    Industrial Scenario of Madurai

    The Temple City of Madurai was once a Leading

    Textile City

    The migration and Closure of Leading mills lead to

    loss of Jobs The loss of Salary Income alone is estimated around

    Rs.5 crores every month

    The efforts for bringing a Hosiery Industrial Estate

    could not succeed

    Light Engineering and Rubber Industries thrived on

    its own

    Rubber Industries started coming up in

    Madurai from early 20th Century

    Major Industries like SI Rubber and Fenner

    were the forerunners

    The success story of Bharath rubber and Hi-

    Tech Arai paved the way for concentration of

    rubber industries in Madurai Traditional Industries like rubber balls, tier

    retreading, Fan belts etc. thrived well

    India stands fourth after Malaysia,Indonesia and Thailand in natural rubberproduction.

    Rubber Plantation Area

    5.67 Lakh Hectares.

    Production of natural rubber

    9 Lakh M.Tonnes (approx)

    in traditional areas of Kerala andTamilnadu and non traditional areas ofNE States.

    1958 - Started Synthetic rubberproduction to offset growing NR demand.

    Rubber industry established in 1920sranging from erasers to truck tyres.

    EVOLUTION OF RUBBER INDUSTRY IN MADURAI

    Two small scale Industriesestablished in Madurai in the late1940s

    TVS and Fenner were the forerunners

    in large scale production of industrialrubber products.

    The success story of Hi-Tech Araistimulated the growth of more rubberindustries.

    Traditional Industries like rubber playballs, tire retreading, V belts etc.continued to thrive well.

    PRESENT STATUS OF RUBBERINDUSTRIES IN

    MADURAI

    At present the total volume of rubber

    business in Madurai is around Rs.1,000

    crores

    Export Turnover exceeds Rs.100 crores The Number of Units will be around 100

    and out of which 5 units are Major

    industries and 20 will be Medium

    Industries and rest small industries

    The employment generated by RubberIndustries will be around 7000.

    Indirect Employment will be 15000 plus.

    become the Rubber Hub of Southern India

    The number of Industries is expected to grow over 50% The turnover increase will be more than 100%

    Exports will increase by 200%

    Employment generation is also expected to increase by

    60%

    Due to Globalisation the Competition is

    becoming stiff and being a small unit and

    standing alone will pose major problems

    Coming under one roof will create moreopportunities and provide more strength to

    face the competition

    Collective bargaining and collectivemarketing will be an added advantage

    Common Infrastructures could be developed

    What we Expect from the District

    Administration?

    100 Acres of Land preferably at a nominal price

    Speedy clearance of all formalities like, Land Use

    Classification, Building Approvals, Running

    Licenses, Common Infrastructures like Roads,Drainage, Street Lighting and Transport facilities

    In case the District Administration is not able to

    provide Land, atleast extend a helping hand in

    buying private lands and help to reclassify the Landuse

    Provision of Water is also essential

    MADITSSIA is playing the Lead Role in

    coordinating all ITCOT is preparing the feasibility Report

    Conclusion

    We assure both the Governments to make Madurai

    District as an Industrial District and provide more

    employment opportunities which is the only solution

    to improve the Economy of Southern Districts

    We anticipate a Helping Hand from all Government

    Agencies involved in Cluster Development

    We expect the Member, Planning Commission will

    be supporting this noble cause.
