Reardon Executive Director BUILDING MINDS & CHANGING LIVES STAR NEWS HORIZONS FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN FINDS ITS PLACE IN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS You, our most generous and caring supporters, have allowed for the Catholic Schools Foundation to form meaningful and prosperous partnerships over the years. Today, we are excited to announce our newest partnership with Horizons for Homeless Children, one of Massachusetts’ few organizations to focus exclusively on the needs of young homeless children and their families. Early childhood trauma, such as homeless- ness and extreme poverty, can affect a child for a lifetime and weaken the developing brain, leading to lifelong problems. Through this partnership, you are helping our most vulnerable — homeless children — receive access to quality, values-based education at Catholic schools for Horizons participants who graduate from the organization’s early education centers. This program offers a safe and consistent environment to families facing hardship and instability. In addition to scholarships, families receive support and consistency as their children transition to a new school. Scholarships are guaranteed for students every year as they continue to study at their Catholic school from pre-K through the eighth grade. This provides families security and the ability to build strong relationships with their school community. Ties with the school are furthered strengthened as families work closely with Horizon’s Community and Schools Coordinator, CSF’s director of the Catholic Schools Admissions Collaborative, and school representatives. Our donors have also made it possible to leverage corporate support for this program. This past June, J.P. Morgan Chase made a donation in celebration of the J.P. Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge. And, to a sold- out crowd of 9,000 runners from over 500 companies, CSF was recognized as the sole beneficiary of this year’s race. Proceeds will provide scholarships for students in the Horizons for Homeless Children program, giving them a point of stability and hope at a tumultuous time in their lives. On Wednesday, April 15, 2015 the Inner-City Scholarship Fund (ICSF) hosted the25th Annual Dinner Celebration honoringJack Connors, Jr. Because of the incrediblesupport of our donors, we raised more than$3.1 million for the students — thank you!

Heather Unruh, master of ceremonies for theevent, recognized Nithaelle Simoly, a seniorat Cardinal Spellman High School in Brockton, as the evening’s student speaker.Below is her inspiring speech.

I represent the thousands of students you directly support each year. On behalf of allof us, I want to thank you for providing theopportunity to make our dreams possible.

My story begins in Haiti, where I was bornin 1997. Both my parents moved to theUnited States when I was two years old insearch of a better life for our family. I livedwith my grandmother for the next five yearsand never once saw my parents. At age sevenI was put on a plane to Logan Airport all bymyself, not speaking a word of English, to finally be reunited with my parents and twoyounger siblings whom I had never met untilthat day!

My parents value education and faith. Whenthey decided to enroll me at TrinityCatholic Academy in Brockton in 2009 theyhad to sacrifice a great deal so I would beable to get a top quality education thatwould challenge me academically and alsoreinforce my faith life.

Life can change in a split second. I’ll neverforget — it was Tuesday, May 29. Mymother had suffered a massive stroke whichcaused the whole left side of her body to becompletely paralyzed. She could no longer

work, and my father had to take time out ofwork in order to take care of our family.

My family's financial struggle became so extreme that we were forced to live in a housing project for almost a year. Becausethe room was so small, my father could notstay with us. During that time, my mother, all of my younger siblings and I had to sharea single small room cramped with three beds, bags of what remained of our clothes, and a mini fridge for our food. Trying to do homework and studying in a room with ababy crying during the night and no privacyduring the day made it difficult for me tofocus on school. While it was hard to stay focused, I pushed myself and was able to become a better student and a strongerperson.

With the help of friends and family and thegrace of God, we were able to get throughthe hardships of the room and its many inconveniences. I thank God for surrounding my family with so much loveand support.

I am especially grateful to Trinity Catholicand Cardinal Spellman High School for giving me such an outstanding advantage inlife. I want to thank you, the benefactors

of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund, for supporting kids like me. You've allowed meto grow into a better person through my education and in my faith.

Your generosity means more to me than youwill ever know, and it will never be forgotten, because you are part of the reason why I willnever give up on my dreams.

Sitting alone on that plane as a seven year oldgirl flying from Haiti to Boston, I assure youI never believed any of this would have beenpossible. But because of my parents’ undyingcommitment, my outstanding Catholic education and your generous support, myfuture is bright. I stand before you tonightconfident, humbled and eternally grateful.

Thank you for giving hope to that frightenedlittle seven year old girl.

Nithaelle will be attending Stonehill Collegein the fall.

STELLAR SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT: EAST BOSTON CENTRAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL WHERE ACADEMICS, INTEGRITY & COMPASSION UNITE

East Boston Central Catholic School(EBCCS) is the first inter-parish, collabora-tive school in the Archdiocese of Boston, andthis year celebrated its 40th anniversary.Since it opened, EBCCS has educated over12,000 children by emphasizing faith formation, high academic achievement, awareness of social justice issues, and the arts.At the only Catholic school in East Boston,forward-thinking educators, pastors, andcommunity leaders have continuously developed innovative ideas to ensure Catholiceducation thrives in that community.

Because of you, 92 students this year have received scholarships to attend EBCCS.With a median income of just $45,000 for afamily of four, your assistance provides themeans for these children to attend the schoolthey love.

Your support has not only provided scholar-ships but has made possible the school’s integration of the City Connects counselingprogram through Boston College. This

program offers critical school-based intervention that revitalizes student care and addresses the needs of every child across academic, social-emotional, health, and family domains. Your contributions have allowed EBCCS to provide the extra supportof a counselor, allowing many students toexcel in school despite the challenges theyface outside the classroom.

What’s more, our supporters have also beenthe catalyst that initiated a Madrinas parentgroup to engage the growing Hispanic population in the community. Madrinasallow CSF to expand outreach efforts and fortify meaningful relationships with Latinoand new immigrant communities and have maximized opportunities for families to attend EBCCS.

Finally, this past May, EBCCS was selectedas the host school for the 2015 Annual ICSFBus Tour. Our supporters boarded a bus from Boston’s financial district and headedto East Boston to witness first-hand the

school’s commitment to preparing studentsacademically, socially, and spiritually in life.Through tours, classroom visits, and studentperformances our supporters got a glimpseof a day in the life of a student at EBCCS.

The students received a surprise when specialguest Andre Tippett, former New EnglandPatriot and 2008 NFL Hall of Famer joinedthe classroom tours, ate lunch with the students and presented autographed footballs for excellence in community serviceand acts of kindness.

With a committed and caring staff and anamazing student body, it is no wonderEBCCS shines brightly in the heart of EastBoston. We thank you for all that you makepossible for EBCCS and its students.

YOUR “WILLING” COMMITMENT TO CATHOLIC EDUCATIONOne of the most effective ways you can ensure that our inner-city youth continue to receivea high quality, value-based Catholic education for the long term is by leaving a bequest inyour will. While often thought of as a “planned gift”, it is much more than that. You canleave a lasting legacy and help the Catholic Schools Foundation continue to support students, families and schools well into the future.

If you are “willing” to commit, it is important that you take action now to ensure a lastinglegacy to the organizations you care about most, and we hope you will consider includingthe Catholic Schools Foundation in your will. It is simple to do. Talk with your family andfinancial advisors, and then let us know of your intent. Please contact Gina Rindfleisch at617.778.5981 x 210 or [email protected].

“Children appreciate the

importance of faith in their

lives and recognize the rewards

of service to the less fortunate

of our community and our

world. Emphasis on these

humanitarian qualities as well

as high academic standards

distinguishes us as truly a

Catholic school.”
