Topics covered this semesterFemale Reproductive System 1: Bony pelvis, organs of female reproductive system
Female Reproductive system 2: Pelvic walls, pelvic floor and Perineum
Introduction to gastrointestinal and respiratory systems
Male reproductive system: organs of male reproductive system, pelvic floor and perineum
Bones and joints of the upper limbOrganisation of the lymphatic system
Muscles of the forearm and hand
Breast, Axilla, Muscles of the arm,
Vertebral columnRevision of the upper limb
1. The function of the organ
2. Location/anatomical relations
3. Gross structure
4. Microscopic structure
5. Neurovascular supply
What should I consider when
studying the anatomy of an organ?
Using the uterus as an example…..
1. Function
Provides site for development of embryo and foetus
2. Location/ Anatomical relations
Located in lesser pelvis (non-pregnant)
Which structures lie next to the uterus?• Anteriorly & posteriorly• Laterally• Superiorly & inferiorly
3. Gross anatomy
(Moore & Dalley, 2006)
Consider• Size & shape• Parts• Position• Ligaments
Fundus
Body
Cervix
Internal os
External os
Uterine cavity
Round ligament
Broad ligament
Anteverted & anteflexed
4. Microscopic anatomy
Uterine cavity
Perimetrium
Endometrium
Myometrium
Walls of the uterus
- Endometrium
- Myometrium
- Perimetrium
5. Neurovascular supply
• Which arteries supply the uterus & where do they arise?
• Which veins drain the uterus and what vessel do they drain into?
• Which lymph nodes does lymph from the uterus drain into?
• Which nerves innervate the uterus?
1. Name of the bone
2. Where in the skeleton is it located?
3. Is it from the right or left side of the body?
4. Name and purpose of bony landmarks
What do I need to know about bones?
AcromionCoracoid process
Glenoid fossaSubscapular
fossaRight scapula
Angle
1. Which limb compartment is it in?
2. Attachment sites – originand insertion
3. Action
4. Innervation
What do I need to know about muscles?
Coracoid process
Radial tuberosity
Supraglenoid tubercle
Histology Studies
• Two histology modules this semester– Female reproductive system– Male reproductive system
• Find on Onemed learn• Series of videos, questions and
directions for self viewing of digitalised slides
• Drop-in sessions to answer questions– Thursday 14th October 5pm– Thursday 11th November 5pm
Anatomy study
• Be realistic in your expectations of yourself• Don’t expect to know everything after the first read
• Be organised - develop an anatomy routine
• Study everyday for a fixed period of time
• Cover each topic a number of times using different methods – see weekly plan
• Think logically, look for patterns, consider terminology, relevance
• Look up words that you don’t understand
• Adhere to weekly anatomy plan
