About AnandaAnanda is Sanskrit for “joy.”

We’re one of the largest and oldest meditation centers in northern California. Thousands in the Bay Area have learned meditation from Ananda over the past 40 years. Our approach is spiritual, and not limited to any one faith.

Ananda is one of the largest centers in the world for the teachings of Paramhansa Yoga-nanda, author of the spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi.

Ananda was founded by a close, direct disciple of Yogananda, Swami Kriyananda, who devoted more than 60 years to sharing his guru’s teachings with the public.

Ananda’s spiritual roots are India’s ancient science of Raja Yoga, a comprehensive way of life and philosophy that offers techniques and devotional prac-tices for spiritual awakening.

We offer a weekly Sunday ser-vice and a full calendar of classes and special events nearly every day of the week. Explore www.AnandaPaloAlto.org to learn more.

The purpose of life“If we are God’s children, and He loves us, why does He allow us to suffer?”

To this frequently asked question, Yogananda once replied: “Suffering is a reminder that this world is not our home. If it were perfect for us, how many people would seek a better one? Even with things as imperfect as they are, see how few people seek God! Out of a thousand, said Krishna, perhaps one.”

“The law of life is this: The less one lives in harmony with the truth within, the more he suffers; but the more he lives in harmony with that truth, the more he experiences unending happiness. Nothing then can touch him, even though his body waste away with disease and people ridicule and persecute him. Through all the vagaries of life, he remains ever blissfully centered in the indwelling Self.”

“These few years of your earth life are just so many seconds compared to the eons before you were born, and to the endless reaches of time still to come, long after you leave this world. Why be identified with this brief material interlude? These are not your body, your family, your country. You are only a visitor here. Your homeland is Infinity. Your true life-span is eternity.”

“The purpose of human life is to find God. That is the only reason for our existence. Job, friends, material interests — these things in themselves mean nothing. They can never provide you with true happiness, for the simple reason that none of them, in itself, is complete. Only God encompasses everything.”
