Question 1 : Are you Male or Female?

Male Female

Through research it has been established that the main audience of the indie rock genre were in fact male. As a female I need to have insight into the males mind in order to be successful when creating my indie rock magazine. The reason why I decided to include a few females in my questionnaire was because I would find it useful to compare the different mind sets of males and females which I feel will make it easier for me to make decisions based on the males perspective.

80% of the people that took part in my questionnaire were males and the other 20% were females. The reason as to why I had more males take part in my questionnaire than females is because I want to create an Indie rock music magazine.

20 As expected 100% of my target audience listen to Indie rock. However they also have interest in other genres of music which include 65% Rock, 60% Metal and 50% other.

These results made me think that I should feature other artists however the majority featured will be predominantly attached to the indie rock genre. I believe that the addition of other artists would increase the individuality of my magazine when it is compared to others. This will essentially give rise to my target audience growing and also an increase in readership as my music magazine won’t just feature the same old artists it will be an innovative feature.

£1-£2 £2.50-£3 £3.50-4 £4+0

12 30% of the target audience said that they would be willing to pay £1-£2, 50% said that they would pay £2.50-£3 and 20% said that they would be prepared to pay £3.50-£4. As you can see no one was willing to pay over £4 as they thought it was way too expensive!

I went for the majority of the results to price my magazine between £2.50-£3 at £2.80. I decided to price my magazine at this price because it would appeal to my target audience, initially I was going to price it at £2.78 but changed my mind as people would have to fiddle with change to get the exact amount or be given 5p as change from purchasing the magazine as no one likes to have spare pennies I decided against it. I have made my magazine cheep enough so others will buy it instead of rival music magazines that are more expensively priced at £3 +.

Question 4: Who is your favourite musical artist or band? Please provide explanations as to why.

No two people asked had the same favourite music artist/ band. This shows how wide the indie rock genre is and how different artists musical interpretations are admired. The artists/bands ranged from Bon Iver (who is characteristically soothing and described as the music of angels) to The Arctic Monkeys (who are more rebellious in their approach to sound) and what surprised me was the fact that several probably 60% of the answers were indie rock duos that I’ve never heard of before. I didn’t expect many duos to be in the indie rock genre but I was mistaken. Through research I have seen over 400 duos in the indie rock music genre, this has surprised me as I wouldn’t associate duos with indie rock. This is a perfect example of how diverse this genre is and how it essentially goes against the norms and conventions. I decided that my magazine front cover will feature a duo, as this is not often seen and will make my music magazine stand out from the rest. I’ve also decided to include some of the bands/ artists mentioned in my skyline and sell-lines.

Question 5: Would you expect to see gig reviews and interviews in a music magazine?

YesNoMaybe

As you can see 1005 of the people asked said yes to the question “would you expect to see gig reviews and interviews in a music magazine?” This gives me a clear indication in what I need to include in my music magazine.

I will make sure to include words such as “exclusive” in my sell lines to increase reliability of the content as well as showing that there will be plenty articles written about artists as well as a few interviews and gig reviews

Question 6: Would you be more inclined to buy a music magazine that offers a free poster or music download?

Yes No

100% of the target audience ticked no. This shows that they are more focused on the actual content and about the artists success than they are about a flimsy poster or free music download that isn’t free because they had to purchase the magazine.

Taking this into account I will still offer the opportunity to download a free song, I feel as if this is important to open up the target audiences mind to different artists that they have never heard before. I also haven’t seen this offer in any other music magazine and thought it would be a good idea to try it out. I’m giving the readership the opportunity to discover new beautiful raw music of underground artists.

Question 7: On a scale of 1-10 (1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest) how important is the front cover of a music magazine, in influencing whether you buy it or not?

123456789

40% of the target audience choose 1. 5% chose 9 and also an additional 5% chose 3. 30% chose 4 and the final 15% chose 4.

This could be due to the fact that they felt that the appearance of the front cover isn’t of great importance when compared to the actual content of the magazine, that it is more significant. I believe it is a mixture of the two so I will make my front cover visually interesting and dynamic in order to draw the audiences attention to the content that will be expressed in the sell lines.

The majority of my target audience chose 1 as their answer. Making the front covers appearance as the least important factor that would contribute to their decision to buy that particular music magazine.

Question 8+ 9 : If you had the chance to win tickets to a festival, which would you like the most? (Tick a maximum of 2) why did you choose those festivals over the others?

• The two most popular festivals chosen were Reading/ Leeds festival and Glastonbury. This is important to know as it will help me decide which artists to feature in my music magazine and to include in my band index. Reading/ Leeds festival and Glastonbury feature more rough and down to earth indie rock artists, the atmosphere is often relaxed.
