The analog connections above applies to digital as well.

Current digital technology allows connections to be in digital format i.edigital I/O.

This technology has created a short cut with the removal of patchbay as allconnection is done through digital and wired in the DAW itself.

Home studios are gaining popularity as digital equipment is cheaper. Eg.

High end preamps are available which replaces the function of mixerpreamps.

Some studios have even gone and choose the MIXERLESS option wherethe function of the mixer or console is removed.

Today these multitracking device are in the formof 24 track modular digital recorder.

More recently, the advent of technology hasallowed the use of solid state and hard disktechnology to store tracks and utilized in DAWrecording software.

The basic function of a multi-track recorder

The multi-track recorder records performances or video (post production ) as they stream out of the mixer orconsole.

On playback mode, these signals are re-routed backthrough the mixer through sends and returns from therack of processors and back to a another recorder orcomputer via soundcard or audio interface.

Patchbays The function of patchbays are to route traffic between the processor rack

    and the mixer.

It allows easy insertion of compressors, EFX units, harmonizers, EQs etc.

    to the mixer or console.

Conventional setup and wiring of the patchbay is asfollows:

Top part of patchbay is OUTPUT

Bottom part of patchbay is INPUT

In usual application, patchbays are divided into 2 types of wiring.

    a. Normal Full termination of contacts.

    b. Half Normal tConnection is linked internally to the bottom jack.

Inserting a patch cord into the input jack will split the signal off the jack butretains the internal link between two connections. Eg. Channel inserts.

It is also possible to connect and integrate MIDI/ Audio Sequencer and DAW into amulti-track rig, digitally speaking.

Again, with cost, most semi pro studios are able to undertake bigger projects the costof digital products are cheaper but has the ability to perform tasks as close to studioswith large setup.

All connections whether digital or analog or hybrid systems will use various clockprotocols.

Eg. MTC ( Midi Time Code), SMPTE or ADAT synchronization.

Digitally, time clocks are used to synchronize the multi track, digital mixer and DAWcan function in unison and operate on the same time base.
