Introduction
This course has been developed to help you improve your English for Academic Purposes (EAP). In order
to improve your EAP, it is crucial that you improve your general English as well. Therefore, we strongly
advise you to have a plan to attend general English courses available in the city and dedicate some serious
time for self-study.
The course aims at developing the following skills: reading academic texts, writing emails and CV,
writing an abstract, and giving an academic presentation. To achieve these goals you need to build up
your vocabulary and brush up your grammar and pronunciation. Therefore, we have introduced several
resources to help you learn the most important academic words. In addition, we have included several
grammar mini-lessons in this course book.
We recommend that you spend 6 to 8 hours per week to study the material in this course:
You should study and memorize 570 academic words on your own.
You should read the reading materials that your teacher asks you to learn before the class.
You should post your written assignments to Moodle.
You should prepare to give an academic presentation.
Grading will be based on:
Quizzes on the materials covered in previous sessions.
Mid-term exam
Final exam
Class presentation
Moodle assignments (moodle.iasbs.ac.ir)
Attendance policy:
The classes officially start on Mehr 1st, Dey 1st, and Farvardin 14th each term.
A session where students do not attend the class or only a few do still counts as an official session.

Introduction to Academic Presentations
Note to Students
Welcome to the Presentation Skills module! Giving a presentation in English is a real challenge, even for
those who have a good knowledge of the language.
In the following lessons, selected from the book entitled “English for Presentations”, you can learn the
essential vocabulary and expressions that anyone needs when giving a presentation. There are also several
useful tips that will help you to have a more effective presentation in English.
The seven units of this course cover all the stages of a presentation. Many useful tips are also given which
are followed by related exercises.
Remember that studying these lessons does not guarantee a successful presentation in English unless you
improve your level of General English.

1.1
You and presentation
Work with a partner. Ask the questions below and make a note of the answers. Then tell the group what you found out and discuss.
1) How often do you give presentations?
2) Who do you normally present to? (Classmates, faculty, etc.)
3) When was the last time you gave a presentation in English?
Was it a success? If yes, why? If no, why not? Explain your answer.
4) How do you feel about presenting in a foreign language?
5) Think of an excellent (or terrible) presentation that you have attended.
What made it good (or bad)?
1.2 An academic presentation
An academic presentation / talk consists of:
1. an opening
2. the actual academic presentation
1. In the opening, you introduce yourself and set the scene to start your presentation. The opening can be
as short as a few seconds or as long as a few minutes depending on the time available to you and your
plan of action.
2. The actual academic presentation usually consists of:
a. an introduction,
b. the main point(s)
c. conclusion
Question: Which one of these three sections do you think is more important, introduction, main
point(s), or conclusion?
Starter
Figure 2
Chapter 1: Getting started
- You and presentation - An academic presentation - Opening a presentation
- How to develop an outline - An effective introduction
15
a. Introduction:
In the introduction, you set the scene for the main act.
The main act: the presentation of your theory, model, proof, experimental setup, calculations, computer
simulation, or your results, if you have any, and more importantly, your interpretation of your results.
Therefore, again depending on the time available to you, your introduction could be very short or as long
as necessary. It is all a matter of choice.
Question: Which do you prefer, a long introduction or a short one?
The introduction usually contains the necessary definitions and basic ideas. Here you set up a
framework in order to be able to present the main point(s) of your talk.
On the other hand, your introduction could include
the presentation of a theory or model
experimental setup, computer simulation
a number of theorems, or the method used, etc.
so that when the main point(s) is (are) presented, it (they) would be meaningful.
It all depends on your field of study, the focus of your presentation, and the time available to you.
b. Main point(s):
Emphasize the most important findings; include the descriptive and analytic results.
The main point(s) of your talk can be
your results and their interpretation (any subject),
a new model and its meaning and implications (any subject),
alterations to an older model,
a theorem and its meaning and applications (any subject, especially mathematics),
proof of a theorem (any subject, especially mathematics),
computer simulation of a phenomenon (any subject, usually not including mathematics),
results of an experiment (any subject, usually not including mathematics),
design and/or construction of a device (usually not mathematics or computer science),
introduction of a new algorithm (any subject, especially computer science),
etc.
You need to mention your interpretation of your results—the discussion of the results—as one of the most
important part of your presentation.
c. Conclusion:
Summarize and conclude. You can also provide recommendations (directions for future studies) if you
have.
16
According to Anholt (2010)1 the conclusion of a scientific presentation should
always be firm and decisive;
provide the take-home message, often the only thing that will be remembered;
determine the final impression and impact that you will make on your audience;
always be reduced to a concise statement, preferably shown as text or a simple diagram on a slide;
consist of a single major statement, with not more than two or three connotations.
1.3 Opening a presentation
It is a good idea to take the following steps at the beginning of your presentation, again depending on the
time available to you.
