Analysis Clip 3 and Clip 4

MISE-EN-SCENE – CLIP 3

LIGHTING – CLIP 3

• Lighting is very important from the very first scene with the light from the candles on the orange birthday in the dark it seems very tense and sinister, little lighting creates depth to the scene with the shadow and it foreshadows what is next to come.

• The lighting gradually increases when she is running away from the shadows making the lighting more bright and clear which represents the fact that she is out of the nightmare and running away from the past. The cake sequence is significant because it is building towards the birthday wish.

LOCATION – CLIP 3

• The primary location for clip 3 is the hospital, this is where Sarah is in the hospital bed and in the next scene she is running down the corridor. The fist scene with the cake is very important as it foreshadows what is yet to come as this place is non existent. The final location in the corridor is significant as two major characters are united together in the final scene.

PROPS – CLIP 3

• There are a number of props used in clip 3, the birthday cake is very significant to the tone and the presence of danger.

• The heart beat monitor is very significant because Sarah is in a hospital.

COSTUME – CLIP 3

• The costumes are very significant when it comes to the relevance of the scene and the atmosphere of the hospital with the rest of the staff who are in the corridor. Sarah is dressed to look like a patient and it quickly changes through to the last scene, her costume reflects her mood.

SOUND IN CLIP 3

• Sound is very significant in the clip as it creates suspense and it adds to the atmosphere as the situation across each of the scenes it gradually flows in time from the very begging with the birthday cake to where Sarah is running in the corridor.

• Diegetic • This is at the start with the blowing out of the candles on the birthday

cake on screen within the frame. When Sarah is in the corridor shouting for Jess and that initial conversation in the frame. The diegetic sound of the medical machines when Sarah wakes up in the hospital bed.

• Non diegetic • The sound effects are very important in Clip 3 especially in the corridor

the music brings about tension and sudden sense of all is lost for Sarah and the audience feel this from the outset. The screaming is also non diegetic as it has been added afterwards this fives the impression of all is lost and the sense of death, the sound also foreshadows what is next to come.

MISE EN SCENE – CLIP 4

LIGHTING - CLIP 4

• Lighting is very significant in this clip due to the4 fact that they are in a cave and they have torches, there is very little light due to the environment and lighting is significant when they are facing the crawlers the light I shining at them together with the water in the cave, where light is shining down onto it.

LOCATION – CLIP 4

• The main location in Clip 4 is the cave and this is where the main characters are walking through, after they are seen in the crawler scene. The cave is full of darkness and shadows this adds to the horror genre of the film and what it is conveying together with the symbolism of death and the screaming of the victims.

COSTUME – CLIP 4

• The costumes are basically exploring equipment for example a torch they are dressed appropriate for a cave expedition. • The crawlers also have a CGI costume in there

scene.

PROBS – CLIP 4

• The probs that are used in clip 4 are the torch lights and hard hats that the use to explore the caves. Theses probs are used to convey the message that it is very dark and its dangerous so they have to be aware of everything around them. There is also a camera which is used in the scene, they use the infra red feature to see what is around them. A rock is also used which is lying on the floor which has been used as a weapon. The film props are used to insure that the audience understand what is going to

happen and they bring about this sense of foreshadow into death.

SOUND IN THE FILM

• Sound in Clip 4 has an integral part to play in terms of conveying a message in this case its to introduce the Crawlers into the picture and sound helps to manipulate the fear and get the audience more interested in a particular scene. The sound in Clip 4 also creates more emotion and is a vital element of story telling.

• Sound is introduced in the beginning with the sound of the trickling water inside the cave this adds to the depth of realism and makes us image that environment even further. The sound of the reactions (screaming) to a particular event is also important as this leads us on to the most important part in terms of sound which is the Crawler jumping down and that long high pitched scream.

• Diegetic • This is the conversation between the main characters at the beginning

when they are exploring the cave and looking for a way out.

• Non Diegetic • This is the sound of the Crawler which has been added on after the scene

together with this the sound that has been created and inserted into the movie after it has been shot in the cave, the Crawler has been added.
