townships

What if the people of the city and the properties of the different townships got a bit more “mixed”?

Malmo is always presented through a division of townships. Each are so different from eachother that they easily can be labeled.

outskirts

In the outskirts people live more than twopersons together. Her you can find the bigfamilies, the villas and the gardens

The average age is older than in the centre

Here is less unemployment, and the averageincome is higher here than in the centre. The people in this area is in general more established and the change of peopleliving here does not happen as fast as in the centre.

malmö

centre

I find the city centreand a the outskirt zonealmost like an contradiction,or maybe an natural continuance of eachother. There are a few contrasts, but the continuance of eachother might be proved with the fact that, in the area of education there is just as much higher educated people in the centre than in a part of the outher sone. This part got an average higher income than the rest of the city, and theaverage inhabitant is older thanthe rest of the city. Here is also a lot more villas and big space. So this might be the place where highly educated move when they establish as older, with bigger families or with a bigger bank account....?Another way this can be seen, is that most people move away from the areas with highestamount of rentables, and there is an increasing number of inhabitants in the area where peopleat most own their houses.

.

In this area (the city centre)of Malmo we find an significant amount of people living alone, in highrise apartments.

The average age is quit low, and this tells that there is a lot students living here. Beside students there is also an increasing amount of first time establishers inkl.young families and older people (which number of, is decreasing).

The income here is general lower than in the outskirts of the city.

Here you can find the biggest cultural mixin the city, the diversity of different nations represented are enormous.

A lot of people are moving to and from this area. These days there is actually more people moving from, than moving to in a certain area of the city.

The unemployment is bigger here and on the overlap to the outher zone than in the rest of the city.

- some areas distinguish

This area is special because of its industrialhistory, and as a strongsymbol of malmos identity. The yard is gone, so is thekockum kran (the manifest-ation of malmos identity). The identityis in trouble. This area is in the prossess of renew itself, and the result is yet to see.Can this area again function Malmos pride and become a credible symbolof the city and its inhabitants? The situation is now that thisarea is first of all a settlementfor wealthy inhabitants, with an average income, double of the city average. At the same time it is focused asan education area and a park area.

Rosengaard is an areathat have som bad connotations connectedto its name. It is caracterisedas a troublesome area withsocial problems. This is the township where most peoplemove out and a lot fewer in.The income and higher educationis on its lowest. 60 % of theihabitants are multicultural, whichis very high in contrary to the other townships.Rosengaard is sometimes caracterised as a parallell society.

Vastra Hamnen(area in township)

Rosengaard(township)

Hyllie (township and a gateway)

Inn addition to a township, I also look at Hyllie as a gateway. This area, and the area are streching out towards the bridge on the westside, south and south east. Folkeveksten is big and happen fast, bigger developing projects are planned and the citytunnel will have a big station here. The sporvogn tram will probably also have two lines through this area. The density of housing will increasefast. The marked area got a high amount of multiculturalinhabitants, but the area streched out west, got the lowest number of nations and multicultural represented.

- A focus of three zones

.

I’m going to work in the area

“in between” and on the entrances to the different sones, to try to open up these zones and connect the areas and the people within it.

open up the areasinwards and outwards

These three zones got their own individual challenges in present and in future. The contrast between the areas are big, butthey share the same potential and expect-ations to the future.I think the Identity of Malmö is dependent on how these areas are going to develope socially.
