Daniel's daughter - Harriet - married my Great Grandfather - John Tate - and I got her birth certificate because I needed to confirm dates for Harriet.I think the family came from the Stonham area in Suffolk - there seem to be a number of villages in that area that begin Stonham and I know Harriet was born in Stonham Parva and died in Stonham Aspal. If you follow the link below you will find details of John & Harriet's grave

http://www.stonhamaspal.co.uk/int/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=6

When I obtained Harriet's certificate I had some trouble in deciphering the names but with some help from my husband's colleagues (he works for HM Land Registry and they are used to dealing with & reading old documents)we got the name Dolipiel and I am lead to believe this may have a Scandinavian origin but I am not sure whether that is accurate.

If you have any information that you think may help me in going back further with Harriet's side, I would be very interested.CheersJenny [email protected]

I have a Daniel BENTICK who married Sophia ROBINSON at Thornham Magna 5th December 1843. My main research interest is the ROBINSON line but am also interested in those who married into it.

The foregoing marriage record in the parish register gives no indication as to the home parish of Daniel. The couple disappear from the T.M. registers after the marriage and I assume that they went to Daniel's normal place of residence - wherever that may have been.

The recent exchange on the BANTICK name has reignited my interest and I am wondering whether anyone on thelist is connected to, or has any knowledge of, the said Daniel and or his descendants?

Hi Monique I got back to the material you sent me recently this morning and decided to do another search of the NSW recordsand found some additional entries for births and Daniel's marriage to Susan Elliott.

Source Citations I used a wildcard * in the searches and that brought up the missing entries. As you will see, there were some innovative spellings of his name and even a transition from Daniel to David!

Daniel Bantock, born circa 1799, in Great Ashfield, was the son of John and Ann Bantock, (formerly Jacob, nee Mann). John and Ann had two sons, John born circa 1790, and Daniel as previously stated. John Bantock was born in Great Ashfield, in 1760 circa. Ann Mann was born in Bury St. Edmunds, in 1760 circa. Unfortunately there are gaps in the parish registers of Great Ashfield, between 1750 and 1780. The Bishops Transcripts for that period are nearly impossible toread. So I guess the parents of John Bantock will remain a mystery.

Children from this marriage were:

"Dear MoniqueThank you for your e-mail re. Daniel Bantock. The information that I have on this line is as follows:

Children of Daniel and Sarah Bantock (nee Bugg).Walter, born 12.9.1822. Maria, bapt 12.9.1824. Henry, born 2.4.1826. Raynor (Raymond), bapt 7.6.1829. John, born 29.7.1831. All were born or baptised in Great Ashfield, SFK.

The Bishops Transcripts for that period are nearly impossible to read. So I guess the parents of John Bantock will remain a mystery. There are quite a few Bantocks/Bantics etc, in Boyds marriage index of Suffolk.

Monique, can you tell me please, how do I go about locating details of Daniel Bantock's marriage to Susan ??????. Also how do I go about locating the death/burial place of Daniel Bantock?. And finally, not wishing to show my ignorance or insult Sydney, but where/what is St. Lawrence, Sydney.?

Kind RegardsTerry Stretton"

General Notes: Two brothers Samuel and John both had daughters named Hannah so which is the one aged 14 who was raped by Ishmael Pryor?

The most likely is the daughter of Samuel and Mary as they were named as witnesses!

However this Hannah was born too early to be her, her cousin Hannah was born about 1655 is the right age so maybe she was visiting or staying with her Uncle Samuel, Aunt Mary and cousin Hannah at the time of the Rape.

Records on SEAX (Essex Archives) will need to be viewed to check this.

I then found the will of the Thomas that was born in Hitcham in 1498 and discovered he had more children than those mentioned in the database.

General Notes: History of the Bantock Family and origins of the name

1. Introduction

It appears from Eastern Counties Archives A.D. 1315 a youth of about 17 years of age apparently of good birth and with apparel marked.............. was thrown ashore at what is now called North Isle, Maldon, Essex. Along withhim on the shore were found three heavy oaken chests containing garments and silver and relics from the Holy Land. (Presumably on one chest was found a crude picture of the Virgin and Child).

The youth by his courage and energy achieved the then East Anglian honour of being called 'The Van-Tock' throughout the country from the Thames to the Humber.

In the towns of Maldon, Colchester and Saffron Waldon, Swaffham, Yalden, Saxmundham, Aldboro, Norwich, Boston and Grimsby are to be found descendants of this youth under the varying names of Bantock, Bantick, Bundock, Bundick, Bantoff, Bantoft, Banlock, Bantose, Bantacke, Bantofte, Bannocke, Bantoste, Banstock, Bandtocke, Bentick, Bentinck .etc. This fact gives rise to the fact that the Royal line of Bentinck also came from

The Bentinck's are the Royal line, (From the Queen Mums family, and to date the exact connection to the more humble Bantick's has not been found, although there are some who maintain this is true)

"However, there is a family in Wicken Bonhunt (in between Clavering and Newport) called Bontoft and I have often wondered about the origins of their name. I had assumed it had similar origins to Bonhunt. This is said to come from the Latin word 'funta', meaning Roman remains (and a possible villa site has been identified in the area). Bonhunt was the original settlement, sited near where the motorway now crosses the road outside the present village and near St Helen's Chapel, a little barn which is all that remains of the medieval village. Originally it was an important Saxon site with some royal connections - royal in Saxon terms that is. I suppose Bontoft is slightly different, lacking the funta bit, but it's still quite likely to be a possible variation of the Bantoft/Bantock's etc" ...

(This extract above was taken from an email received April/May 2002 from Jacqueline Cooper, Essex Historian, author, & family historian)

(The history of the Van tock was found in some correspondence between Thomas Bantock and some Bantocks of Cornwall with whom he was doing some business in the 1870's.) This letter was unearthed again by Eric Bantock of Shifnal, Shropshire in 1947 and sent to a distant cousin of Julian (Angus) Bantock.

The Bantock name is believed to be of Dutch origins and could very well be an anglicised form of Van Toch, Van Hoch or Van der Hook, (meaning from a high place) Van der Hoch, or Van Hoek. These families lived predominantly around the areas of the Hook or Hoek) of Holland, and The Hague (Gravenhage). There are still many of these surnames in those areas today.

There is a Bentdijk in Overijssel, which, in my opinion, may be a phonetic root for Bantick and Bantock. Withoutscript, d and t sound alike. In addition, drainage experts from the lowlands did go to East Anglia to help drain the fens. Bentdijk dates from the 1300's.

During the last 2,000 years by social, political and economic movements the influence of the Netherlands on British development has been considerable.

Many British and Dutch people have a common ancestry from which they have inherited similar qualities. Their passionate love of liberty has made them the pioneers of modern democracy and religious toleration. 'Nations of shopkeepers' both, their genius for commerce built up the strength which finally broke the power of Louis XIV and Napoleon and stimulated the love of enterprise which has made them explorers and colonists in the world.

Before Caesar's conquest of Britain, there were Low Dutch people who had immigrated into Britain from Flanders, because of floods; the Frisians conducted most of Britain's import and export trade before the invasions of the Anglo Saxons in the fifth and sixth centuries. In the eighth century, England was a centre of learning.

Some missionaries, like Willibrod and Boniface, worked among the Frislans. Then in the ninth and tenth centuries, the learned people of England - Alcuin among them - were driven by the attacks of the Danes to the Continent. In the latter half of the tenth century, the foreign trade of London laid the foundations of its future commercial greatness. Because of its relations with the merchants of the Dutch towns of Tiel and Dordrecht - the greatest commercial centres of that time - England's prosperity increased.

Following the Norman Conquest, there came many Flemish weavers who had a large share in the development of England. Dutch immigrants started sheep-farming, which was to contribute so much to England's early greatness. The Flemish type of industrial organisation inspired the formation of the English guilds of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. In the twelfth century Dutch merchants had their own private wharves in London and were members of the Guildhall. At the time of the Conquest, many Anglo-Saxon refugees settled in the Low Countries. Thomas a Becket escaped to Holland. Time and time again Dutch soldiers have fought on English soil, where some of their descendants now are. In 1165, for example, Henry II fought the Welsh with Flemish and Brabant troops.

With Dutch help, England had, soon after the period of Edward I, become the chief wool-growing country in Europe and the services of the cloth manufacturers of the Netherlands were promised: "They shall feed on fat beef and mutton till nothing but fullness shall stint their stomachs." Again, thousands of weavers came over as instructors and assistants to the English. England at this time was still a farming country, and the capital and enterprise of the Dutch were also courted, with the result that such artisans as linen-weavers, feltmakers and clock makers were introduced. Dutch printing presses became famous at an early date.

Page 24: Ancestors of Zophiel Edith BANTICK · 2019-10-07 · Ancestors of Zophiel Edith BANTICK First Generation 1. Zophiel Edith BANTICK [22146], daughter of Daniel BANTICK (Publican) [18388]

The first complete English Bible came from Holland, and Caxton learned his trade in the Netherlands. Many English writers like Wyclif, Chaucer and Thornas More spent some time in Holland and many of their countrymentook refuge in the Netherlands during the Wars of the Roses. The closest relations between England and the Dutchexisted in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. England was still short of all sorts of manufactures and most of the trade was in Dutch hands; even English fish-markets were supplied by Dutch fishermen. All this stimulated a close contact with Dutch methods, institutions and industries.

Intense Dutch immigration prepared the way for a Dutch prince on the British throne and for a large part England owes its subsequent prosperity to the effect of religious persecutors in the Netherlands. In 1527, when England's population numbered 5,000,000, London alone had 15,000 Flemings. In 1562, 40,000 more arrived and as many inthe following years. On the other hand, royal action against the Plymouth Brethren drove English Protestants to Holland; but Cromwell again sent for Dutch divines as teachers. Thousands of English Protestants were to help theDutch in their fight with the Spaniards, and English religious separatists went to Leyden and some sailed from there with the Mayflower to found New England. The Quakers, like many other sects, were products of Dutch sectarianism. William Penn's wife and mother were Dutch.

Dutch gunsmiths, tapestry-makers, glaziers, printers and especially skilled drainage workers brought many new arts. Dutch engineers helped to drain the fens of Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and many other counties - one Dutch engineer alone reclaimed about 400,000 acres. Dutch immigrants helped to develop Manchester and the cotton industry; Newcastle and the manufacture of steel; and Sheffield, where they introduced knife-making. Dutch feltmakers laid the foundation of the hat industry; Dutchmen made the cables and cordage for the Royal Navy; they introduced paper, soap, saltpetre, silk and lace-making. They took to England that most important commodity - tea!

How the Dutch were influenced by English culture we can understand when we remember that among the English writers who lived in Holland were such outstanding people as Thomas Eliot, Thomas Wyatt, John Locke, Marlowe, Raleigh, Cartwright and Ben Jonson. Butler and John Payne took their theatre cornpany over to Leyden in 1636.

Stalwart, pioneering Dutch folk have, in their scores of thousands, moved to the overseas countries of the English speaking Family of Nations. They have always proved a worthy, stabilising force in these new lands.

In 1688, Williarn of Orange was invited to England 'to restore English liberty and to protect the Protestant religion.' And after the death of William, close literary relations existed between the two countries. Bearing in mind this long cultural interaction between England and the Netherlands, there is no doubt that the Dutch have feltthemselves to be something more than mere allies of Britain in their struggle against evil.

One further point of supreme interest is that Salic Law - a Continental law which excludes females from dynastic succession does not operate in the Netherlands where, as in England, a queen may reign in her own right. Thus both countries observe the Zelophehad law of ancient Israel, whereby a woman may sit on the throne where there is no male heir.

The National flag of the Netherlands carries three horizontal bands of red, white and blue. The Dutch arms have also a significant affinity with the Royal arms of Britain.

Whereas the Bentinck family (those on the Royalty branch) originated in the province of Overyssel in the United Provinces of the Netherlands.

It has been said by some researchers that the Banticks and Bantocks are related in some way to the Dukes of Portland /Cavendish-Bentinck's to the Royal family, it does seem quite likely as the various variations of the nameall originated in the general area of Overyssel in the United Provinces of the Netherlands. No proof of this connection has been found that i know of to date, so feel free to form your own conclusions here. Here is a little bit about them to whet the appetite, !

The Dukes of Portland

The Bentinck family originates in the province of Overyssel in the United Provinces of the Netherlands.

The First Earl of Portland, Hans Willem Bentinck, was one of William of Orange's most trusted advisers and served for a period as Ambassador to Paris.

Page 25: Ancestors of Zophiel Edith BANTICK · 2019-10-07 · Ancestors of Zophiel Edith BANTICK First Generation 1. Zophiel Edith BANTICK [22146], daughter of Daniel BANTICK (Publican) [18388]

Source Citations On his death in 1709, his son Henry became the 2nd Earl of Portland. Henry served as Colonel of the 1st Troop of the Life Guards and between 1705 and 1709 as Whig MP for Southampton and Hampshire. In 1716 he was made Marquess of Titchfield and the 1st Duke of Portland.

The title passed to his younger brother, Count Willem Bentinck, in 1726. Willem, apparently 'the handsomest manin England', made quite a catch in 1734 when he married Lady Margaret Cavendish Harley, only child and heir of the 2nd Earl of Oxford, a union resulting in many additions to the Portland estate including Welbeck Abbey, near Worksop.

The 3rd Duke, William Henry Bentinck, served as Whig MP for Wembley between 1761 and 1762 and became Prime Minister in April 1783. Appointed Chancellor of Oxford University in 1792, he served as Home Secretary between 1794 and 1801, the year in which Cavendish was added to the family name by Royal Licence. William served again as Prime Minister between 1807 and 1809, although poor health meant that power effectively fell to Canning and Castlereagh.

The 4th Duke, William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck Scott, had an interest in naval architecture and shipbuilding and operated his own shipyard at Troon. He exerted a powerful effect on the development of the sailing battlefleet in the vital years after the Napoleonic Wars.

At the death of the 4th Duke in 1879, the title passed to John Cavendish-Bentinck Scott. In 1881, the 5th Duke's granddaughter, Nina Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck married Claude George Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore. She bore a total of ten children, of which the ninth, Elizabeth, was later to marry George VI and in turn bear Queen Elizabeth II.

The 6th Duke, Arthur Cavendish-Bentinck, held the title from 1879 until his death in 1943. His sister, Lady Ottoline Cavendish-Bentinck, was widowed in the same year and later formed an association with the influential philosopher, mathematician, pacifist and co-founder of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Bertrand Russell, the 3rd Earl Russell.

Two more Dukes held the title before the 9th, William Cavendish-Bentinck, who died in 1990. The 12th Earl of Portland, Timothy Bentinck, son of the 11th Earl, is perhaps most widely known to radio listeners as David Archerin the world's longest established broadcast drama, "The Archers".

The Cavendish-Bentinck family has served Great Britain in politics, art, naval architecture, war and diplomacy forover three centuries. Theirs is a fine tradition and an example of service with which the Officers and Ship's Company of the eighth HMS PORTLAND are proud to be associated.

(There may be a link to the Banticks/Bantocks in there also.) --------------------------------------------2. The identification of the Bantock family, as far as can be derived from a record of prior to 1540, is that of a large family of 24 children, the issue of one Titus Bantock.

On the death of the parent, the issue quarreled over the division of the property, and dispersed themselves throughthe country.

The Direct line, however, had settled themselves at Maldon, West Ham and Stratford, Essex.

The next direct line brings the family to 1666, with branches maintaining intercourse and friendship, and established at STRATFORD, Maldon, and Colchester, Essex. The head of the family lived at Stratford and is reputed to have been seventh in a direct line of that Christian name 'Hugh'. This implies a long continuous dwelling in the western part of Essex. This branch seems to have largely adopted the spelling as 'Bantick'.

It is now known that the tree we had originally thought to have started with Hugh Bantock's son Titus, by his first wife actually starts a long time before that. Hugh was next married to Anne Browne in 1650. They had a daughterAnne who died in 1654. Hugh Bantock died in 1698. This tree now goes back well into the 1300's s in Hitcham...and from there back to Holland it is presumed...

Of the seven generations of Banticks bearing the name first name of Hugh, the last of these died in 1812 and had quarreled with his brother Titus who had been accused of incest with his sister Ursula.

3. West Ham seems to have been their principal residence and if you take a look inside the West Ham church, you will see on the walls and floor several monuments to Bantocks, all 18th Century.

4. The Tree goes on for numerous more pages, One of the last we know of is the family of George Bantock, who married Martha Gair in 1906. Their children's names were, Robert, George, Jane, Roger, Charles, Martha, Ellen, and Caroline.------------------------------------------------------------------First, about the name BUNDOCK. It appears that it comes from the name BENEDICT, one of the Popes' names, through the spelling BENDECK. Some sources say that BENDECK was the Dutch version; others say it was a French version of the name Benedict. Local pronunciation then eventually changed the vowel sounds, ending up with the final versions of both BUNDOCK and BANTOCK.

Throughout the Medieval period of history, there were no last names (surnames) at all. The earliest records in Essex, England are from the 1100's. Names sound like those out of Lord of the Rings, such as Beowulf, Alwin and Thor!

Last names were used by the early 1300's, however. There are very few existing records back to those years, but lo and behold, I have found what I believe is the very first record of a BUNDOCK in Essex. It is a record, in Latin, from a tax list, showing JOHANNES BONDOK living in the village of Saint Lawrence, Essex. Look for it on a map to be just southeast of Maldon. The tax list is from the year 1327. He's paying taxes by then, so he must have been born before 1300.

The next record I found of an early BUNDOCK is an Isabel BONDOK, from the year 1376. She, or her parents, had obviously survived the Plague years of 1348/9. She is in the Maldon area as well. This doesn't mean that our families had their start there, of course; these are simply the earliest surviving records.

I don't know that anyone will ever be able to piece together the exact genealogy of the BUNDOCK line, but here are some generalities that I've been able to deduce. First, the BUNDOCK/BANTOCK families were not originallycity dwellers. I have found no records of our families in major cities like London, Chelmsford or Colchester generally until the early 1600's. The earliest records show the majority of families living in rural, central Essex, ina triangular area between Chelmsford, Brentwood and Southend-on-sea. From there, they seemed to spread north and south along the Roman Road (an ancient brick road connecting Ipswich, Suffolk with London.) It's basically where highway A12 is now. The families stayed southeast of the road; there are very few families living outside ofthis boundary for 400 years.

One family of BUNDOCKs crossed the Thames and lived in Kent by the middle of the 1700's. Once the railroad was introduced in the 1820's, however, travel became much, much easier for everyone. The BUNDOCK and BANTOCK families spread throughout other counties in southern England. Some moved to Ireland. By the 1840's, emigration to Canada and Australia were common.

Those who travelled north, between Ipswich and Colchester, had the harder sounding German consonants in the name. BUNDOCK and BANT(D)OCK names are found in this area. The softer, French consonants, BUNDOCHand other spellings, are found in the more southern regions of Essex.

By the 1600's, the vowel sounds are generally agreed upon to be either BUNDOCK or BANTOCK. There are stilloccasional variations of the pronunciations of the final vowel, so one can find BUNDICK or BANTICK spellings.

[[Extract taken From the Internet Surnames Database

Surname: BantockThis is a very unusual surname. Recorded in a number of forms including Bantick, Bantock, Bentick, Bentinck and Benting, as well as possibly Banting, Bunten, Bontein, Bontne, and Bunting, in most spellings it is regarded asEnglish, but is almost certainly of medieval Dutch or Flemish origins, of which there are at least two. The first is from the word 'bontyng', which in ancient times described a small bird like a sparrow, and hence was given as a nickname to somebody who was small and rotund, or possibly given the robust humour of the period, the completereverse. The derivation of bontyng is from a pre 7th century Dutch-German element 'bunz', meaning 'little barrel'. This word is recorded in ancient times as the first component of the English place name Buntingford, a village in Hertfordshire. The second possible origin is from the Dutch personal name Bent, a short form of Benedict, to which was added the suffix '-ing or -inck' meaning people, and hence describing the Benting or Bentinck families. William Bentinck, the 1st Earl of Portland, was friend and advisor to William of Orange in 1688. A third possible option for some nameholders is that it may be locational from some now 'lost' medieval place called 'Beonet-ock' or similar, meaning the place of the bent grass, but of this we have no proof at all. Early examples of the surname recording taken from ancient rolls and registers in England include: John Buntying in the Hundred rolls of the county of Sussex in the year 1273, Elizabeth Bantick who married Richard Buckham at St Dunstans in the East,

Pleasant St. in Woburn near Green St. in 1868 - a 'carpenter and builder'.

Incidents in the life of George W. Kimaball In October '64 he was given a pass to go to Washington to visit his brother Israel. In a letter to mother from Ft.McHenry dated October 4, he speaks about a call on the President as follows: "I saw President Lincoln and stood beside him for five minutes. He is a noble looking man. His picture does not do him justice." In August 1864 four Confederate Spies were brought to Ft. McHenry to be executed and a gallow was ordered for that purpose. George Kimball had it made in readiness for its grim work. The old saying "there's many a slip twixt the cup and the lip" was however exemplified in this instance as he wrote home unde date of August 28. 1864 (Fort McHenry), "We expected to see those men hung this morning but we got dissapointed in it as their reprieve came last night but I did my duty. I had the machine all ready for them and was dissapointed in not seeing how it worked. I guess there never was a job that was watched more closely than the building of this gallows or that caused more talk, but it works like a charm. I had the ropes all up and we supposed that they would be hung but the President has seen fit to have their sentence changed to imprisonment. I think he shows too much leniency for I think if anyone whould be hung it is a spy!" George's comment on this episode is rather remarkable as he was not only a devout Christian but one of the kindest hearted of men. It reflects the feeling of the norther soldier at that most critical time when the Union cause was rather dubious. (James Melvin Kimball) See his father for 1850 census listing.

Alice's step mother, Marjorie Beach's family owned ILLICO which was a string of Independant Gas stations in Illinois. Marjorie wanted to make sure that Alice inherited her 1/3rd of Illlico when she died, so she formally adopted Alice in 1938. Later, after Marjorie passed away, this proved to be quite helpful in asserting Marjorie's wishes over those of her other family members, who would be just as happy if the ownership stayed in the family.

History of the Kimball Family in America from 1634 to 1897 And of it's ancestors THE KEMBALLS or KEMBOLDES of England

By Leonard Allison Morrison A.M. and Stephen Paschall Sharples S.B. Published in 1897

These next 10 pages are right out of the book. I could not have written a better introduction.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION.

The Kimballs have long been plentiful in Ipswich, Mass., the old nesting ground, and from there they have spread to all parts of New England, and New York; many are in the great West, a few in the South, and some have gone to the Dominion of Canada. Nearly every section of the North American continent has its representatives of this Puritan stock.

Some of the name remained in England when the Kemballs emigrated to these shores in 1634. The family has never been numerous there, and is almost unknown outside of the parent county of Suffolk.

It was my intention to write only a history of the descendants of Benjamin Kimball, son of Richard, the Emigrant, It was found that in order to do this, much maternal relating to other branches must be collected. It was thought best to utilise this material. And by the advice and desire of members of the family, I was induced to undertake thehistory of all the Kimballs in America. The task expanded, and soon assumed enormous proportions. Richard Kimball, with his eleven children, made a large family; all his children married except one, and she may have married. For more than three hundred years, they have obeyed literally the injunction "to multiply and replenish the earth." The tree throve after it was transplanted. The material for the history for two hundred years was very scant. It was buried in court and town records or had to be gathered from the dim traditions of the past. Much of this information was collected before scarce a living representative of the race was reached. The family for two hundred years had lived in New England and left hardly a fragment of their history behind them save that recordedon the tombstones and the town books. Men had fought through the wars of the country from the affray at Bloody Brook, where Caleb Kimball was killed, down to the War of the Rebellion, where on many a hard-fought field the Kimballs were to be found. Information in regard to the last three generations, and especially in regard to the present one, was more easy, or should have been more easy, to procure.

It was sought to obtain this from the public records and by correspondence with living members of the family. In the midst of this wearisome and seemingly unending task, it was my good fortune to learn that Professor Stephen Paschall Sharples of Cambridge, Mass., whose wife is a descendant of Benjamin Kimball, was collecting and arranging information in regard to the family. After some correspondence, we decided that we could do better

Source Citations work together than separately. Thus we became co-workers and co-editors. The field was abundantly large for our united efforts, and by this co-operation, a better, more thorough and accurate work has been produced than either of us could have prepared alone.

Genealogists and historians are born and not made. Professor Sharples, with his powerful natural bent in that direction, with his quick, strong, retentive memory, by his long training as an expert in another line, by his nearness to many public records, and by his business carrying him to all parts of New England and by his access tomany public records, original documents, and sources of information not readily accessible to me, was able to correct many errors in the accounts already published, to detect some in our manuscripts, and to verify much workalready done This labour he pursued to such a remarkable extent that this record is believed to be as nearly perfect as it is possible to make it.

Together we had collected a vast amount of facts, statistics, and material for biographies. Professor Sharples had taken charge of this so far as arranging it in genealogical order. In 1893, he made a copy of the work, wrote and inserted the biographical matter in the proper places, and prepared the manuscript for the printer. But for various reasons, the work was delayed. We still kept collecting material. New avenues opened before us, missing brancheswere discovered, and still more important, many missing links were found. In some instances, the identification of a single ancestor added over a hundred names to the record. So much additional matter was collected that it became evident that the entire work would have to be re-written in order to introduce in the appropriate places the new genealogical matter and the personal sketches and biographies that had come to hand. As I was on the point of beginning this task, a severe illness placed all work of the kind out of my power. The work therefore had to be completed by Professor Sharples. He is busily engaged in his professional duties, but for the past two years he has given all the time that he could to the work, spending on it an average of five hours a day, arranging the material already procured, writing many new biographical sketches, investigating doubtful points, and making a type-written copy for the printer.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FAMILY.

In so long a study of a family, one cannot fail to observe those salient characteristics, mental and physical, which appear in successive generations. The same looks and physical build often present themselves in different branches very far removed in kinship. They often possess the same pronounced and peculiar qualities of mind. Many of the stock have been noted for their powerful and retentive memories. A public speech heard, a sermon listened to, the proceedings of a convention attended, would so powerfully impress themselves upon their minds that, years after, the words of the speaker would be recalled, the text of the preacher given, the substance of the discourse presented, the names of the leading men who had attended the convention mentioned, and the proceedings rehearsed. as a family it has not been distinguished for men who were leaders in thought. Not many ofits members have been noted in the great political world or in professional or literary work but they have figured more largely in the common walks of life. They have been looked upon in the communities where they have lived as reliable men and women, and, commencing with Richard and his sons, they have frequently been placed in positions of trust in the town and church government in the places where they resided. In business circles, they have been exceptionally strong. They have loved the activities and excitements of commercial life and have very generally been successful as business men. They have been money-getters and money-keepers, and while until recent times not many of them have been rich, they have generally been in comfortable circumstances. Now, manyof the name are wealthy. Richard Kemball (1) was a wheelwright in England, as many Kemboulds before him had been, and in every generation of his descendants, we find numbers following the same occupation.

Even at the present time, some members of the family are largely interested in the business.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS.

We have been greatly helped in the publication of the book by a large subscription for copies made by the late William S. Kimball of Rochester, N.Y. To Hon. John Kimball of Concord, N. H., Col. Robert J. Kimball of New York and Randolph, Vt., W. W. Kimball of Chicago,Ill., Capt. F. M.. Kimball of Topeka, Kansas, and to Roy T. Kimball, Esq., of San Francisco, Cal., we are under obligations for a liberal patronage for copies, and for historicalmatter furnished us. To Major General John Shaw Kemball of Fairseat, Wrotham, Seven Oaks, Kent, England, andhis brother, Charles G. Kemball, of Cranley Gardens, South Kensington, London, England, and the late Lewis Kimball of Nashua, N. H., and many others, our thanks are due for interesting and valuable information. To George H. Kimball of Cleveland, Ohio, Harry P. Hammond of Concord N. H., and especially to Miss Sarah Louise Kimball of Oakland, California, and to Thomas D. Kimball of St. Louis, we wish to return our thanks for aid and assistance in preparing this history. We are particularly grateful to Perley Derby and Alfred Poor, of Salem, Mass., for the use of their valuable manuscripts, placed at our disposal. And to all who have in any way helped us in any manner in this unremunerative task, our thanks are rendered. Without; their aid, the undertaking would have been almost impossible. To those who have furnished engravings of themselves and others, we, with those of the present and future generations, will be grateful.

This "History of the Kimball Family" greatly exceeds in size and amount of research the work we expected to prepare when we commenced it. The task is now finished, and we offer the work, as a memorial, to the members of the family, who may therein find how their ancestors have assisted in building up this country. To historians, it will be interesting as showing the wanderings of the descendants of the early settlers of Massachusetts Bay, and it may serve to assist local recorders in determining the origin of a portion of their population.

LEONARD ALLISON MORRISON. Windham, N. H., January 1, 1897

SUPPLEMENTARY INTRODUCTION

My friend Morrison wishes me to say a few words in relation to my part of the present work. Brought up among the Friends of Southern Pennsylvania, one of the earliest maxims instilled into my mind was never to be idle, never to waste time that could be usefully employed. Some years ago, I was appointed by the Governor of Massachusetts, Assayer of Liquors for the Commonwealth. This office involved much waiting around the courts. Isoon found that there was a rich mine of genealogical matter hidden away in the old records at Salem, Mass. in thecourts. A casual remark dropped at a Thanksgiving dinner by some one of my father-in-law's family, "that they knew nothing of their ancestors, except that they thought that they came from some-where in New Hampshire or Massachusetts," gave me some-thing to work upon. I began by trying, with aid of the documents on file at Salem and some town histories, to see if I could find out anything in regard to the New England ancestors of my children. After a year's work at such odd times as would have been otherwise wasted, I was able to say that I could trace every one of their ancestors back to 1720, and most of them back to 1630. In doing this I had accumulated considerable material. Perley Derby of Salem, Mass., seeing that I was interested in the matter, placed in my handsa lot of material that he had collected with regard to the Kimball family, with the remark that I might have it. It was an almost hope-less task to straighten it out. He had already used part of it in the preparation of a memorial of James Kimball. I found on examination of this mass of material, that I had the foundation for some work, and as an exercise in genealogical work, I tried to see what I could do with it. Shortly after this, Alfred Poor of Salem, Mass., placed at my disposal a number of notes he had made in regard to the Kimballs of Bradford, Haverhill, and Groveland, Mass., and also some relating to the Kimballs of southern New Hampshire. These I found of great value. They were made between 1850 and 1860. Mr. Poor made several genealogical trips and interviewed every person whom he thought could give him any information. The material thus collected is still in a great measure undigested. It is a mine of wealth to those who wish to explore the families of the region mentioned. I have visited personally every probate office in eastern Massachusetts; I have either visited or caused to be visited every probateoffice in New Hampshire, and have had abstracts of all the wills found therein made, so that I could trace as far as possible the movements of the family. I have also visited all the town records in Essex county, with one or two exceptions, and in these cases I have had the records examined. All this has involved several thousand letters and nearly ten years of work. Kimballs have been written to in all parts of the country, but I am sorry to say that I cannot commend the family as good letter-writers. It is not their habit to write a letter today that can be put off tillto-morrow. Still there have been notable exceptions to this, and I have bad many pleasant letters from members of the family in the course of the work. I have done my best to have the genealogical matter of this work correct, but I am conscious that there are still many errors in it. In some cases, we are still in the dark. While I think every one who looks into the matter will be convinced that the Kimballs of York county, Me., are descendants of Richard Kimball of Ipswich, so far I have been unable to prove this, but the traditions are that they came from Ipswich, andthe given names are the same. While at times the task has been a weary one, on the whole it has been pleasant, andI return my thanks to many members of the family who have assisted me. I wish also to acknowledge my indebtedness to the many town histories which I have consulted and to the published genealogies that have been used in the work.

EARLY MIGRATIONS OF THE KIMBALLS.

The descendants of Henry Kemball remained in Watertown and Waltham, Mass., and that vicinity, until after 1800; since that time some of them have settled in New Hampshire.

The principal settlements of the descendants of Richard Kimball have been as follows: Henry (2) remained for some time after his marriage in Watertown, Mass. He then removed to Ipswich, but finally settled in Wenham, Mass. He had three sons who left descendants. Henry (3) went to Haverhill, Mass. He left no descendants of the name. John (8) went first to Newbury, Mass., and then to Amesbury. His descendants are numerous; they went to New Hampshire and Maine. In late years, some of them have re-turned to the vicinity of Boston, Mass. Joseph (3) went to Preston, Conn.; his descendants lived there for two or three generations, and then some of them went to Plainfield, N. H. Rich-aid Kimball (2) early settled in Wenham, and his descendants are still to be found in that town. One branch of this family went to Exeter, N.H., and another to Dover, N. H. One of his grandchildren, Ebenezer, went to Hopkinton, Mass. His descendants are very widely scattered ; many of them are to be found in New York state and further west. Some still reside in Massachusetts.

John Kimball (3) went to Ipswich, Mass., with his father. His descendants are still in that town. One of his grandsons went to Norwich, Conn., and another to Stonington, County. They both left large families, and many of the Connecticut Kimballs are descended from them. Another descendant went to Buxton, Still others went to Rhode Island, and most of the Rhode Island KimbalIs belong to this branch.

Thomas Kimball early settled in the part of Bradford now known as Groveland. His descendants have been numerous in that part of the town. One branch of this family emigrated to the vicinity of Fitchburg, Mass. Anotherwent to Fryeburg, and still another to Bridgton. The descendants of Thomas Kimball have been prominent in public affairs. Benjamin Kimball (2) went to Bradford to live near his wife's father; his family was thrifty and multiplied exceedingly, and occupied the land, until at one time it was said that every one in Bradford was named Kimball except one man, and his name was Kimball Farrar. Benjamin's descendants followed the Merrimack river northward, and they are the most numerous of the Kimballs in the Merrimack valley. Of later years, many of them have gone West.

Caleb Kimball (2) settled in Ipswich, and his descendants have been numerous in that part of Essex county. One ofhis grandsons went to Newbury, Mass. his descendants settled in Sanbonton, N. H.

Research Notes:Four Ashes House, Walsham Le Willows, SuffolkThere has been a house on this site since at least 1326 when William Kembald, chaplain was accused of wasting and damaging the tenement Kembalds. Other early tenants included John Frances, Robert Pepper, Richard Page, William Potenger, chaplain and William Page who lived at the Rosary (38). He was a yeoman, whose will in 1543included money ' to carry out of my gravel pit three score loads of gravel to lay in the fowle wayes where they think best'' The present house was probably built by Thomas Page, his son, also a yeoman at the end of the 16th century and it stayed in the Page family for another century. By 1817 it was part of three cottages owned by William Day, a carpenter and beer retailer and occupied by John Banks and others.
