The Phillips Fox Award for the Best Designed Multimedia went to

the big budget productions. The winner was the Powerhouse

Museum's federally funded Real Wild Child CD Rom. Again this

category had only a small number of entries this year.

The entries into the Andrew Fabinyi Award for best designed book

for Secondary Education Purposes caused the judges some con­

cern . Their comment that "colour hysteria has swept through the

secondary publishing industry" seems to sum up the general

trend to over use production values and under use good design

which has resulted in no winner being awarded to this category.

I was particularly pleased to see the Young Designer's Award

shared by the avant garde styling of Chris Holt's Raw & Melanie Calabretta's more traditional designs for Pied Piper of Hamelin and Fusion. However, it was noticed by the panel that

some discriminatory work practices were evident in the acknowl­

edgment of in-house designers compared to freelancers . If the

publishing industry is serious in celebrating design, there should

be a policy which acknowledges all designers, whether they be

in-house or consultant.

David Gaunt is the co-owner ofGieebooks in Glebe, Sydney. He is

a board member for the Sydney Writer's Festival, the convenor of

the ABA copyright committees, and is actively involved in industry

matters to market and promote books widely. Despite his gender,

David is a self-confessed reading group freak.

Russell Jeffery is the Design Manager at HarperCollinsPublishers,

where he is also Art Director for Golden Press. He has been in the

publishing industry, both as a designer and an illustrator, for over

10 years. He has built up sound experience in all areas, from

children's, mass market, literature, children's activity books,

business and education , as well as point-of-sale materials. He is

also experienced in multimedia and internet design, and has

worked on all book formats, from the airport novel through to

upmarket, illustrated books.

Denise Ryan holds the position of Publisher: Special Projects at

Addison Wesley Longman. Denise commenced her publishing

career with Methuen in Sydney in the mid-8os after a varied career

in education in Departments of Education in Victoria, South

Australia and New South Wales. Denise's expertise in literacy

education has been demonstrated through the highly successful

books for children and their teachers that she has published and

continues to publish for Australian and overseas markets .
