ROMANCOINSFROMTHEBISHOP’SWOODHOARD,found1895

The Bishop’s Wood Hoard of Roman coins was discovered in 1895 near Ross-on-Wye, justacrosstheHerefordshireborderandwithinthesurroundingsoftheForestofDean.Agroupofworkmenwereundertaking the repairofa roadwhen they struckanearthenwarevesselcontainingthecoins.Thehoardwaspublishedinthe1896editionoftheNumismaticChronicle,and also discussed in the editorial of the Numismatic Circular in November of that year.Althoughatotalof17,550coinswerelistedinthehoard’sinitialpublication,manyofthecoinsweregiventomuseumsandinstitutionsandtheportionnowbeingsoldhere,containing1,661coins,andtherestoredvesselthatcontainedthem,hasremainedinthefamilyoftheoriginallandowner since their discovery in 1895. The hoard is composed almost entirely of bronzecoinsoftheConstantinianfamily(exceptforsingleexamplesofClaudiusGothicus,DiocletianandMaximian)andwecansurmisethatitwasdepositedafterAD337astherearemanycoinsofConstantiusII,whohadreceivedthetitleofAugustusinthatyear,includedwithinit.Thepublicationofthehoardin1896listeditscontentsasfollows:

Theoriginalintentionofthehoardandwhyitwasdepositedatthefindspotisuncertain. Itispossible that thearea inquestionwasoccupiedbyRomansoldiersat the timeand,givenits size, ithasbeensuggested that thehoard formedpartofamilitary treasure, intendedaspaymentforthelegions.Whatevertheoriginalpurposeofthecoins,thehoardisafascinatingprimarysourceofinformationforthemintsemployedinsupplyingBritainwithcoinage.
