17 What’s On

Unfortunately, there is neither room nor time to contribute

a News from Nowhere Column in The Dubber this month. You will know that I have been filling in every third month but this month, I have no time to write it... after a long weekend editing.

We are, sad to say, bereft of columnists since Tony Viney retired. Roger Free and Patrick McGill keep soldiering on but we could really do with a few more budding columnists to keep News from Nowhere on track. If anyone would like to send me a column or feels that they could contribute on an occasional/regular basis, please let me know.

Those people who read the column will appreci-ate that we strive to make things, interesting, enjoy-able and accessible... and they are the only criteria!

March 2017

As I write, a new chapter of history has begun. Recently, I was interested to find some re-

search completed by the harvard Business School that found it would take, on average, nearly six positive comments to counteract the effects of one negative comment.

of course, some negativity can be good for us. It can spur us on to greater things, be character building, even build our determination. But, if all we receive is negativity, particularly if it is personal and especially if it is unjust, then the demoralising effects can be quite devastating. I don’t know if you have ever been on the end of an inappropriate verbal attack but it can totally destroy the confidence whether it is inflicted by shouting or by the quiet use of cutting words.

There is a time and place for confrontation, and its purpose should only ever be to seek a positive outcome from our differences, never to pour our anger and frustrations on to another person. That achieves lit-tle except discontent and hurt all round, even if it is just our off loading on to another the effects of a bad day.

I am reminded of the playground rhyme we used to chant as chil-dren:

“Sticks and stones may break my bonesBut words will never hurt me.”

of course, this was just not true. Words are a very powerful and destructive weapon, capable of inflicting wounds whose effects might never heal. once a word or sentence is spoken or mailed it can never be unsaid, and it will embrace a life of its own. It will be repeated, embel-lished and spread as rumour causing untold harm in its wake. Just a lit-tle thing spoken in anger or without thought, whose knock on effect can assume unimaginable proportions! I don’t suppose any of us realise the power our words can have on another person’s life, although we would be very quick on the attack if we were on the receiving end of thought-less verbal abuse. Because that is what negative speaking can so quickly become when it is shared in an inappropriate way.

When we direct unkind, negative or aggressive words simply to ap-pease our own frustrations then we act out unkindness, and it is little different than if we had thrown a physical punch at the recipient, except of course a physical punch will heal more quickly and is less likely to fester, undermine or destroy confidence.

My role as a priest opens me up to lots of negativity, and I have learnt that people will often be very vocal about the things they don’t like, but rarely feedback the things they do. I think this might be partly because we live in a world that dwells in negativity and reports on the bad things of life before celebrating the good! We are encouraged to re-act strongly to things that we do not agree with or things that upset us. I guess hurting people will often choose to hurt back. however, remem-bering the 6:1 ratio, it would be a tremendous community achievement if we became a group of villages that breaks away from the common responses of society, to become places where positive and encouraging comments were the fashion. how lovely if we lived in an atmosphere where our natural and automatic reaction is to build each other up, and truly seek the common good.

all-encompassing service

I love our village. A few weeks ago I was in the Post Of-fice and a friend (of a similar vintage as me) was suddenly

assailed by ‘Siri’ or ‘Flossy’, one of those robotic voices that live inside our mobile phones. He tried to silent the lady but failed, so Vicky, who was looking after him at the Post Office counter, offered to help. She asked him to put in his pin number, which Siri then helpfully repeated to the whole shop! Undeterred, Vicky did battle with the machine, which was under threat of annihilation by my friend, and finally she managed to shut her up. Siri - that is. So not only can you get your stamps or your paper or some cheese in our lovely Post Office but even technophobes can have their brows soothed by the equally lovely staff.

At St George’s we have got some lovely people too, who regularly try to tickle your taste buds. Coffee Pot on the first Thursday morning of each month steadily gains in popular-ity, with fresh brewed coffee, homemade cakes and pastries served in the recently created coffee shop area. All proceeds go to charity. Everyone is invited and if you have just come back from a walk with your dog, it’s welcome too.

This month sees the beginning of Lent. Whilst we might individually decide to give up something we enjoy, it seems more fruitful if we go out of our way to do something that helps charities or institutions which are in need. That’s why for years now we have prepared tasty lunches every Wednes-day in Lent in Langton Village Hall, which are really good. If you haven’t been before, you should see the array of pud-dings for you to choose from. At the same, time we raise a lot

of money. Each week the menu changes and is cooked by a different group from the parishes. It’s always well supported but we would like you to come as well. We know you will enjoy the atmosphere and the food. Serving starts at 12.30.

This year the proceeds will be split between the local appeal for money for an Admiral Dementia nurse in this area, Under Tree Schools in South Sudan – the only girl’s school in that country and our own St George’s School here in Langton to invest in their spiritual garden, where children can go to read or to just be quiet if they wish. Last year we raised £1332, a good chunk of the £6262 we raised in total for 15 charities. Chris Meadows

open the Book

Since the 2014 Autumn term, we have been presenting ‘Open the Book’ bible stories once every half term to the

pupils of St George’s Primary School, starting with the Crea-tion and the Garden of Eden through many serious subjects up to our latest one, the last supper and the arrest of Jesus which was presented in February. We always try to add a little bit of humour to make the stories memorable for the young children. Our next story will continue the Easter theme, and so it will be very difficult to be light hearted. Having been welcomed into the school by the former head Anita Cubitt, we are really pleased that her successor, Helen Wemyss, has allowed us to continue to play out these wonderful stories for the children, who, I am told, look forward to seeing us. If anyone would like further information about Open the Book, details can be found on www.biblesociety.org.uk/get-involved/open-the-book/, or if you would like to take part please contact either Gaynor or myself, no acting skills are required. As our surgery continues to expand we are in the proc-ess of expanding our surgery team. We not only hope

to have another salaried GP working alongside Dr Lepper and Dr Armitage in the very near future, but also another Dispenser to work alongside Kerry Norman.

A Patient’s Participation Group has also been established to enhance the fantastic work that the Friends of Corfe Cas-tle Surgery are already doing. The PPG will meet four times a year and I will update you in the next newsletter on their work.

Anyone at the age of 75 should be aware that we offer a healthcare check with the GP, so you are welcome to make an appointment by contacting the surgery. This is proving to be a very popular service to our patients.

We are working with the Diabetic Eye Screening serv-ice to enable them to use our surgery to complete annual eye screenings at our surgery instead of patients going else-where. We hope to commence this service from April this year. Tina Sturgeon

BUtterflies in pUrBeck

Listening to the Today pro-gramme recently, in bed and

in a half-awake state, my ears pricked up on hearing an item on the dramatic decline of but-terflies in the UK last year, and a specific mention of the poor numbers in Purbeck. As some-one who regularly monitors local butterfly populations, I had not picked up on such a marked change; so were the num-bers really that bad? Results for Dorset have not yet been fully analysed, but indications are that 18 species showed a significant decline in their populations last year, with only three species on the increase, and so clearly the true position is much worse than I had thought.

How do we know about these population changes amongst butterfly species? Well, in Dorset alone, over 60 sites are monitored on a weekly basis over the six warmer months by a dedicated army of volunteers, and a number of these sites are close at hand. They include Durlston CP, Bal-

lard Down, Corfe Common and Langton West Wood. The data produced is extremely valuable, as it gives a good indi-cation of the status of many other insects such as flies, grass-hoppers, bees and moths. Not only are many of our crops dependent upon such insects for pollination, but also they are a vital food source for much of our wildlife.

So back to our local butterflies... How do their numbers stack up? Well, it seems that total butterfly numbers re-corded on local sites are only around 60% of those counted in the two previous years, a very significant decrease, while more detailed statistics confirm comments from many peo-ple on the lack of garden sightings last summer. Prominent amongst the more colourful butterflies are two resident spe-cies, the Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell; numbers of the former were only around a third of those recorded in the two previous years, while for the Small Tortoiseshell they were only a sixth! Going further afield to common butterflies of our fields and hedgerows, both the Common Blue and Gate-keeper showed big declines over previous years. The reasons for such major changes have yet to be analysed, but climatic factors are probably the principle cause, with parasites and pesticides perhaps also playing a part.

On a wider basis, the steady decline in numbers of in-vertebrates and plants throughout much of our countryside, and the loss of biodiversity is both worrying and challeng-ing. Most of our butterfly counts are carried out in protected areas, but much of the green and visually attractive areas of our countryside are virtual wildlife deserts. It is easy to point the finger at farmers for this situation, but in truth, we are all to blame. At least in Purbeck, we are far luckier with our lo-cal environment than in much of the UK. Colin Nunn

reQUiem premiere

The Purbeck Arts Choir will present the UK premiere performance of Helen Ostafew’s ‘Requiem for Human-

ity’ and the ever popular ‘Fauré Requiem’ on 1 April. Ex-cerpts from ‘Requiem for Humanity’ were performed at last year’s PAW Festival, but this will be the first ever opportu-nity to hear the complete work in the UK. Helen was very in-volved in the local music scene a few years ago both teaching and conducting, including a junior choir at the Malthouse School and the vocal group Five High. She was also MD for the Studland Youth Music Theatre and the Purbeck Players and was resident singer and pianist at the Pines Hotel.

The Stanford String Quartet will accompany the choir with Simon Lole (organ), Dean Temmink (piano) and Ash-ley John Long (double bass) and Helen herself will be joining soloists Miro Vosper, Grace Lovelass and David Fawcett.

The concert is in support of Marie Curie and will take place at 7.30pm in St Mary’s Church, Swanage on 1 April. Tickets are only £10 in advance (£12 on the door) from choir members, Corbens or Liz Roberts 01929 481419. Children and students free. Liz Roberts

Leader of the Council, Councillor Gary Suttle, said: “I stated from the outset that this was to be the decision of each individual councillor. I have every respect for the outcome of the vote and will do my utmost to support the mandate that I have been given by my Council.”

Councillor Suttle continued: “It is clear this decision was not taken lightly by councillors.”

poole’s seven seas festival

There’s an ocean of fun in store as Poole’s first Seven Seas Festival drops anchor at Baiter in May.

The free event has three days and two nights of family-friendly international food, music and culture in partnership with Poole Maritime Festival, bringing a world of seafaring sounds, tastes and traditions to Poole’s Harbourside Park.

“This is a voyage of discovery – around the world in 30 hours!” Says festival director Ben Dyas of Immense Events.

“The Seven Seas Festival is open for 30 hours over the weekend to enhance and compliment Poole Maritime Fes-tival by offering free family entertainment with great food, amazing music, loads of things to do for children and plenty of opportunities to learn something about Planet Earth as well.”

With some 30,000 visitors expected over the weekend the festival site will be divided into micro-sites, each represent-ing one of the seven seas and programmed with the music, food and culture of that region. The Harry Rocks main stage area will host live music in the evening from iconic tribute bands.

Highlights include an ice rink in the Arctic region, blues

and jazz music with smokehouse and Creole menus in the North Pacific and Zen meditation, yoga and pan-Asian cui-sine in the Indian Ocean site, with representatives of global and local charities and special interest groups hosting edu-cational talks, group activities and displays that relate to par-ticular regions.

At the heart of the Seven Seas Festival, the Poole Mari-time Arena will be packed to the gunwales with perform-ances, stands, stalls, displays and expert talks all related to Poole’s long and rich association with the sea.

With the Ikle Pirates children’s marquee and disco host-ed by Mr Merlin, UK Children’s Entertainer of the Year, with guest stars Elsa from Frozen and Peppa Pig, there’s lots for little ones to do as well.

And there’s sure to be plenty of interest in the Poole Har-bour BIG Wheel, an 108-feet-high Ferris Wheel set up on the shoreline affording amazing views across Poole Quay, the Harbour and Brownsea Island.

Our next bar at the village hall is on Friday, 17 March when we have our licensed bar open from 7.30 to

10.30pm in the Village Hall meeting room. The Residents Club does not pretend to be a pub, but our monthly Friday evenings at the hall are the nearest we have to a pub in Har-mans Cross and the Club was established to try to address this deficiency.

Scientists say that drinking together at a pub spreads so-cial cohesion and happiness.

Research showed that those without a local had smaller social networks and trusted neighbours less and that those networks provide the most important buffer against mental and physical illness.

In recent years, the lure of cheap booze from supermar-kets and tougher drink-drive laws have resulted in many pubs becoming restaurants or even closing. Now psycholo-gists at Oxford have backed what many people believe: We really don’t know what we’re missing. So come along and help the village hall to cement its place as the centre of the community. mUsic nights live

Our first live music event of 2017 is on Saturday, 11 March when six musicians from the Bournemouth

based Swing Unlimited take to the stage at 8pm. (Doors open 7.15pm). Comprising keyboard, trumpet, bass, and drums and including two vocalists, they will be perform-ing a mix of music from the likes of Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, through to Stevie Wonder, Amy Winehouse and Jools Holland. Swing Unlimited was origi-nally formed in late 2001 by various musicians who wanted to play upbeat and interesting big band music- with maybe a hint of nostalgia.

We are very fortunate to have one of the best live music venues in the Isle of Purbeck, our events give the audience an unrivalled view of the performers, comfortable café style seating, atmospheric lighting and very reasonable bar prices. All in all, a great night out on your doorstep! And certainly an evening not to be missed, if you are a Swing Music fan!

Tickets at £10 are on sale online from our website and at our usual outlets:

12A) on Tuesday, 14 March, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney. Sully is a US biographical drama based on the true story of Cap-tain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, who safely crash-landed a plane on the Hudson River in 2009 saving the lives of all 155 on board. However, even as he was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of avia-tion skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.

The Guardian critic’s headline read: ‘Tom Hanks brings dignity to the role of pilot Chesley Sullenberger while Clint Eastwood directs with cool efficiency’ and went on ‘Eastwood handles the action sequences with the same cool-headed ef-ficiency as Sully brought to his piloting – you suspect that Eastwood felt a kinship with this no-frills, no-nonsense man who was just doing his job. Hanks’s restrained, sober dignity in the role is nicely judged.’ Although, we know there was no loss of life or obvious villains involved, The Independent felt that Eastwood ‘transforms the material into a compelling true-life tale of quiet, unfussy heroism’ with The Telegraph adding that ‘he was assisted by the unassuming but splendid performance by Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart as the win-ningly blunt co-pilot’.

Movie Nights are held at Harmans Cross Village Hall on the second Tuesday every month. Tickets are £5 each and are only available at the door on the night. The hall and licensed bar will open at 7pm with the next feature’s trailer preceding the film at 7.30 and, with a 15 minute interval, the evening will end around 9.25pm. ‘Wish we had discovered this museum years ago’…’Delighted to have found this wonderful hidden

place’… ‘Excellent. Will come again’ Just three of many simi-lar comments in last summer’s Visitors’ Book.

The museum will re-open for the summer season on 1 April and, as before, it will focus on The Purbeck Stone In-dustry with a separate exhibition of documents, photographs and artefacts relating to Langton Matravers in bygone days. This year there will also be an interesting display about The Story of Radar and the part played by Langton and Worth in its war-time development.

However, to be really successful the museum depends on volunteer custodians who typically spend two hours each week welcoming visitors.

We are desperate to find twelve people who would be prepared to be at the museum from 10 to 12 or 2 till 4 on one day a week. No experience is necessary, or knowledge! All that is needed is a willingness to meet and greet: it is not an onerous task, but a vital one. Without such custodians the museum cannot open daily from Monday to Saturday.

If you are interested in this, please contact Jasmine Cattle [01929 421372] for a chat about what you can offer.

There will be a Briefing Meeting for custodians in the Vil-lage Hall at 11am on Thursday, 16 March and we would be delighted by the pleasure of your company! David Selman

On 1 March we’re showing Things to Come, reviewed in last month’s Dubber. In April we’re screening Cheva-

lier on Wednesday 5 at 7.30pm in Langton Matravers Village Hall. This spikey and witty black comedy film is set in the middle of the Aegean Sea, where six men on a fishing trip on a luxury yacht decide to play a game. During this game, things will be compared. Things will be measured. Songs will be butchered, and blood will be tested. Friends will be-come rivals and rivals will become hungry. But at the end of the journey, when the game is over, the man who wins will be the best man. And he will wear on his smallest finger the victory ring: the Chevalier.

While the film is full of artifice and allegorical implica-tion, it also presents itself as a quasi-scientific look at hu-man male pack behaviour as well as a drama of some of the sad, ridiculous and tender ways that boys will be boys. In Greek with English subtitles. Tickets £5 on the door, which will open at 7pm. Glasses will be supplied should you wish to bring your own drink with you. great British spring clean

Two of Litter-free Purbeck’s new volunteer teams, Clean Up Corfe and Worth Picking Up got off to a great start

in November. They did their bit last month towards Keep Britain Tidy’s spring litter initiative, the Great British Spring Clean, by sweeping up litter left by others. Swanage and Lang-ton are still to go. So if you can spare a couple of hours to join the Love Langton team (now in their sixth year) please come along and lend a hand to make Langton even lovelier. Details are (please note changes from previous years):

Friday, 3 March 10.45am - Meet at Burngate Stonecarv-ing Centre, Langton Matravers BH19 3B

Saturday, 4 March 10am - Meet at the National Trust’s Spyway Car Park, Durnford Drove, Langton Matravers, BH19 3HG

Monday, 6 March 10am - Meet by the village sign, by St George’s Church

Please leave your dogs and children under 11 at home; supervised children over 11 are welcome. You’ll need to dress according for the weather and wear sturdy shoes/boots and please bring a pair of gardening gloves. (We have spares but most people like to use their own.)

As always, we’re supported by the National Trust and Langton Matravers Parish Council, whose support is invalu-able. Our litter picks are fun and friendly and very scenic and Langton needs you.

A large audience very much enjoyed the recent talk on ‘Tales of Swanage Lifeboat’ and many of us who were

there realised that the lifeboat and its crew are something that we tend to take for granted… like the English weather!

However, our local weather is something about which you can soon find out if you attend the next talk arranged by the Langton Matravers Local History and Preservation Society in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday, 23 March 2017.

The speaker, local historian David Haysom, lays no claim to being Michael Fish, nor can he invoke the weather like William Shakespeare in his play King Lear with ‘Blow, winds,

Fencing Contractors have been at work in coastal areas, and there have been more repairs to access infrastructure. The Woodland Days are over for the winter, with a fence go-ing up around the newly-coppiced area at the end of Febru-ary. There are serious problems with water damage on parts of the Priests’ Way and Mr Kershaw is getting quotes for re-pairs: meanwhile he will do temporary work to stabilise the track as far as possible.

Dcc highWays site meetingCouncillors will shortly be meeting a DCC Highways

representative to consider how to implement speed restric-tions in the High Street, as there is presently a problem with drivers exceeding the speed limit at the top and the bottom of the village. The question of a new sign to deter speeding cyclists at the top of the village will also be discussed.

Warning: crack lane roaD eDge!Please drive carefully when using Crack Lane, particu-

larly if you need to pass another vehicle on the East side. There are increasingly-large and deep gaps between the edge of the carriageway and the soft verge in several places, espe-cially at the top, and these have already caused damage to vehicles. DCC are aware of the problem and have done some infilling, but this is not yet sufficient.

coomBe crossing proposalCouncillors considered the latest version of the proposal

(in noticeboards), with the pedestrian crossing to the West of the junction. A 30mph limit at that point must be in place. Concerns were expressed about the layout of the junction for traffic: do the proposals allow for slowing traffic sufficiently as it enters the B3069 at the junction? Will the new angle of egress mean that large vehicles and vans will effectively block the entrance (as they do now) when waiting to join the A351? LMPC comments will be referred back to DCC.

Concerns were expressed that in the light of complaints received from some residents the PC had not supported the environmental efforts made by a young volunteer to clean up the Worth Pond with natural reed bundles and a small solar powered fountain. It was explained that the pond itself was self-cleaning being fed from a natural spring. It is believed that the discoloration of the water in the warmer months is caused by duck effluent. The pond water clears naturally in the colder months. Experience has shown that the method to clean it up is to empty the pond, clean out the sludge, and allow the pond to refill naturally. The fish should be removed first and replaced afterwards in the clean water. This task had been carried out by the Chairman in previous years.

A representative from the Woodyhyde campsite attended and gave a short presentation on behalf of his client in sup-port of the application. He explained the necessity for and the role of the new 100% larger on site reception and shop building. This was to cater for their visitor demand for better facilities. The PC was supportive of these initiatives.

A local resident brought to the attention of the PC a re-cent problem in the HX Car Park. An individual in a motor car had recently carried out noisy circular spinning move-ments at about 5.30 pm. This problem had also been caused by a driver later on at night on previous occasions. Cllr Bu-gler confirmed that these actions were now clear from the

The PC noted the repre-sentations made to PDC by local residents and consid-ered the proposal to be very obtrusive with overlooking potential in respect of privacy of adjoining neighbours. The PC was uncertain as to the planning status of the existing commercial element and whether there would be a loss of local employment by conversion of the exist-ing workshop to a separate residential dwelling. The Clerk would seek to ensure that the timescale for PC comments was extended to cover the next meeting. The PC noted the applicants for the former application were present and gave them the indication that subject to receiving the detailed plans from PDC they had, in principle, no objections to their proposal.

other mattersThe PC noted receipt of the 2016-17 Bank Statement/

Cash book reconciliation for 31 December. Councillors ap-proved the budget for 2017 -18 and that the 2017 -18 Rate Precept would be £NIL.

The Chairman update the PC on the BT Broadband ex-tension through to Weston Farm where a cabinet had now been erected but the service was not functioning. Further work needed to be done by BT following discovery of an ob-structed duct across from their telephone exchange in the village.

Concern was expressed about the bramble growth on the opposite verge up from the Square and Compass. It was considered the NT should be approached to cut back these obstructions.

stones thrown up on the verges and the skid marks across the surface resulting from the recent manoeuvring. The PC had no simple answer other than to create expensive ob-structions within the site. It was not felt Police assistance would be forthcoming for such a low priority item. The Clerk would investigate further.

corresponDence anD other mattersThe Clerk reported back from Dorset Area Parish and

Town Councils meeting at East Lulworth on 16 January. The main concerns arose from a Presentation on Consultation on Dorset Vision of NHS Clinical Services. Some concern was expressed that the audit of this process was on the con-sultation methods and procedures rather than the outcomes. The PC noted the specific question for the Purbeck area and it was agreed that the combination of separate proposals within a single question was unhelpful and difficult to sat-isfactorily respond to if you agreed / disagreed with either. Individual councillors would make their own responses. Separate questionnaires were available in the HXVH foyer.

The PC also noted the concerns expressed at the DATPC meeting about the recent misleading Dorset CC National Press release. This had reported from external consultants managing the consultation that the public and local Parish and Town Councils overwhelmingly favoured a reorganisa-tion of the nine existing County, Unitary, and District Coun-cils into two new Unitary authorities. The Clerk had previ-ously reported back from a DAPTC meeting that there was no general support for such a proposal from P&TC’s. Four of the nine Principal Councils had now objected to the uni-tary proposals. There was great concern on the future local accountability of a proposed single Unitary Council serving towns and parishes across this large area of predominantly rural Dorset outside the Bournemouth, Poole, and Christch-urch conurbation.

The PC noted the proposals for maintenance put forward by the Centre and agreed a one-off S137 donation to the Burngate Stone Carving Centre. It would for ‘Due Diligence’ reasons request financial accounts and statements before considering any future S137 application from any organisa-tion. Cllr Sandham would review published accounts mate-rial and the Clerk would clarify with Langton Matravers PC, in whose area the Centre was, the extent if any of any grants that LMPC made or would be making to the Centre.

The PC considered the request from HXVHMC for the repair of the two street lights at the A351 junction with Hay-crafts Lane. It was agreed that the Clerk should investigate further with the local contractor’s agent and initiate a repair if the cost was reasonable.

highWays mattersThe PC noted that the DCC Regulatory Committee has

upheld objections by two Worth village frontagers and has refused to confirm the Traffic Regulation proposals agreed with their officers and the PC on behalf of all the Parish. It was regretted that the proposed improvements to traffic ac-cess, movement and safety in the village throughout the year especially for the large farm vehicles would not now take place.

The Clerk drew attention to the DCC night time 7pm-6am road closure on Sandford Road 14 February for a week and Sandford Road between B3075 and St Martins school 27 March to 7 April and East Street Corfe 24 April to 5 May. Whilst the need for road maintenance and repairs was ap-preciated it was felt that with the lengthy detours suggested a later start time would considerably reduce the inconvenience

A potentially dangerous situation had been reported to Cllrs concerning reduced visibility caused by vehicles park-ing on the bend by Leeson House on the road through Lang-ton. At this point pedestrians have to cross the road to con-tinue on a separate footway as the pavement runs out. The location is within the Langton parish and would be referred on to them.

Cllrs considered that they had made the position clear to the WMVHMC that a donation towards the funding of a de-fibrillator would only be considered if it was sited in a pub-lic place. Possible sites for the WM defibrillator unit where power and phone lines are available are outside the Village Hall, Tea Shop, or the Old Post Office.

The PC noted from the donation box receipts the large number of regular users especially the U3A who use the HX car park but rarely if ever make any donation let alone the £1 requested towards its running costs. The U3A Secretary should be contacted to make clear the possibility of this car park closing if sufficient funds from donations are not re-ceived by the PC to meet the running costs.

The PC noted that the HXVH Booking Secretary had managed on a number of occasions in 2016 to obtain a cheque for £20 from some of the wedding organisers to cov-er their usage over three days of the HX car park. The HXVH Booking Secretary should be asked if each wedding would contribute a donation of £25 towards the car park running costs.

DCC Highways should be asked to replace the yellow lines across all the areas of carriageway patching carried out under highway maintenance work.

sUBmission & format

All adverts get same amount of space (8cm x 6cm).Adverts can be sent by hard copy by post or emailed as an attachment. Graphics catered for. The cost is £8 per calendar month, Payable for 12 months in advance (£96); (or pro-rata to coincide with our January to December advertising yearly cycle).Cancellations in writing/email for refund of unused full months

The Dubber is a parish magazine run by volunteers and, as such, we regret we are unable to respond to frequent changes to adverts. However, simple changes such as address, telephone number, email (that do not affect the structural layout of the ad) and/or occasion-al seasonal ‘elements’ will be accommodated. For administration purposes, we require full name, address and telephone details (plus email if relevant). These are held on file in both printed copy and soft copy (computer) formats and this information will not be shared with any third parties.

Dubber on-lineEach month, the printed edition of The Dubber is uploaded to the internet in pdf format. Purchase of an advert in the printed edition means that it is au-tomatically included online. No extra charge is made for this. There is no option to have the on-line advert only. The on-line version may change or cease at any time and does not form part of the standard advertis-ing terms and conditions.
