TYPE OF DOCUMENTARY- The programme was a Mixed documentary which included interviews with his friends and colleges, observation, narration, archive footage of him performing and had actuality footage.

Interviews

The themes of the programme were family, friendship, change in the music industry and the determination to succeed when everything might not be going the way you want it to go. It was done in more of a biographical way.

Open- this is where all the question at the beginning was answered and we weren’t left wondering anything from Kenny Rodgers career or life.

Single strand- the only topic of the programme was Kenny Rodgers and his career and how its had its ups and his downs in his career.

Non linear- it didn’t follow chronological order because the programme kept going between archive footage and interviews and observation throughout the programme.

Circular- it started and finished between the same footage of Kenny Rodgers and his group playing in the room.

GraphicsThe names of the people that were being interviews were all in capital letters and the sublines were in upper/lower case which anchored the person to the topic and this made it more relevant. It ranged from left or right of the screen depending on where the person was sat on the screen. It was all in a white serif font.

In the interviews of the programme they were either a medium close up or close up with a shallow depth of field and were sat either to the left or right of the frame. They followed the rule of 3 where the eyes of the interviewee was inline with you eye line. A tripod was used to film this because it kept it steady. Other camera shots used were zooms (in and out) pans, tilts, car shots, low angle, big clos ups of records, turn tables. They also use camera shots from the floor, pull focus, actuality footage. A lot of this programme was filmed on hand held cameras because they could quickly move between different shots.

MISE-EN-SCENEIn the interviews they used pianos, juke box, mixing deck etc to help anchor the person to the topic. In the rest of the programme there was footage of where he grew up, roulette wheels, and other things that are relevant to the topic.

They used actual footage of him singing to help people understand what music he does and how it sounds. They also used gospel music and all the music linked together because it was all relevant to the topic which was being discussed. The female voice over used standard English and kept calm and was reading it clear so that she could describe the narrative that is happening.

Editing The main edit that was used was a cut between the interviews and

other things but they also used montages to give more information, red and yellow flashes, dissolves in the montage, fades and they used cutaways to edit out the questions to make it look good and so that we wouldn’t notice them changing them cutting the questions away and so that it doesn’t jump

There was a lot of archive material used in the show and these included album cases, his past performances with people including duets, still images of his life, old magazines, ray chiles, the Vietnam war, Glastonbury, tv shows, national 1 came and many more were used in the show
