2025 - 2016
The global construction market forecast to grow by over 70% by 2025Economists have estimated that during this time construction will transition into a
digital economy with a forecast £200 billion p.a. global market for integrated city systems by 2030.
Shifting towards an Industry 4.0 Model
Drivers for BIM:
and mice!
Pull:
• Mandates for level 2• ITT Requirements• Operational data requirements
Push:
• Innovation and work winning• Need for better efficiency• Better productivity• Competitive advantage (added value)• De-risking delivery and operations • It’s expected of us

STANDARDS HELP CONSISTENCY AND ADOPTION
BS 8536-1
• Recently updated standard, now part of BSI BIM Level 2 suite • Encapsulates the activities for (Government) Soft Landings• Needs input from AMS/FMs at project briefing stage – To inform the Employers Information Requirements –To learn lessons from prior operation or other assets
PAS 1192-3 • Information management exists within a framework of asset management & within organizational management • The whole asset life-cycle includes asset operation and project delivery and a linking process between them
ESPECIALLY ON THE OPERATIONAL STAGES

“The digital asset is about the occupant and user outcomes, its about good quality information,
but its also about the long term asset management and maintenance”

need to be defined as part of the Employer’s Requirements. The EIR define which models need to be produced at each project stage – together with the required level of detail and definition. These models are key deliverables in the ‘data drops’ – contributing to effective decision making at key stages of the project.
The content of the EIR covers three areas: Technical, Management and Commercial
“Creating capacity in the market is asignificant barrier: three yearsago people were asking ‘what isBIM?’; the next year it was ‘howcan we do it?’; now it’s ‘we can’tgrow enough capacity to meetDemand.
Overcoming barriers to wider BIMadoption requires consistency, training, support for clients andsuppliers, clear guidance, patienceand a willingness to collaborate”
We need to grow both capability and capacity to sustain the transition
Task Group Education & Training Framework
“Poor client behaviour is anotherproblem, or rather inconsistentbehaviours in terms of procurement, with various parties failing to fullyunderstand the process. If it’sundermined we all fail. Projects have to be led by the client.
Ensuring departments are trained and capable to accomplish the task in hand is a key aspect”
New behaviours required (collaborative procurement)
Benefits Realised: • Encourage collaborative working including early
engagement of FM and Operation• Visualisation & Lifecycle solution testing &
preconstruction stage• Accurate and complete data improving quality of
bids, reducing risk allowances in target prices and lump sum bids
• 3D model input into the assessment of the impact changes at all stages in a project lifecycle
• Input of a populated asset data set into CAFM systems – saving time and avoid duplication
• Data bought only once and an appropriate LOD• Better and more collaborative outcomes• A digitally enabled AMS

Risk of not collaborating: Divergence
• Adding cost burden– Divergentes
• Slowing economic growth• Entraver la croissance
• Confusing the market• Confondre le marché
Vision• Foster a world-class, digital, open, competitive
European public works and construction sector
• Optimise the full life-cycle of public works
• Improve the efficiency, effectiveness and value for public money
