Key Terms in Assessing Key Terms in Assessing PerformancePerformance
• Observation: watching sporting performances.
• Analysis: deciding what has happened.
• Evaluation: the end product of observation & analysis, where decisions are
made & feedback is given to the performer.
• Qualitative analysis: largely subjective (personal interpretation),
therefore subject to bias/error. More knowledge = more valid observation.
• Quantitative analysis: Direct measurement of a
performance/technique (Scientific).

Methods of Methods of Assessment Assessment
• Video Analysis: Video Analysis: – Objective record of performance.– Playback – slow motion.– Shows skill execution, tactical efficiency, general
performance evaluation.

Coaching FeedbackCoaching Feedback• Clarity of information/Appropriate language:
– Simple & understandable.• Type of feedback:
– Written List.– Verbal.– Demonstration.
• Positive/negative feedback:– Strengths/weaknesses.
• Evidence based feedback:– Base things on fact from analysis.
• Confidentiality: – Discuss weak points privately.– Feedback general – precise.

Coaching Coaching Diaries/LogbooksDiaries/Logbooks
• Log training sessions.• Planning/evaluating.• Guidelines:Guidelines:
1. Complete diary soon after coaching session.2. Write down what happened in order.3. Focus on what went well first.4. Describe what needs improvement.5. Action plan to develop what needs to be improved.
• Benefit: shows progress over a period of time.
Pg 286
CommunicationCommunication• Most important skill.• Verbal & non-verbal (body language).• Too much talking = confusion.• Pace, tone, volume influence communication.• Too much shouting = loss of respect from players.• Must be able to listen to players’ opinions & interpret
signs/signals from other players/officials.
Revision QuestionsRevision Questions1. What are the 4 essential skills every coach needs to have? 42. Define:
a. Observation. 1b. Analysis.
1c. Evaluation. 4d. Qualitative analysis. 3e. Quantitative analysis. 3
3. Differentiate between the two methods of performance assessment. 64. List the 4 steps to improving technique. 45. What does the word ‘SMART’ stand for? 56. Write a short paragraph describing the correct way for a coach to give feedback.
