4. Construction on the Colosseum began under Emperor Vespasian (69-79) and was completed under his son Titus (79-81) in80 AD
The site chosen was a flat area on the floor of a low valley between theCaelian,EsquilineandPalatine Hills
Amphitheater is public building used for spectator sports, games and displays.
Amphitheater is round a oval in shape.
5. 6. It is a circular structure that occupies a site east of the Roman Forum.
This Amphitheater was built to organize gladiator contests the show(munera), dramas and games like hunting animals (venatio), constructing mock sea battle and the public could also view it in the open, and cheer their favorites.
7. It has been estimated that about 500,000 people died in the Colloseum games
The collosseum is elliptical shape.
It measured 48metres high, 188 metres long and 156 metres wide
The colloseum had a seating capacity for 50,000 spectators
8. Seating was divided into different sections
Above the podium was the maenianum primum, for the other Roman aristocrats who were not in senate
Third level ( maenianum secundum) divided into three section : lower part (wealthy) , upper part ( for poor citizens, a third wooden structure at the very top of the building.
9. The arena or floor of the amphitheater was 258 feet long and 150 feet wide. Around the arena's edge stood the "podium" wall about 15 feet high.
