ECO AUDITING CONCEPT
Environmental Management system (EMS)
• Refers to the management of anorganization's environmental programs in acomprehensive, systematic, planned anddocumented manner.
• It includes the organizational structure, planning andresources for developing, implementing andmaintaining policy for environmental protection.
• The goals of EMS are to increase compliance andreduce waste and pollution load on environment
Indian Textile Industry present scenario• Some of textile industries are implementing EMS, but
some are not implementing it
• Heavy effluent discharge
• Variation in input water quality
• No full proof, unique, easy and low cost technology is available for ETP in industry.
• Non Eco friendly dyes and chemicals usage in mfg.
• Adverse impact on Environmental aspects
• High treatment cost for ETP
• Environmental awareness ???
• Attitude towards natural resource
Challenges to comply ECO management system
• Cost of man power for management
• Cost of ETP ( installation +operational)
• Huge amount of sludge generation in ETP and its disposal system?
• Variation in ETP input effluent( process complexity varies )
• Maintenance system for RO/ZLD
Need of Eco AuditTo understand present status /reality
1. Adoption and implementation of EMS
2. Variability in quality of input effluent
3. Variability in processes in ETP
4. Quality( with respect to ecofriendliness) of dyes and chemicals)
5. Chemical Management and RSL
To provide ground reality data to MPCB ( millnames are not important here) for updatingpresent level of benchmarking, environmentalpolicies and further development opportunities
OBJECTIVE
To conduct Eco-Audit in different Textile companies tounderstand current status of awareness regardingenvironmental protection in textile Industries.
Focus will be given to understand chemical ManagementSystem in textile mills and create awareness about harmfuleffects on human being and aquatic life due to RestrictedSubstances .
Encourage textile mills to adopt environmental policy, conductenvironmental review, introduce environmental Programme, carry out internal audit, set the objectives aimed at thecontinuous improvement of environmental performance, prepare an environmental statement
Areas of environmental auditing
Areas of environmental auditing normally
include:
Water management and economy/control of use
Material management, quality ,savings and
alternatives;
Energy conservation management and savings;
Waste generation, management/control and
disposal;
Noise reduction, evaluation and control (internal and
external)
FUNCTIONS OF ECO AUDIT
The functions of environmental audits are
To improve an organizations compliance with environmental
legislation and regulations such as air emission standards,
effluent standards, waste management standards and
standard operating procedures.
To prevent damage and the tendency for environmental
damage
To improve resource use through reduction in material use to
minimize wastes and to identify recycling opportunities.
BENEFITS OF ECO AUDIT
The benefits of ECO auditing are
Identification of environmental risks
Use as a basis for the development of environmental
management policies or efforts to improve existing plans
Prevention of financial losses through the shutting down of
an organization or activity
Identifications of possible cost saving from energy
conservation and waste reduction, reuse and recycling
BENEFITS OF ECO AUDIT
The benefits of eco auditing are
Prerequisite of an environmental audit report for use by an
organization or activity in dealing with environmental groups,
government and the mass media
Provision of information required by insurance companies,
financial institutions and shareholders
To perform Eco Audit….
BTRA is preferable agency as it is
oldest, trusted and Renowned textile Research institute
having qualified and shop floor experienced scientist who knows better practical aspects on shop floor
NEED STRONG POSITIVE SUPPORT FROM MPCB
BTRA working for environmental protection
• Working on Plasma processing Technology –water less clean technology
• Effluent treatment with reduced chemical dosage and more water cleaning efficiency by radiation technology
• Evaluation and improvement program through plant audit- suggestions for water and energy conservation on all the activities on shop floor.
Thank You
