This guide highlights some of the key services available to Postgraduate Students and Researchers. Please also see the Information For… pages on Library Online.

Library Resources• Our search engine “Discover” provides fast, easy access to our resources in a single search. Please note, some resources, such as Westlaw, are not yet searchable via Discover.

• Discover is ideal for keyword searches. If you already have a reference to an article, journal or book we recommend using the Library Catalogue (http://library.leedsmet. ac.uk) (for journals or books) or the Ejournal A-Z list (for an ejournal article).

• There are a number of features on Discover which may be of use to postgraduate students and researchers. Please see the Discover: advanced guide on Library Online or ask your Academic Librarian.

• You can access most of our electronic books and journals with your University Username and Password.

• The Library Online Information For… Researchers pages includes information on keeping up to date with your subject, including journal article alerts and RSS feeds.

Academic Librarians• Each subject area has a dedicated Academic Librarian. They offer introductions to Library services and resources as part of course inductions or via one-to-one appointments. Contact details are available on the Need Help? pages of Library Online.

• Academic Librarians maintain subject guides on the Resources pages of Library Online. These contain links to the main databases, journals, newspapers, books, ebooks, subject gateways, websites, etc for each subject area.

• Academic Librarians also offer workshops as part of the University’s Research Office training programme. Further information can be found at http://researchonline. leedsmet.ac.uk.

Borrowing, Renewing and Your Library Account• When you enrol you will receive a Campus Card which allows you to borrow, renew or place holds.

• Postgraduate and masters students can borrow 17 items and researchers 25 (including five short loans and eight audio visual). Further information on borrowing can be found under Services on Library Online.

• Please borrow or return via our self service machines. You need your Library ID from your Campus Card and a four digit PIN for borrowing. This is sent to your University email or you can collect it from X-stream or by asking Library staff.

• We will send a message to your University email account a few days before your standard loans are due back to remind you to return them. Any returned late will result in a fine.

• You can renew if there are no holds (reservations) on them and you don’t have a fine of over £5.00.

• You can place a hold on resources that are on loan via the Library Catalogue. We will send you an email when the hold is available.

• You can view your Library account via the Library Catalogue or X-stream.

Interlibrary Loans• The Interlibrary Loans service provides access to resources which are not held by Leeds Metropolitan University libraries in either print or electronic form.

• Photocopied journal articles, books and conference papers are obtained from the British Library Document Supply Centre or direct from other UK libraries.

• There is a charge for the service although some researchers may be able to obtain payment vouchers from their Faculty.

• More information is available on Library Online or from the Essential Library Guide: Using Other Libraries and Interlibrary Loans.

Using Other Libraries• Leeds Metropolitan University takes part in reciprocal schemes allowing you access to other UK libraries.

• One scheme is SCONUL Access. This is supported by most of the higher education libraries of the UK and Ireland, and gives borrowing rights to postgraduate students and researchers.

• You may also find the COPAC online catalogue useful (www.copac.ac.uk). This provides access to the catalogues of The British Library, the major UK and Irish University research libraries, the National Library of Scotland and the National Library of Wales.

Obtaining Theses• We subscribe to the Index to Theses database (via Library Online). This provides abstracts of almost 600,000 theses accepted for higher degrees by universities in Great Britain and Ireland since 1716.

• The British Library’s Electronic Theses Online service is also available at http://ethos.bl.uk. If you register with your email address and create your own password you access over 300,000 theses.

• The Library also keeps some copies of dissertations and theses produced by Leeds Metropolitan University students.

Offsite and Pay-to-Post• If you are registered for a research award and live outside the Leeds postcode area you may want to register with our Offsite service. Postgraduate students who are rarely, or never, required to attend campus may also register.

• Offsite offers a tailored package of Library support. For example, you could get books posted to you, or request photocopies of journal articles or book chapters, subject to copyright law.

• There is more Offsite information on Library Online, see Information For... Offsite Students or contact (0113) 812 6779 / [email protected]

•Our Pay-to-Post service also enables staff and students who are not eligible for Offsite to have Leeds Metropolitan University Library books or journal articles sent by post.
