky pickup on the first Wednesday of every month. Bulky waste includes such items as stoves, hot water tanks, washing ma-chines, furniture and other large waste items, or up to about 15 stan-dard trash bags. They will take up to 3 cubic yards of “stuff”. Note: they cannot take refrigerators or air conditioners unless the freon has been removed and is tagged by a licensed serviceman. Branches must still be cut into four foot lengths and bundled. No construction materials. This time of year it may take a couple of days to get everything. Have it at the curb by 6:00 AM. Household Hazardous Waste— The City of Austin has a House-hold Hazardous Waste Collection Site at 2514 Business Center Drive, Austin, TX 78744. The hours are: Tue-Wed: Noon – 6 p.m. First Saturday of each month: 7 am to Noon. Phone Number: (512) 974-4343. Residents may bring up to 30 gallons of home-generated hazardous waste to the site free of charge. Please, no containers larger than 5 gallons. See http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/sws/residential.htm for more details.
