FÀILTE

As the dark nights begin to draw in and autumn descends, festival season stays with us here at An Lanntair as we launch a stunning programme for Faclan 2017: The Hebridean Book Festival. With subjects of landscape and palimpsest running through our exhibitions programme, Faclan takes things one step further this year with its festival theme of ‘Ultima Thule’; a place beyond the borders of the known world. And what a fabulous selection of writers we have – I can’t wait for explorer Doug Scott, with his book, ‘Up and About: The Hard Road to Everest’, and Michelle Paver with her terrific, chilling ghost stories.

There are a few surprising little gems in there too – I would definitely recommend you get along to Jessica Danz’s live piano accompaniment to Iceland, a rare film of Icelandic life in the early 20th Century. We will also be welcoming three incredible and highly acclaimed photographers to our main gallery this September with a new exhibition, Hyperborea: Lands of the North, including Ragner Axelsson, Alex Boyd and Chris Friel

- a not-to-be-missed show. And don’t forget to grab a coffee and sit down with this programme to check out all the fabulous acts performing in An Lanntair this season. I am particularly looking forward to WHYTE - a collaboration between electronic composer Ross Whyte and Gaelic singer/songwriter Alasdair Whyte - and their first ever show here at An Lanntair this November. See you all soonElly Fletcher, Chief Executive

Dùthchas is Dualchas: Instinct & Heritage - Shaun Fraser5 Aug– 12 Sept

The first solo exhibition from this Royal College of Art graduate is a powerful statement of intent. Primarily a glass artist, his work comments on notions of connection, identity and belonging, and references the raw, emotive, elemental landscape of his native Highlands and Islands. Peat and local soils were used in the glass castings but the show also includes screen prints, bronze casts of peats, Canadian moose antlers as well as stag antlers and sheep skulls in glass.

‘Hip hop, ya don’t stop’ – ach feumaidh gach nì math a thighinn gu ceann. Tha Without a Hitch a’ leantainn an droch chùrsa a bha aig sgioba de cheathrar bhalach a tha air am buaireadh le miann adhartais, farmad agus cas-bhacadh a tha a’ ciallachadh nach fhaigh iad air an aon cheann-uidhe a ruighinn. Le sgioba eadar-nàiseanta às An Fhionnlainn, An t-Suain agus An Rìoghachd Aonaichte gheibhear fìor chomadaidh dhorch, dannsa beothail agus riochdachadh sgiobalta bho thaisbeanadh thèatar dannsa hip hop ùr aig Room 2 Manoeuvre.

Faclan: Hebridean Book FestivalWed 25 - Sat 28 October Festival pass £65/£60or individually priced

In medieval geographies, Ultima Thule is a place beyond the borders of the known world. Nowadays, we tell ourselves that there are no such borders, that there is no ‘unknown’ world. Yet we remain possessed by it: the hinterland, the winter land, the empty space beyond the horizon that can only be filled by our imagination. For writers it’s an endless territory to explore, revisit and reinvent. Perhaps ultimately we still need these narratives; we still need somewhere that is off the map. Am measg na h-ùpraid a tha a’ dol chaill Pali òg grèim air làmh athar agus cha robh cùisean an aon nì dha tuilleadh. Chaidh e fo chùram teaghlach Muslamach, agus fhuair e ainm ùr, creideamh ùr agus beatha ùr. Ach an uair a thilleas athair ga iarraidh, feumaidh Pali inntinn a dhèanamh an àirde cò e; balach Hindach, balach Muslamach no fear a bhuineadh dhan dà thaobh. (Freagarrach do 8+)

The collaboration began as a commission by the organisation Ceòl ‘s Craic to bring together artists from the fields of electronic and traditional music for a live performance. Taking inspiration from Alasdair’s research interest in 17th- and 18th- century Gaelic song and poetry, the duo began working on new ambient electronic arrangements of several rarely-heard songs as well as original compositions. Their music has drawn comparisons with Sigur Rós and Martyn Bennett..
