1.0 INTRODUCTIONAcuren was contracted to perform a chemical analysis on client specified structural steel

members of the Granville Street Bridge to determine weldability. Testing was per

formed so that temporary supports can be welded for the purpose of upgrading/replacing

the bearings. Testing on site was performed using a Metorex ArcMet 8000 portable

    optical emission spectrometer (OES).

2.0 INSPECTIONAll testing was performed on the west side of the bridge at piers M2-M8. The locations

for testing were provided by the City of Vancouver. For the most part, all the testing was

performed on the outer steel plates. In certain cases some steel plates were tested on the

inner side, which are identified in the chemical analysis reports (Appendix A).

3.0 RESULTSThe results are summarized in the chemical analysis reports in Appendix A. Reference

material for the project included CSA S6-06 (Canadian Highway Bridge Design), CSA

W59-03 (Construction Specification for Structural Steel), CSA G40.21-04 (Structural

Quality Steel), and The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding.

CSA G40.21-04 (R2009) is the generally accepted specification for structural steel and

provides grades of steels in terms of weldability and strength. The designation "W" is

used for weldability, which is classified as steel that meets certain chemical requirements

and therefore is readily weldable (under "normal" conditions). Any steel not meeting

these requirements can still be welded with specific welding procedure. A number

preceding the "W" represents the strength of the material and was not determined during

    this inspection.

For the purposes of this report, only the chemical composition results for each tested

plate was compared to a CSA G40.21-04(R2009) grade steel. No mechanical testing was

performed and therefore the strength of was not confirmed.

Carbon equivalency (CE) is a tool used to determine the weldability and a generally

accepted criteria for carbon steel is:

CE < 0.45: Preheat and interpass temperature is optional 0.45 CE 0.60: Preheat and interpass temperature 200 - 400 F

    CE > 0.60: Preheat and interpass temperature 400 - 700 F

The equation to calculate CE according to CSA G40.21-04 is:

    Equation 1

4.0 DISCUSSION OF RESULTS Most of the steel plates tested have a CE < 0.45 and therefore there is no preheat

    and interpass temperature requirements.

Any steel found to have a CE over 0.45 a preheat and interpass temperaturerequirement should be determined by a welding engineer.

CITY OF VANCOUVERAnalysis on Granville Street Bridge to Determine Weldability Page 3

    A12605-08057_01-01R0 60CIT004004 CA-Granville St.Bridge.doc

Although some of the steels dont meet the specific chemical requirements ofCSA G40.21-04, their CE are still lower than 0.45 and should be weldable.

The chemical analysis results showed no pattern of repeatable results between allthe plates. In certain cases, the stiffeners, base plates, gusset plates, etc. some

were weldable and some were not.

5.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONSThe majority of the steel plates were classified as weldable, according to CSA G40.21-

04(R2009). The plates that were not may still be welded with a proper specific welding

procedure. Due to the variance of the results it is difficult to say that the results would be

the same on the east side of the bridge.

It is recommended that further testing be performed on all steel that is to be welded to

confirm its weldability and a proper welding procedure constructed by a certified welding

engineer is followed. Hardness testing may also be considered to evaluate the strength of

the steel on the bridge. Acuren can provide both services.

Please contact the undersigned if you have any questions about the above matters.
