what is a video blog?

• a video blog is a blog that includes video• the video has similar qualities to text in a blog

• informal, quotidian, personal, mixed voices, grounded in the life world of the blogger, indexical

• which makes it much like documentary• they are social

some history

• some early video blogs appeared in late 2000 and early 2001

• 2004 was declared ‘year of the videoblog’• an email list established, with original membership of 8

• currently 2000+ and video blogging is now common

• create a blog• shoot, capture, edit and post video• then join the argument about

• file format, data rate, size, frame rate, length

• RSS aggregators

• RSS aggregators and then an iPod, television, iTunes, etc

what works and what we know

• as it is a video blog video consists of minor (small) stories

• meaning and depth accrues through time as it is a serial/episodic form

• all content must be porous to the network
