Our Vision
Five Years From Today:
• All Kentucky OB/GYN providers actively recommend Zero Alcohol to all pregnant or could-become-pregnant patients
• Over half of Kentucky citizens know that drinking during pregnancy can cause invisible brain changes that affect behavior, learning and memory
![Page 4: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Individual Strategies
Environmental Strategies
Typically involves policy and enforcement
Includes everyone in a community
Changing overall norms and attitudes
Difficult to sustain because there’s always more individuals to reach!
Convincing each person to change behavior
How does the balance of prevention fit with our vision?
![Page 5: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Environmental Strategies
Individual Strategies
In order for our vision to be realized and sustained, attitudes (and community
norms) must change.
Has the attitude toward car seats changed over the years?
Smoking?
![Page 6: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Our Guiding Principles
1. Community change must be FUN!
![Page 7: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Our Guiding Principles
2. Involvement leads to passion, not the other way
around.
![Page 8: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Can community change really be
fun?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qx_8gxh76iM
We think so…
![Page 9: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Can ANYONE
be an agent of
change in their
community?
1. A tiny, specific, fail-proof objective
2. A scripted path from Here to There
3. Tangible gratitude on behalf of The
Cause
We think so…
![Page 10: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)

Our Guiding Principles
1. Community change must be FUN!
2. Involvement leads to passion, not the other way
around.
![Page 37: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
![Page 38: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
No Excuses
• Staff of one, statewide project
• Small budget with no implementation dollars 1. www.onesourceprint.com
2. Develop a strategic plan so that all activities are pointing toward the same outcome
3. Read the book “Switch” by Chip and Dan Heath.
4. Involve people in your fun.
![Page 39: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Think BIG?NOPE
!Think small. One small thing at a
time, done well, is huge.
![Page 40: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
Lessons Learned:
“It is not given to us to know which acts, or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip
toward an enduring good. What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts – adding to, adding to, adding more, continuing.”--Clarissa Pinkola Estes,
2003
![Page 41: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
Those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
![Page 42: An Inch Wide and A Mile Deep: The Kentucky Experience (A Work in Progress…)](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103023/56649e0d5503460f94af6736/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
