t had a sublime and solemn effect, so wild, so solitary – no one but ourselves and our little party there...I had a little whisky and water, as the people declared pure water would be too chilling.___Queen Victoria

The spirit of Royal Deeside

_____

Scotland: where you become lost in the evocative landscapes of forest, moorland, craggy outcrops

and lochs.

Whisky is liquid sunshine.___ George Bernard Shaw

Imagine a snow-fed river rising from the famous Cairngorm mountains that tumbles and falls into the splendour of Royal Deeside. Follow the flowing water of the Dee through the sculpted landscape and embrace the journey it takes through ancient forests and autumnal tones. In the midst of Scottish towers and baronial castles close to the silver darling city of Aberdeen, the Dee drifts into the sea. At the heart of Royal Deeside is the River Dee. Running west to east, it

is mostly bounded on both north and south banks by high hills. Rising high in the Cairngorms on the Braeriach plateau, the Dee flows for 87 miles, eventually passing through Aberdeen Harbour and into the North Sea. Royal Deeside captivates misty-eyed romantic visions of Scotland. Famous for its world-renowned, unspoilt natural beauty and as a playground for Royalty, Deeside is truly a land of dreams.

Royal Heritage_____

Overlapping the Cairngorms National Park, Royal Deeside is an area of fairytale castles, set amongst

magnificent mountains and glens.

The area owes its royal connections to Balmoral Castle, residence of the British Royal Family, which is situated in Deeside near Ballater. The Castle was purchased and rebuilt for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in 1856, after she fell in love with the Scottish Highlands during her first visit in 1842. The Royal Family has spent their summers there ever since, and the castle is rumoured to be Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite royal residence. Every year the family attend the world famous Braemar Gathering and Highland Games as well as other local events. The Castle is an example of Scottish baronial

architecture and is classified by Historic Scotland as a Category A listed building. Royal Deeside is a popular area for tourists due to the combination of scenic beauty and historic royal associations. The beautiful landscape of Deeside is recognised by its inclusion in the Cairngorms National Park and the Deeside and Lochnagar National Scenic Area. Throughout the local area, many shops and tradesmen proudly display the Royal Warrant outside their premises. Some shops are by appointment both to Her Majesty The Queen and to His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales.

Deeside Distillery

_____

The first new whisky distillery to be launched in Royal Deeside for almost 200 years.

Deeside Distillery has produced the first whisky in the region for almost 200 years. Our speciality is small batch whisky that echoes the heritage of this land and the modernity of whisky production. Our distilling and operations are headed up by Liam Pennycook, former Head Distiller at Strathearn and Scotland's Food and Drink 2017 rising star.

We use care and craftsmanship to create our precious liquid from our handcrafted copper still. Our whisky evokes the history of Royal Deeside by using local golden barleys and crystal-clear Deeside water; a touch of the unknown magic that the unique distillery brings which embodies the taste, culture and romance that is home.

‘Miracle water’of Royal Deeside

_____

“Today’s rain is tomorrow’s whisky” - we are blessed with a lot of water but only a limited

amount of small batch whisky.

Our distillery only uses waters from the ancient springs of the Pannanich Wells; one of the purest and healthiest mineral waters in the world. This gift from nature flows from the historic healing spring in one of the most beautiful, unspoilt parts of Scotland. It is a remote area located 600 feet above sea level, within the protected Cairngorms National Park and close to Balmoral Castle.

Over one billion litres of rain falls around the springs every year. The water spends around 50 years being gently filtered through the layers of underground rock and miles of crevices. It is during this time that the water’s unique

qualities are absorbed and captured. It flows naturally under its own pressure from the artesian springs on the heather clad hillside, free from pollution or the influences of man.

We believe in the importance in using the purest water. Deeside Mineral Water is unique – its specific chemical fingerprint shows low pH, low minerality and smaller molecular cluster size. From 1760, these properties have attracted health seekers to Deeside, who came to drink these miracle waters. This pure water perfectly complements and enhances the natural flavour of the spirit.

Rise of the small batch

_____

Deeside Distillery is one of a few independent distillers leading the uprising of small batch production by

creating limited runs of premium cask whisky.

Our Head Brewer and the team have used their skills to create a special wash, utilising a malt bill containing pale, crystal and chocolate malts to pair with the best casks available. In late 2017, we laid down our first experimental batches in octaves to ensure we gathered as much

knowledge as possible on how this spirit would age. With this investment in time, we are now certain we have created something special and we are ready to embark on full production of our special malt. This founders' release will be matured until 2029.

he proper drinking of Scotch whisky is more than indulgence: it is a toast to civilization, a tribute to the continuity of culture, a manifesto of man’s determination to use the resources of nature to refresh mind and body and enjoy to the full the senses with which he has been endowed.___David Daiches, Scottish literary historian
