Kathy Bucklew

As President of the Board of Directors at Anchor House Ministries, I have spent this

year relying on God for the many needs that have faced us and He has not let me

down! My husband, Bill, and I raised 24 boys in a foster live-in facility much like An-

chor House and our hearts are tender toward their plight and circumstances. I pray reg-

ularly that God would grant me, and the rest of the distinguished Board of Directors,

wisdom and discernment as we conduct the affairs of Anchor House. I also thank God

for our faithful supporters and friends who have partnered with us in saving the lives of

the young boys at Anchor House, giving them safety, support, love, and hope.

This past year we have experienced unprecedented gifts of resources, time, donations,

and prayer coverage from our supporters and friends. We have maintained the highest

population of resident boys in our history. We have, with the help of our friends and supporters,

planted many plants to make Anchor House look beautiful. The residences have taken on the ap-

pearance of a warm welcoming home that the boys can be proud of as they anxiously arrive the

first day. We have seen the Lord’s hand in extending our resources as gifts in kind and discounts

of love have allowed us to remodel Troxel with new windows, shutters, bedroom drywall and

pavers.

We have been blessed with delightful surprises in response to news coverage, such as the dona-

tion that will be the resource for our kitchen remodel. Our Board of Directors has worked hard at

evaluating the best use of the kitchen space so that boys can learn to cook, and staff can interact

with them while cooking supper, much like a normalized home environment. We are excited to

embark on this remodel in the fall and will be unveiling our exciting plans and wonderful project

partners in the near future!

At our annual banquet on October 9th, 2014, we enjoyed hearing the heart and passion of our di-

rector, Dr. Joe Davis. All the passion and heartfelt desire to serve and give to Anchor House has

been the catalyst, the tipping point to the many successes we have had this year.

Selecting a highlight of this past year is a tough choice, but for me it has been the purchase of the

Barnabas House. Thanks to our partners and supporters who have promised to continue support

through the long haul, we are able to be the very first home of its kind, serving the boys who have

aged out of the foster care system and need a place to go where they live with a life coach and

family. It is a natural step to help them make the most of those first work or college years and

coach them to responsible, Godly adulthood.

A big thank you to the many churches, organizations, and individuals who have made this year

for us and the boys at Anchor House.

The Board of Directors know that with our growth and successes comes greater responsibility

and accountability. We are taking that seriously as we commit to prayer this next year and ask

you to do the same for us. We know that our Lord has brought us to this place of strength and ca-

pacity because the need is so great. May the Lord bless you and bring us to your remembrance at

just the right time! Be blessed.

In His Service,

Kathy Bucklew

Report from the Board President

Page 3: Anchor House Ministries · 2015-08-07 · Kathy Bucklew As President of the Board of Directors at Anchor House Ministries, I have spent this year relying on God for the many needs

“Wow, is this really my room? I have never been in a room this nice. Are you sure this

is for me?” These were the words of one of our newest boys as he entered one of the

recently remodeled rooms at Anchor House. Since the last annual report we have been

very busy upgrading our facilities and expanding operations. Outside we have lined the

entrance with over two hundred azaleas on the other side of our previously planted

palm trees. We have accentuated our entrance with a brand new sign showing our new

logo as literally “a sign of change.” We have placed all new windows in every room in

Troxel Hall (43 windows to be exact!) to both improve our appearance and conserve

energy bills. We have laid brick over the concrete entrance to Troxel Hall and given it

a new doorway also. We have put shutters on the windows to make it homey and hung

hammocks outside under the shade trees for boys to find rest. Inside we have painted every room,

refitting every room with new furniture, even making a “man-cave” complete with rock façade in

the Troxel common room. In the game room we have acquired pool tables, table hockey, ping

pong, corn hole, and foosball to encourage constructive fun. And we are not done. We have hired

a contractor to completely redo our kitchen area in Troxel Hall also. Every day we continue to

makeover Anchor House. Our hope is our boys will see that “makeovers” are what we do here at

Anchor House.

In order for makeovers to mean anything, makeovers must last. For this reason we have invested

in the future of those who come to us through the purchase of the Barnabas House. The Barnabas

House is Polk County’s first transitional house for boys who age out of foster care. Our vi-

sion is to create a safe home with an emphasis on employment and daily devotionals. We provide

house parents who engage the boys in understanding the Scriptures and a job coach who finds

them jobs. The job coach provides them with on-site job training while creating a safety net for

those who struggle with employment issues by being a liaison with the employer and a teacher to

the resident. The approach to finding 18 year old boys jobs and giving them a safe place while

they learn their jobs grants these boys the real possibility of success that so often eludes boys from

foster care situations. For boys without parents or removed from their homes, we become the safe-

ty nets that increase their chances for success dramatically both spiritually and vocationally.

You may be wondering after all of this, “How in the world did Anchor House pay for all of this?”

The Lord has blessed us with over 100 new donors in the last year. Many gave generously and

sacrificially to our boys. As a result, our income surpassed $1 million for the first time in Anchor

House history. We were in the black over $274,000 for the year, and we are moving forward with

plans for even greater expansion in the future to help even more children. Some of this is a little

scary when we consider how much we need to come in monthly to continue our quest. In fact, we

often feel as if we are literally on the edge of a cliff looking over into the gorge asking God to

meet our needs in this awesome calling. Needless to say, we could not do it without you. But what

an opportunity – to see lives changed and hope renewed. I hope that this year you will consider

helping us like never before as we continue to try to help these children for Christ. In the words of

our Savior, “In as much as you have done to the least of one of these, you have done it unto me.”

Together, we can boldly say, “Today we have made a difference in children’s lives. With God’s

help, tomorrow we will make an even greater and perhaps miraculous difference.” Thanks again

for allowing Anchor House to “love those who have been forgotten in this world.”

In Christ,

Dr. Joe Davis

Report from the Program Director

Our census remained a record high for a second consecutive year. We are currently

reinforcing personnel to sustain current census and future services for boys in need

of a home.

Anchor House has partnered with Southeastern University Preaching Team. These

students are on fire for God and have been a blessing to our boys. Students facili-

tate group discussion and afterwards interact with our boys by playing games and

mentoring. Families First of Florida has partnered with Anchor House by providing

an on-site therapeutic program for individual counseling, group therapy, and life

skills group. In addition to these services, spiritual development is encouraged through church

attendance, midweek youth services, and chapel nights. Anchor House has developed a strong

incentive program which encourages youth to participate in general life skills, recreational op-

portunities, and spiritual development. Our on campus work program has grown exponentially.

Our campus yard work, facility painting and other jobs are completed by our boys. Several

mentoring partners have reached out to us, including individuals and organizations such as

Idols Aside Ministries. Community outreach has increased to include YMCA memberships,

participation at local churches, city & Christian sport leagues, and employment opportunities

for our youth. I am proud to report that we have boys who are either employed or completing

internship programs with Publix Supermarkets, and several other youth are actively searching

for employment.

Anchor House is undergoing an accreditation process which reflects a level of professionalism.

Our staff, volunteers, and mentors are invested in our program, and, as a result, families within

our community are opening their homes to our boys.

Special thanks to our Board of Directors, Executive Director, Dr. Joe Davis, and partners for

helping Anchor House increase with excellence.

With thanks,

Fredric Velez

The following groups and individuals have provided ongoing or large one-time services and activities this year.

Highlights from 2014-2015

Barnabas House: By the grace of God, Anchor House was able to acquire and transform a

single-family home into a transitional home for boys who have exited the

traditional foster care setting after turning eighteen. We pray that this

extension of Anchor House Ministries will foster life change in the name

of Jesus as we are able to meet and care for an additional number of boys

through Barnabas House.

Facility Upgrades: Anchor House is blessed to have a force of volunteers and staff mem-

bers who have worked long hours to beautify our facility. The most

notable improvements have been lining the driveway with azaleas, add-

ing hammocks, and installing a brand new sign in front of the facility.

Game Room Improvements: Our recreation room has also seen some exciting improvements! Our

boys have been enjoying the new foosball, ping pong, air hockey, and

pool tables. There have also been updates to the computers. Having these activ-

ities on campus promotes productive uses of time and teamwork within the

house.

Internship/Job Opportunities: Publix has partnered with Anchor House to open opportunities for our

boys to gain job experience, learn and develop new skills, and get into the

rhythm of employment. The availability of internships is a huge asset for

boys who desire to get a foot in the door and begin laying foundations for a future

career.

Annual Report

Anchor House Ministries

Planned gifts have the ability to keep on giving - even after we have passed this earth to our heavenly home. Would you consider making Anchor House a part of your will or estate plan? We have spe-cialists in this area that would love to help you create a legacy of caring for our boys. For those of you who have supported us for so long, wouldn’t it be wonderful to give a gift that continues your desire to support changing young men’s lives for Christ? If you would like to continue the giving you have started, or if you would like to become a new giver, contact us and let us help you to create a legacy too. I have no doubt that it pleases the Lord, who responded to those who helped others in need by saying, “For in as much as you did it to one of the least of one of these you have done it un-to me.” Thanks for looking after these young children who truly are “the least of one of these” (Matt. 25:31-40).
