STRATEGIES FOR ANALYZING CAMPAIGNS
1) Separating facts from opinions
OPINION OR FACT?
Ms. Mitchem loves pink.
Ms. Mitchem is awesome.
That civics test was really hard.
We took the civics test on Friday of last week.
A new Rihanna song came out last week, and it’s so great, it should be played all of the time on the radio.
STRATEGIES FOR ANALYZING CAMPAIGNS
2) Detecting Bias
BIAS
Perspective #1: Taylor Swift got a call from her boyfriend, Joe Jonas, while she was on tour. During that phone call, Joe broke up with her. Taylor is super mad that Joe broke up with her ON THE PHONE!!
BIAS Perspective #2: Joe Jonas has been
thinking about breaking up with Taylor Swift for a few weeks. She’s a little needy. After a long day in the recording studio, Joe decides he is going to call Taylor and end it. She’s going to be on tour for the next 6 months, and he wants to move on. He doesn’t understand why Taylor gets upset with the phone-call thing. Would e-mail or text have been better?
BIAS
What biases do Taylor and Joe have?
STRATEGIES FOR ANALYZING CAMPAIGNS
3) Evaluating sources
EVALUATING SOURCES
Where would you go to find a report on the popularity of the President of the United States? A statement from a Democratic Senator A NY Times newspaper survey
Where would you go to get info about the Democratic candidate for President? The Republican Party website A neutral website
