Frost & Sullivan: Plant Health Improvement
Agents Enable Growers to Do More with Less
Research PREVIEW for the
Analysis of the North American Plant Health
Improvement Agents (PHIA) Market (NDB8-39)
Key Findings
• The North American plant health improvement agents (PHIA) market was worth $15.45 billion in 2013.
Synthetic fertilizers dominated with 91.4% of market revenue, followed by micronutrients with $883.8 million
and plant growth regulators (PGRs) with $439 million.
• Nitrogen-based nutrients constituted the majority of the fertilizer segment, followed by phosphates.
Chelates and blends generated a large revenue percentage of micronutrients, followed by trace minerals
such as zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn) and magnesium (Mg).
• Efficient soil nutrition management and plant nutrition uptake are major market drivers. These result from
the need to maximize yield per acre and produce more with less resources.
• These factors lead to higher demand for smart fertilizers, micronutrients, and PGRs, which reduces the
market share of traditional nitrogen-phosphate-potassium (NPK) segment.
• Controlled release fertilizers, NPK blends, and chelated and blended micronutrients are expected to be the
fastest growing segments during the next decade.
• More educated farmers and a larger number of co-ops are placing value on suppliers that undertake
vigorous research and development (R&D) in addition to downstream testing.
• These developments are expected to positively impact the PGR and lesser known micronutrient (Cobalt
(Co), Molybdenum (Mo), Nickel (Ni)) segments. These products generate high value and growth potential
within horticulture and arboriculture applications.

2 Top companies impact market movement with advantages in technology, marketing, distribution, and end-user networking.
3 Fluctuating commodity prices and limited resources generate greater demand for “smart” nutrients, micronutrients, and PGRs.
4 Educated plant growers with a need for effective nutrient technologies are influencing product development and marketing.
5 Economic growth and dietary trends create new opportunities within agriculture, horticulture, and turf and ornamental (T&O).
1 The PGR segment is ripe for new market activity due to a low-share concentration, high growth and niche opportunities.
