hroughout November, PBS programming celebrates human and naturalhistory with programs on Broadway and film legends, ancient architectur-al wonders and dinosaurs, super cats and snow bears. Thanks to yoursupport, Vegas PBS programming can link national programs with localhistory, including personal engagement opportunities and educational

experiences for viewers, educators and students. November is Native AmericanHeritage Month and our programs will also explore the rich history and culture ofNative people and recognize their continuing contributions to Nevada.

Made in cooperative with Native American communities and recorded in spectacu-lar locations, Native America airs Tuesday nights throughout the month. The four-partseries draws on science, archeology and history to showcase the ancient and still thriv-ing cultures that spread across North, Central and South America. The IndependentLens film Dawnland tells the story of the nation’s first-ever government-endorsed truthand reconciliation commission, which investigated the devastating impact of Maine’schild welfare practices on Native American communities.

In A Point in Time, a local Nevada filmmaker follows archaeologists working inNevada and Utah as they discover artifacts that reveal surprising details about someof the first inhabitants in our neighborhood. Viewers can continue the exploration ofNevada’s Native heritage with Outdoor Nevada: Common Ground as John Burke andthe crew are joined by tribe members from four Native American Nations in the stateand explore the land through their eyes.

Last month, Nevada Week, aired a special episode with a panel of educators andlocal Paiute tribe members who see inclusion of local Native American education as acomponent of our state’s tourism prosperity, historic identity, and essential to preservea culture at-risk of extinction. You can watch the full episode at VegasPBS.org or onour YouTube channel.

Our ever-curious viewers like to go beyond the airwaves and experience history upclose and personal. This month we offer members a three-day trip to Wapatki pueblovillages, the Painted Desert, and Montezuma’s Castle, stopping in Flagstaff andWinslow Arizona along the way. For details on this and other program-related memberexcursions, visit VegasPBS.org/tickets.

Vegas PBS also provides a robust collection of curriculum for Nevada educators andstudents that examines Native American art, history, and culture as told through histo-rians, artists, students, and scientists. More than 17 online databases provide access tothousands of classroom-ready, standards-aligned curriculum resources includingvideos, interactives, audio clips, photos, lesson plans, and more. Teachers can use thesefree resources to jump start classroom conversations and help students delve moredeeply into the history of Native American culture and innovation.

Your membership support helps fund television and internet program content thatprovides a window to the world – past, present, and future. We hope you take pride inthe richness of this month’s programming, travel excursions and classroom resourcesmade possible by your annual support. Vegas PBS thanks you for your gifts and usestelevision to broaden perspectives, deepen understanding, inspire engagement, stimu-late informed conversations, and provide lifelong learning about history, culture, poli-tics performing arts, health, science, nature, and ancient cultures.

as Vegas is a major American city, as almost anyone who lives in or has ever visited

our community recognizes. Sure, we could use a few more enhancements here and

there, but in recent years, we’ve filled many of the gaps.

Still, the case is often made that we must do more to improve local medical care.

And one of the organizations now doing exactly that – in a big way – is the Cleveland Clinic Lou

Ruvo Center for Brain Health. Its research and treatment in brain-related diseases has attract-

ed international attention.

Many locals have, of course, seen that unusual building downtown, but it’s also likely that

many don’t know exactly what’s going on there. It’s significant enough that we decided to pro-

duce a documentary about it.

Power of Love, our one-hour story of how

Larry Ruvo’s love for his father Lou result-

ed in Southern Nevada’s rapid emergence as

a world-class center of brain research, will

air Monday, November 5 at 10 p.m., with a

repeat broadcast on Thursday, November 8

at 3:30 p.m. This documentary is but a

beginning; our close work on this project

resulted in a collaboration to help fund more

programming of this type.

A screening fundraiser on November 1 at

the Clinic reflects this new Vegas PBS part-

nership with the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo

Center for Brain Health. Funds generated at the event and with the broadcast go solely toward

our production of more local health care programming, with a focus on the research and

progress on brain disease.

It’s the right area to focus on. If you’ve watched any of our past programs on Alzheimer’s

Disease, you’re aware it is a national crisis, a growing “tsunami” that threatens to devastate our

nation’s health care system, ruining lives of both the afflicted and their caregivers.

We’ll be giving continued attention to the important work being done right here in Las Vegas,

as the Clinic expands into research on diseases like Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis. If you

support this effort, there are a couple things you can do.

You can let me know of your desire to help fund more of this important programming. But if

you can’t do that, you can simply tune in to one of our broadcasts of Power of Love in November.

It will change your perspective on Las Vegas, now a major American city when it comes to health

care.

Secrets of the Dead: Teotihuacán’s Lost KingsTuesday, October 30 at 8 p.m.Two thousand years ago,Teotihuacán was one of the largest cities in the

world, a thriving metropolis not far from what is today Mexico City. But

just a few hundred years later, it was completely abandoned, its former

citizens long gone, leaving little trace of their culture. Despite many

decades of research, not much is known about the long-lost Teotihuacán

society.Who built this magnificent city with its giant pyramids? Why did

its people seemingly vanish without a trace? This special follows a team

of international scientists who believe they have found the answers to

these questions and more in newly discovered chambers beneath

Teotihuacán, the first Mega City in the Americas.

formational events. This season, travel across the country and around the

world, searching for clues in marriage records and war and immigration doc-

uments, and combing archives to reunite those separated by time and dis-

tance. Featured are stories of a Cuban-American who escaped during the

1980 Mariel Boatlift and never forgot the brave skipper who piloted him to

a new life in the U.S., along with two Vietnam veterans, one longing to recon-

nect with the helicopter pilot who rescued him from enemy fire, the other

wanting to thank the doctor who saved his leg.

Hamilton’s AmericaFriday, November 16 at 10 p.m.This exciting documentary film brings history to vivid life through the

lens of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s pop culture Broadway phenomenon

Hamilton — winner of 11 Tony Awards® and the Pulitzer Prize. The

special delves even deeper into the creation of the show, revealing

Miranda’s process of absorbing and then adapting Hamilton’s epic story

into groundbreaking musical theater. The film shows just how timeless

the hot-button issues of today’s America are: immigration, states’

rights, debt, income inequality and race relations. These were the same

fights that defined Hamilton’s time, and they are the driving force of

Miranda’s historic work.

Nature: Raising the Dinosaur GiantTuesday, November 27 at 9 p.m.Have scientists discovered the biggest animal to have ever walked the plan-

et? Deep in a South American desert, a giant is being awakened after 101 mil-

lion years of sleep. Paleontologists have discovered a giant femur – the

largest dinosaur bone that has ever been unearthed. Another 200 bones from

the same species have also been discovered. Sir David Attenborough will

guide us through the remarkable journey of waking the giant as it happens –

connecting the dots, translating the paleo jargon and explaining the revela-

tions using living examples, other dinosaur discoveries and CGI visuals. As a

finale, he will unveil the completed giant.

Princes of the PalaceMonday, November 26 at 10 p.m.From 95-year-old family patriarch Prince Philip to his

great-grandson Prince George, this special chronicles

the lives of three generations of British royal princes,

revealing the numerous ways the princes have served

Queen Elizabeth II over the course of her historic 64 year reign. Featuring

archival film and newsreels as well as exclusive interviews with royal biogra-

phers, commentators and a variety of other experts, this insightful film also

shares how each generation is groomed for royal duty and how the eventual

reign of young Prince George will define the future of the British monarchy.

Contributors include royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter; photographer Ian

Pelham Turner; biographers Tim Heald, Robert Johnson and Hugo Vickers;

writer/broadcasters Gyles Brandreth and Penny Junior; and royal correspon-

dents Nicholas Owen, Camilla Tominey, Ingred Seward and Romilly Weeks.

The Fourth Man Tuesdays at 6 p.m. beginning November 27

This three-part mini-series begins with the worst terror attack in modern

Swedish history. In 1975, terrorists stormed the West German Embassy and

took 13 officials hostage. One of the terrorists accidentally set off explosives,

killing himself and severely injuring the survivors. Cut to the present, and Lars

Martin Johansson (Rolf Lassgård) has just been promoted as the new head of

the Swedish Security Service. Following an intelligence tip, he reopens the

investigation.Three of four Swedish collaborators in the seige have been iden-

tified. But why is the identity of the fourth man still such a closely-held secret,

and what makes this information so vital to the highest levels of national secu-

rity? In Swedish with English subtitles. Repeats same days at 9 p.m.

The Pilgrims: American Experience Saturday, November 17 at 9 p.m. This fascinating two-hour documentary endeavors to tell the true story of the Pilgrims, a smallgroup of religious radicals whose determination to establish a separatist religious communityplanted the seeds for America’s founding. Arguably one of the most fateful and resonant eventsof the last half millennium, the Pilgrims journey west across the Atlantic in the early 17th cen-tury is a seminal, if often misunderstood, episode of American and world history. The filmexplores the forces, circumstances, personalities and events that converged to exile the Englishgroup in Holland and eventually propel their crossing to the New World. This is a story univer-sally familiar in broad outline but almost entirely unfamiliar to a general audience in its richand compelling historical actuality.

Why We SupportVegas PBS...

The mission of the Las Vegas Philharmonic isto perform music that enriches and educates, helping to build a vibrant, culturally rich com-munity. Central to our mission is our annualYouth Concert Series (YCS). Through the 18years of YCS, more than 200,000 schoolchild-ren in Clark County (the majority of whom arefrom Title 1 / At-Risk schools) have benefitedfrom these free concerts and the correspon-ding music education curriculum.

We support Vegas PBS because they recog-nize the importance of providing children witheducational programming that encourageslearning through unique and creative ways, including music and the arts.

Our goal is to inspire students in our commu-nity to become supporters of classical musicin order to sustain this art form for genera-tions to come.
