Q) For demographic purposes, what·s your approximate age?
The research was primarily concentrated to the age group of 18-24. This age group
consists 41% of the entire sample. This was because the questionnaires were primarily
distributed amongst the friends and peer group. The sample tried to cover all the age
groups.

Out of the 70 female respondents 87% of them feels the society favors the male gender,
whereas 4% feels it is true to some extent. However 9% of the females feels that·s not the

For this particular question the respondents were given the liberty to select 3 options to
which maximum respondents felt that the Market Places require high level of
surveillance. Railway Station and local trains also topped the list.

While walking in the dark the majority of the females in our country feel somewhat
worried i.e. (43%). This clearly shows that there is a fear among the females in city
which makes them respond in such a manner.

Majority of the respondents feel that the laws made by the government are not enough
to protect them. 70% of the respondents share this feeling. 49 out of the 70 respondents
share the feeling of anguish and despair. Rest of the 30% i.e.21 of the respondents feels
that the laws made by the government are stringent enough to protect them.

The 63% of the respondents feel that the privileges gives by the law to the female sex
are not being misused by them in any manner. Whereas they feel that those privileges
are not enough and more of them should be given to them by the law.
On the other hand the remaining 37% feel that the privileges are abused by them in
some manner or the other and feel that the female section of the society should be more
responsible in future when it comes to these laws.

Due to the increase in the number of working females the number of females using
public transport daily after 10 pm in Mumbai has tremendously increased over the
years. Out of the 70 respondents 27 females use public transport after 10 pm. That
comprises 39% of the sample. Which clearly show that the number of females using
public transport at nights has increased.
24% of the respondents use public transport at least once in a week. 15% of the sample
use public transport after 10 pm at least once in a month. 10% of the sample use it less
than a month, whereas the remaining 12% don·t use public transport after 10 pm at all.

23% of the respondents always carry something with themselves. This clearly shows
that they do not feel safe while travelling in the city and they carry something to defend
themselves or alert others. Out of the total sample only 23% of the respondents feel
totally safe and do not carry anything along with them to defend or to alert others.

74% of the respondents try to avoid walking past teenagers and young men as they fear
them and they have a feeling of insecurity. This clearly shows that majority of the
offenders are from these age group. 21% of the respondents are more cynical about this
age group. Only 5% of the respondents do not perceive them as a threat to them.

Q) Has a male stranger ever forced you or attempted to force you into any sexual
activity by threatening you, holding you down or hurting you in some way?

A drastic number of 40 respondents i.e. 57% have been threatened sexually or otherwise
by strange men. They have been forced to go through the trauma. This shows very
poorly on our society and clearly shows that women in our city are still very vulnerable.

Though the number of female abused is very high the number of incidents reported to
the police is very low. Only 10 out of the 40 cases were reported with the police this
clearly shows lack of faith in the police and the fear of social embarrassment in the
victims. 10 are 14% of the total sample i.e.70.

An overwhelming 81% of the respondents know the number to report any crime against
them. This is because of the increase in the literacy levels among the females in our city.
This shows that the awareness levels amongst women in Mumbai is very high which is
very encouraging and also shows that the various awareness campaigns undertaken by
the government is effective and reaching the target audience.
