AccommodationsHotel B Barranco ***** - Alcoba on days 1 & 2
Originally built in the style of the Belle Époque, the mansion served as a
seaside retreat during the presidency of Augusto Leguia in the 1920s. Its
architectural features and flair capture the celebratory spirit of Peru’s
centennial, which permeted life in the capital city throughout the era of its
construction. Famed French architect Claude Sahut, lauded for his work
remodeling portions of the Government Palace, along with many of Lima’s
main avenues, parks, theaters and other public buildings and spaces, was
originally commissioned to design the property as a summer retreat for the
Garcia Bedoya family. Construction was completed in 1914 and initially
showcased imported Italian marble and exotic woods, along with an ornate
façade, stratospherically high ceilings featuring teatinas (a unique style of
skylight favored locally), open balconies and expansive terraces. The Arts
Boutique Hotel B restoration and reconstruction team includes sculptors
from the Fine Arts Academy and a legion of carpenters under the
supervision of an Italian master woodworker. The goal of the project was to
preserve the original structure while introducing a complimentary three-story
annex to the property, ushering it into the modern era in its new role as a
boutique hotel. The INC (Peru’s Historic Building Society) considers the
renovation a new standard for historic restoration in Lima and beyond.

Hotel Sol y Luna ***** - Superior on days 5 & 6
Sol y Luna authentically reflects the rich Andean culture and allows us to
share the beauty of the Sacred Valley with our guests while generating the
income to support the Sol y Luna Intercultural School. My name is Marie
Hélene Miribel, but everybody calls me simply Petit. Following my heart, I left
a successful corporate life for the Sacred Valley of the Incas, to live my
dream of improving the future for some of the world’s poorest children. In my
husband Franz, I met the perfect match. I have tons of ideas for how to
educate these children, and Franz possesses the gifts to build and realize
these audacious dreams. In 1999, we started an education project for the
local children, many of whom walked for hours each day to get to a school in
poor condition or did not go at all. Working within the existing social fabric
proved invaluable to understanding the realities of schools and families
around the Sacred Valley. To support our education initiatives in the most
economically sustainable way given Sacred Valley’s potential for tourism, in
2000 we decided to build a hotel. Franz and I gradually understood that we
could be most effective by starting our own school. In 2009, we opened the
Sol y Luna Intercultural School, which our children Thomas and Melanie
attend today, along with 185 children of the Sacred Valley. In remote
highland villages, inhabitants trace their ancestry to Tahuantinsuyu, or the
Land of the Four Quarters, as the great Inca Empire was known in the 13th
to 16th centuries. Throughout this rich history, this naturally fertile valley has
remained the region’s breadbasket and continues to inspire the global
phenomenon that is contemporary Peruvian cuisine. An outdoor enthusiast’s
pristine playground, the Sacred Valley also ranks among the finest places in
South America for tandem paragliding, mountain biking and trekking. More
leisurely fresh air pursuits include kayaking, horseback riding and tours by
quad-bike. Living culture in the Sacred Valley revolves around the Andean
concept of Ayni, meaning ‘reciprocity’ in Quechua, which conveys the idea
that progress is a collective goal. Working together allowed the Incas to
develop an advanced civilization and highly evolved belief system. This
combination of the practical and the spiritual is still very much in evidence
throughout the Valle Sagrado. Extraordinary vistas in every direction, best
enjoyed on the private terrace of each of these circular houses, are matched
within by our favorite Peruvian folk art. Sunlight streams into our intimate yet
utterly comfortable circular casitas made of local stone, terra cotta and
adobe brick, surrounded by the entrancing Sacred Valley landscape so
revered by the Incas.

Hotel Inkaterra La Casona ***** - Patio on days 7, 8 & 10
The first boutique hotel in Cusco, Inkaterra La Casona is located in the
traditional Plaza de las Nazarenas, surrounded by vibrant, cobblestoned
streets. This 16th Century manor house stands on the training grounds for
an elite army of Incas, and had Spanish Conquistador Diego de Almagro
and ‘Libertador’ Simón Bolívar among its illustrious guests. After being
harmoniously restored by Inkaterra throughout five years, emphasizing its
original architecture, Inkaterra La Casona reflects the encounter of cultures
and traditions across centuries. Surrounding the main patio, its eleven suites
are provided with chimneys, heated floors and extra-large bathtubs. Its halls
are decorated with colonial furniture, Pre-Columbian textiles and original
murals. The Yacu therapy room offers bespoke treatments and, like the
manor’s dining room, uses products derived from local sources. Those who
sleep within the stone walls, beneath the exposed beams, gain a deeper
understanding to the city’s cultural heritage.
