included in ‘Ditto in a Box’ with an overview on each component for your initial orientation on the lower

primary and childcare centre education pack.

Ditto in a Box – How it works Ditto in a Box can work in four ways:

1. A program of study that complements Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure ‘live’ show either before or after a performance.

2. An education pack that provides a personal safety program specialising in the prevention of child sexual assault for lower primary and childcare centers.

3. Ditto in a Box provides a module for a safety program of study that requires objectives specific to the prevention of child sexual assault.

4. Ditto in a Box can supplement an established personal safety program by utilising the flashcards, posters, music and worksheets included in the pack.

Ditto has three rules which underpin the content in each module:

1. We all have the right to feel safe with people

2. It’s ok to say ‘no’ if you feel unsafe or unsure

3. Nothing is so yucky that you can’t tell someone about it

professional development tool including essential

support and contacts for educators.

We highly recommend the guide is referred to

before rolling out the program.

LISTEN Listen carefully to all that they say.

AFFIRM Tell the child that you believe them.

DON’T BLAME Let the child know that what has happened is not their fault.

ENCOURAGE Tell the child that they are not responsible for the assault and that you understand it must have been very hard for them to tell.

SAFETY Let the child know that you will do everything in your power to help them.

DOCUMENT Write everything down, using the child’s own words as best you can, include behaviours and any things they have said previously that may have hinted at the assault.

Module 4: Secrets

Ditto in a Box Storybooks

There are two storybooks used to illustrate safety guidelines based around privacy and private parts used in Module 3.

The stories can be used as part of a lesson or on their own to open

a guided discussion on this topic.

Each story presents a common scenario related to privacy

and private parts that follows with a series of comprehension

questions that help to recall key messages.

Ben and the Babysitter

Theme: Personal hygiene and privacy

Ben is growing up fast but is still young enough to need a babysitter.

When it comes to bath time, he decides that he’s ready to have some privacy when he gets undressed and when he has a bath.

Ben finds it very difficult to ask his babysitter for some privacy because he does not want to hurt her feelings, get into trouble or disobey her instructions.

However, once he asks for some privacy, it turns out that it’s not as bad as he had imagined. There is now an understanding that he is growing up and needs some privacy and can take care of himself in the bath.

Ben feels more confident and happy than before.

Becky and the Doctor

Theme: Feeling safe in a medical examination

Becky wakes up to find that she is covered in red spots and her mum decides they should visit the doctor. During Becky’s appointment, the doctor needs to examine Becky to help with a diagnosis. Becky feels nervous and unsure and turns to her mum for help. The doctor suggests that her mum sits close by to help her feel safe and says she is allowed to say ‘no’ when she feels unsafe or unsure. Becky’s mum reassures her and sees how much courage it took for Becky to say how she was feeling. Becky understands that the doctor needs to check her spots to help her get better and also understands that feeling safe is important. She is pleased that she told the grown ups that she felt unsure and learns that it is ok to say ‘no’ when she feels unsafe or unsure.

Ditto in a Box uses nine posters to reinforce key messages and

present context to a young audience.

The majority of posters have been designed as lesson support material only. Only Ditto’s Three Rules posters should be used as a consistent display.

Ditto in a Box - Scenario Cards

Ditto in a Box contains six scenario cards that

are used in Modules 3 and 6.

Each card contains an image depicting a scenario with a text description of the scenario on the opposite side. The cards provide opportunities to introduce, reinforce and assess the student’s knowledge on personal

safety strategies.

Once the cards have been used with guided adult discussion and safety strategies have been identified and explored, these flashcards can also be used for interactive and assessment opportunities relating to:

Ditto in a Box - Personal Space Cards

There are 20 personal space cards that help to present:

• Defining a personal space boundary

• Circumstances in which different people might be permitted into each personal space boundary

Ditto’s Safety Circles poster is used with the Personal Space Cards in an activity designed to explore the concept of safety boundaries.

Ditto in a Box CDs/Songs

There are two CDs that accompany and support each module:

The musical style has been adapted for younger children

in their early years (up to 4 years old) and for

lower primary children (5 to 8 years old)

Ditto in a Box CDs/Songs

Each CD contains five songs that support Ditto’s safety messages. Lyrics provided in the CD brochure present the content of each song Lyric sheets included in the teaching modules can be photocopied ‘How To Use The CDs As A Support Tool’ in the Teacher’s Guide

presents the learning objectives and recommended supportive discussion

Find the learning objectives included in each song in: How To Use The CDs As A Support Tool The last song ‘Run and Tell’ should be supported by ‘The Helper Plan’ that helps to identify a range of people to talk to when children feel unsafe and unsure or when they have a ‘no’ feeling.

Ditto in a Box - Activity Book

The Activity Book contains activities that work best with guided discussion and supplement the five teaching modules in Ditto in a Box.
